orienteering race 1:15:07 [4] *** 6.4 km (11:44 / km)
spiked:12/17c

Excellent day and excellent run early, but then got tired and lost concentration. Several loose controls, especially #7 where I undid all the good that I had done until that point. In retrospect, I think I probably ran too hard early, as I was clearly struggling with my conditioning well before the halfway point. Towards the end, I was chagrined to see Charlie DeWeese punching the penultimate control right after me. At first I hoped that he had chosen to run Green (he didn't). Then I hoped to outrun him to the finish (I couldn't). Finally I tried to take him out at the knees when I stumbled crossing the finish line a half-stride behind. Fortunately, I missed, but I think I did provide an impressive spectacle for Peter Goodwin and the Walkers, and thankfully without any signficant injury. Congrats to Charlie on an excellent race and to Peter for setting a very enjoyable course.

As an aside, I have now travelled to and from Kent by three different routes, and I have yet to find any of them acceptable. It is undeniably a long haul from Boston for a local event, but it was good training for events later this Spring, and it also allowed me to take full advantage of one of the few Sundays when I was not scheduled to work overnight.
