Note

my brother's iphone game got mentioned in sports illustrated!

...
as a sign of the apocalypse

any press is good press, though, right?
12 PM

Running 1:06:05 intensity: (6 @0) + (3 @1) + (30 @2) + (6:10 @3) + (59:09 @4) + (7 @5) 12.98 km (5:06 / km) +365ft 4:53 / km
ahr:167 max:183

finally out from under things at work. took advantage of being well rested and went long. goal was 7 miles. well, the actual goal was whatever ended at fromaggio's saturday bbq). felt good towards the end and added an eighth. avg hr is way higher than i expected/felt

pretty sure i might've run 8 miles once or twice in high school, but this was certainly the only time since then.

satisfyingly dense trail network near the south end of whatever park that is on the east bank of the chaz. just sayin'.

Cycling 30:00 [3] 6.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

to work and halfway back. flatted the front on a nasty groove near havard yahd. took the bike for a walk the rest of the way. i hate walking in cleats. skritch. skritch. skrtich, etc.

Note

coping with eyeballing the business end of a second stupidly late night in the shop:
adventure race sleep deprivation training!

in that vein, i'm loving reading about the AR World Champs, thanks to the kickass reporting of Bash et al.

Running 31:29 intensity: (2 @2) + (10:54 @3) + (20:33 @4) 5.8 km (5:26 / km) +219ft 5:08 / km
ahr:160 max:170

only time for one lap with a little embellishment

one of two good things about boojum - it was cool (and novel) to still have legs under me 8k and hour-plus into the affair.

the second was having a 20 second lead coming out of CP3 (promptly squandered) combined with getting the finish split. just need to figure out the middle 15 controls.

Note

somebody tell me if i've got the AOWN thing down:

poison ivy-wrapped greenbriar. enough said.
12 PM

Orienteering 1:25:14 intensity: (4 @0) + (52 @1) + (10:12 @2) + (38:11 @3) + (35:03 @4) + (52 @5) 8.61 km (9:54 / km) +505ft 9:05 / km
ahr:155 max:192 spiked:14/19c

green at boojum. felt more like going to war. it's thick out there. just saw the results on the NEOC page and dread their arrival on AP. but i still also want to see them.

minor incidents on 4, 5, 15. major incidents on 7 and 9. sacrificed leg 11 (which i forgot to hit lap at) to science - wanted to see how bailing to the roadin and hammerin' compared to actual orienteering. now we just wait for the splits. QR-forensics for 7 and 9 to follow, as advertised

4.6k straightline. hahaha.

1) hesitation at wrong junction, and misread the contours and thought the control was on the near side of the ridge. learned how thick the white was. (0:20)
2) could see the bag from the trail, shoulda just trailed it. burst onto a trail in front of some hikers, they asked if i was lost while i ran by, said 'no, i'm an orienteer' (0:30)
3) without incident (equlibirium, anyone?)
4) roadie. coulda been a good split but i turned in too early. serious fight. (2:00)
5) seriouser fight. hands-and-knees a few times. hit the trail without realizing i'd drifted north. (incorrectly) checked off the trail junction, but then it took an unsanctioned turn south. corrected, punched. (3:30)
6) suspected an unmapped bonus trail off the rock knob, and it was there. more road, flag, punch.
7) woof. good initial route, missed the trail and perfectly paralleled it for awhile, caught a trail, wasn't sure, relocated at the major junction, reattacked. (8:00)
8) easy
9) not without incident. overshot, confused by bonus trails and similar cliffs. relocated off the wrong hilltop. should've gauged distance off the main north-south trail better. (8:00)
10) almost good. on a good heading, inexplicably veered right near the bag. i need to replace my lost moscow, these rental compasses blow. (1:00)
11) pissed at the woods. hauled ass to and up the road. curious to see how this stacks up.
12) easy, little hesitant
13) easy. finding pit controls without overrunning a few times is so satisfying. ditto for not finding the pit the hard way, with gravity.
14) started out good, crappy pacecount, a little wandery. (0:30)
15) easy
16) fooled by bonus trails with similar rock features at the end. further off the trail than i expected (2:30)
17) maybe should've gone straight - but i had learned that lesson four times already. goddamn river of poison ivy in that 'marsh'.
18) end run around the PI (2:00)
19) exit, stage southeast.

28:20 of errors. yay.
