I was prowling the NAOC Blue Sprint on Winsplits (link, didn't see one on the NAOC site). Winsplits randomly unlocks two of eight spiffy bonus features to tease the Pro version (tempting, but not $75 tempting), and one of them is called Head-to-head. It shows how many splits you won/tied/lost to each individual runner. Thought that'd be cool to mangle into the AP split page. So here's that, for me, and one for my go-to guinea pig, ian. red boxes are splits the runner in question lost, yellows are ties, and greens are wins.

barb/ed's cambridge hills street-o. started and finished at cp3, nearest my house. only hiccup was when i tried to hit cp6 from the south and was met by accurate mapping. i assume street-o club only has two rules: getting hit by a car is a DQ, and run on the streets, eh? broke that rule a little on the way in to 6, but i was honest on the way out. only quirk to the route was having CP1 down the one-way-the-other-way major bus egress from the harvard square warrens. danger-fun!

and here's the same plot of running shenanigans for ian:

it worked! way less random than mind - looks like actual diligence pays off, eh? you can see a grey-to-orange gradient from upper right to lower left - meaning, as time goes on (about two and a half years, here), runs get faster and easier to do. so if there's a gradient of fitness going NE to SW, that means there are contours of constant fitness going NW to SE - the speed/HR tradeoff for a given level of traning. wonder what those look like.

there's a lot going on, to put it mildly. so much so, that just gray-to-orange wouldn't do - but rainbow would. red is mid-2004, up to the purpley present. so much chaos that this just might need to get animated.

the most noticeable thing is the clear separation between training in the upper left, and racing in the lower right. it's a bit tough to see through the layers, but it looks like ken had a super fast orange period, a dip in the green years and stready improvement through blue into purple. and that's just training time - superfast race performances come in all colors.

also crazy: over 10700km of running! in 57000 minutes - that's damn near 40 days! the mind boggles! go ken!

Climbing (Gym) 2:00:00 [3]

forced myself to the climbing gym after a lazy week - and had a respectable showing. hammered out a pile of V3's and even bagged a (questionable) V4-. i'll have to have words with this one last overhangy V3.

met ross's sister at metrorock - fortunately i had friends who knew her. orienteering was the tip, as they'd heard something about baggy pants and running into trees. ross had said 'look for the girl version of me', but with the beard and speed-hair, there was a bit extrapolating to do. great to meet her, and i learned a fun fact: our ross was almost given two middle names just to have the recursive intials R.O.S.S. rugged orienteering superstar? rodent of stupendous size?


more goofing with numbers. this time it's data in four dimensions. four!

the running history of ben:

-each circle is a run
-x is the average heart rate
-y is the pace in min/km (fast near the bottom)
-circle size is the run length
-circle color is how long ago the run is (gray is 5 months back)

i was hoping to see grey in the upper right and orange in the upper left - that would mean i was going on faster runs at lower heart rates as time went on. at least the orangey circles are getting bigger.
