Orienteering race 2:25:20 [3] 11.71 km (12:25 / km)

Down to Huntington SP for the Foot O at a Bike O event. Suzie thankfully: had warned us of the RT 58 detour to get there; warned that the map was 1:15,000 despite its legend; and pointed out that the controls were all on trails.

The position of the Start and Finish suggested going clockwise around the park but I've climbed up the hill from the east before and knew that would be a loser at the end of the event. So I went down to the east and got a nice soft warm up. Since no scoring seemed to be in effect with a deadline other than closing the course at 2pm, I decided to take a sustainable pace at all points and see if I could capture all the controls. #115 looked like an outlier and I pegged that as a probable omit.

My route. Looks like I jogged almost half the course I chose. Easy enough to find the controls except when I left the trail to bushwhack: #103 was good, I'd climbed at the right place; #114 was my disaster (followed the creek, turned west on the trail, and apparently went right by the control without seeing it, spent 12 minutes going back and forth on parallel trails before I ran into it); #112 I apparently followed a southern branch of the creek up the hill and turned south at the trail instead of north, perhaps a 4 minute goof. Area around #116 was a mess of bike trails but finding the wall on the map let me go right to it. Drifted right on way to #108 but saw bikers at the control in what was a fairly open area. Passed Gail walking toward me west of #106. Sensed a blister and confirmed decision to punt #115 way up north. Headed back to finish, rewarding myself walking through lovely fields gently up the hill -- felt smug about that.

Broke my 25 year daily distance record on my last day at 69. And didn't feel bad at all at the end or driving home.
