And just like that... winter arrived. It must have been triggered by Hammer's comment. ;)

Naturally, this was the day we were packing up to go home after a week and a half in Kolapore with virtually no winter sports. AdventureDog and I went out for a Bruce Trail hike heading east. It wasn't a lot but there was more snow than forecast - beautiful.

My Ambit thinks I climbed 454 m. I didn't. Not even close. Hmm.

'Bent and I were feeling a little "meh" about a foggy, damp, almost snow-free, pandemic New Year's Day so we decided to hike a section of Bruce Trail that we've never done before (as far as we remember). We parked at the dead end of Fox Ridge Road west of Duncan in the northeast part of the Beaver Valley. With BazingaDog and AdventureDog, we headed south toward Old Baldy but turned off before we got there. Some early parts of the trail were more challenging than I'd expected with BazingaDog pulling on his leash - steep, glazed and rocky. But we survived and tired out the dogs, which is the important thing.

We had to loop back on gravel roads that were pure ice but luckily there wasn't much traffic. The Bruce Trail app didn't show whether my planned loop was possible so it was an adventure that could have involved much more road. Luckily, we could still see faded Bruce Trail markings along the trail that I'd hoped would exist and connect us to the part of the Bruce where we'd started. Fun to get out and explore a bit! We only met one other couple on the trail.

Run from the chalet to Duncan Escarpment Provincial Park parking lot and back - a route with a couple of good hills. I ran carefully on gravel, grass, ice (on the steepest sections) and slush. It wasn’t smooth but there was little risk of wrenching my foot on a hidden rock or frozen divot, so I figured I could go farther than I could on trail without inflaming my Achilles too much. I’m slow but I feel like I could start trying to build my endurance back up. It’s dreary weather for December but it’s supposed to snow tomorrow.

Dog hike to our neighbours' house to pick up a generous gift of homemade bread fresh from the oven. Mmm. :)

'Bent and I met Mr. and Mrs. Gally for a chatty hike up "6th", which is what the locals call 12th Sideroad. We veered south into Castle Glen and overlapped yesterday's hike for a short distance before scrambling up the slippery Bruce Trail to the sideroad. It was planned as a hike but we ran the steepest parts of the descent to the cars; it was easier than walking on the slick surface. Then we had a drop-off at the Doughtys and a drop-off at Dee's before heading back to the chalet for a quick turnaround.

'Bent, BazingaDog, AdventureDog and I went to Loree Forest for a hike with Andrea & Steve Good, their children Kingsley and Greyson, and their dogs, Maui and Tulip. On a holiday afternoon, Loree Forest is like a great big dog park. Hikers without dogs are in the minority and most owners seem hopeful that their friendly dogs will expend energy playing with others along the way. Our team of 4 dogs could look a little intimidating at first but the Goods' two Doodles weren't that fearsome up close with their cute top knots.

While we were hiking, we got the notification that the kids would be going back to school two days later, which will definitely protect them from Covid while giving them a little more time to ski.

Trekking (Trail) 35:00 [1] 2.89 km (12:06 / km) +114m 10:06 / km

Holiday outdoor reunion hike around Castle Glen in slippery conditions with kids and dogs. It was the Millers, Doughtys, Fords, Cameron/Muellers (visiting from France), 'Bent and me. Great to see everyone at a time when an indoor party wouldn't work. It finished with a rousing snowball fight. I wasn't even involved but I lost!

'Bent and I took on another Kolapore ski trail maintenance assignment: Southern Crossing west of 10th Line, Quiet Pastures and part of Northwest Passage, a long section that includes several kilometres of wetland. We had to wear knee-high rubber boots and thankfully, we avoided soakers in spite of breaking through the ice with great frequency.

We learned that 'Bent's little Sawzall can cut through softwood pretty well. We managed to clear things we wouldn't have dared to try before. We cleared a lot of smaller debris too.

A couple of blockages will need the greater skills of the chainsaw crew. Unfortunately, they're both a long way in.

And we'll just have to wait for this one to fall down - yikes.

Rather than retracing our steps through such slow terrain, we returned to our van via gravel roads with a trail shortcut. A dog, Gus, led us for the last 2 km. He seemed very friendly and got a little too close to approaching vehicles, who gave us dirty looks. When we got close to our van, we checked his collar and phoned his owner, who came to get him. If we hadn't found a phone number, he would have come home with us until we could find his owners. We couldn't let a nice dog wander around on an icy road in a remote area.

I wrote the vaccination clinic organizer in Thornbury a few days ago and it sounds like 'Bent and I might be able to help out up here this week.

Brisk catch-up hike with Jackie Tarno, Koko and BazingaDog while 'Bent and Tarno ran with AdventureDog. From the chalet to the ski trails and around the Kolapore Church/Paradise Highway loop. Normally we would stay off the ski trails in late December but our snow dances aren't working yet.
