Ansonia, green, 3.9 nominal. First race since last fall and no training over the winter.
Nice cold and clear weather in woods where veg was barely beginning to bud and visibility was excellent. Did not try to run (trot/jog) very often, being cautious. My goal was to concentrate on map contact and compass use. I largely succeeded at that, although on 4 I lost focus after going up the shoulder of the ridge, descended west when I should have contoured north, then, overcautious, dipped south a few paces to confirm the cliff was not the one sought. My recovery to the north was steady but with doubts on how far to go. The only other way-off was on 10 where I was too far south upon ascending the ridge and got befuddled. Another slow, doubting exploration to the north finally paid off. The rest of the controls I found fairly surely, though I overshot 9 maybe 20m before spotting the bag over my left shoulder.
My route.
