Thanksgiving training camp. Day 3. Harriman State Park, west of Lake Tiorati. Ian, Jeremy and I did a line-O, followed by an exercise in the course of which each of us alternated leaving a control marker for another person to pick up and picking up a control marker left by another person. This was a great deal of fun, once we figured out how to do the exercise without getting confused.

Note

The Thanksgiving camp was an incredible amount of fun. I am grateful to Kseniya, her mother and Sergei for their hospitality. I am grateful to Boris and Ian for driving so far just to train with us. Finally, I am just generally grateful that I got to spend time with all the good friends and good food, in the beautiful outdoors and the cozy indoors. It was all truly wonderful and I hope we get to do this again soon.

Thanksgiving training camp. Day 2, exercise 1, designed by Sergei Zhyk. At Silas Condict Park in New Jersey. Six intervals of 4, 5, 5, 5, 6 and 6 controls, with about 100 meters of walking between the intervals. This time there were about eight of us. For some of the intervals, we did a mass start. For some of them, Boris split us into groups and staggered the groups about ten seconds apart. Each time we waited for each other at the last control and walked to the start of the next interval together. I felt very good moving through the forest and navigated on my own most of the time.

Thanksgiving training camp. Day 2, exercise 2. At Eagle Rock Park in New Jersey. After resting and eating at the house, Boris, Ian and I drove over to Eagle Rock to do an old green course that had been streamered by Sergei. We ran together. On any given leg, one person was leading, one person was checking the leader and the third person was planning the next leg. This worked out quite well, we were moving smoothly and fast.

Thanksgiving training camp. Day 1, exercise 1. In Harriman State Park, just north-west of the Kanawauke Circle. On a brilliant, chilly morning, drove up to Harriman. Many inches of snow everywhere in the woods. No one in the parking lot at first, except me and some guy with dogs. Then Boris showed up, then Kseniya and Greg Balter. Around 11 AM, the four of us headed out on our courses. We went in pairs: I with Kseniya and Boris with Greg. All four of us started together and shared many of the controls, so we saw Boris and Greg in the woods a lot, especially in the beginning. The snow was frequently up to our knees and waists, the climb was considerable, the vegetation underfoot plentiful and the footing challenging and rocky. Accordingly, we were moving fairly slowly. Most of my attention was occupied by the task of physically moving through the forest. Kseniya did most of the navigation for our pair, though I tried to help as much as I could. When we got back to the parking lot, we discovered Zan and Becky, who got there while we were doing our course.

Thanksgiving training camp. Day 1, exercise 2. In Harriman State Park, just south-west of the Kanawauke Circle parking lot. After resting, warming up and eating a bit, Boris, Kseniya and I headed out on a control picking exercise, which we decided to do in a backwards control order. A few controls into the exercise, we met up with Ian, who was setting the streamers in the forward order. Ian joined us, and the four of us finished the exercise, collecting all the streamers along the way. We then jogged back to the parking lot on a road.

Ran on 37th Avenue and 111th Street to Corona Park in Queens. Then ran around Meadow Lake in Corona and ran back home. Wasn't too tired, so was able to run softly and without too much pounding. My joints, lower back and head thank me by not being in pain.
