Trekking (Trail) 30:57 [1] 3.05 km (10:08 / km) +71m 9:05 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro Grey

Hike around Palgrave West with AdventureDog.

Trekking (Trail) 31:42 [1] 3.12 km (10:11 / km) +46m 9:29 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro Grey

Similar hike with BazingaDog. If I'm alone, it's much more enjoyable to hike the pooches separately, unfortunately.

The theme of this weekend in Palgrave is "honeysuckle on the breeze". Such a nice smell.

A less pleasant theme was "LDD moth caterpillars on the breeze" - although most of them have grown too large to blow around anymore. I just pulled one out of my hair though. Ugh.

Note

‘Bent and I introduced ourselves to a family of Palgrave Forest visitors who had spread a blanket for a snack break in the middle of a patch of poison ivy. ‘Tis the season. If you know someone who needs to work on PI recognition skills, this photo quiz is useful.

I'm feeling some mild vaccine-related fatigue and muscle pain, I think, so 'Bent and I took an easy ride to Tottenham and back, mostly on the Caledon Trailway.

I suggested that we explore a side trail near Tottenham Conservation Area. 'Bent wasn't impressed with my shortcut trail back to the Trailway.

Report from the late shift at Caledon's vaccination clinic:

- We had 20% as many appointments as last Thursday because the province has gone back to distributing vaccines by population, rather than sending extra doses to Covid hot spots. What's strange is that people were coming to our clinic from outside Peel Region so the extra doses didn't all benefit our hot spot anyway.

- At a time when we're supposed to shop alone to avoid overcrowding stores, it's interesting to see how many people come to their vaccination appointment with a friend or family member who is not being vaccinated - just there for company, I guess.

- A small number of people have very strong opinions on Pfizer vs. Moderna and don't necessarily approve of the one being offered to them. (Some Pfizer had to be saved for ages 12-17 since Moderna isn't approved for them yet.) We're *so* lucky to have a buffet of effective vaccines just 15 months into the pandemic.

- At the end of the evening, there were a few leftover doses in the vials so the names of willing clinic staff were put into a hat and I was one of the extremely lucky winners of a 2nd shot.

I spent the afternoon weeding, planting and watering our veggie garden. I dressed in a hazmat suit to keep off the tiny LDD moth caterpillars (formerly known as gypsy moths). The hairs on the caterpillars contain toxins that cause itchy welts and rashes on many people, including me. Mercifully, they seem to have grown just a little bigger this week so they can no longer blow on the wind and crawl under clothing undetected.

Apparently, I’m a fragile flower when it comes to manual labour because I finished with a large open blister on the palm of my hand in spite of wearing gardening gloves. So no biking, paddling, dumbbells, rowing, planks or yoga for a few days - doh!

Mountain Biking (Single Track) 2:04:22 [3] 21.7 km (10.5 kph) +351m

Super fun ride with 'Bent around Kolapore. It was a similar route to Saturday with a tweak to shorten the gravel road connector section. I became the Local Legend on a segment that I've posted on Strava twice, lol! (For non-Strava people, that just means that I've ridden it more than anyone else in recent months.)

Riding on uneven rocks is feeling more natural. I'm thinking of it like whitewater where you have to keep paddling through the technical section to prevent disaster. There were trillions of trilliums but the season will be coming to a close soon.

Paddling (Canoe) 1:32:36 [2] 10.81 km (7.0 kph)

Nice Sunday morning paddle on the Nottawasaga River with Goose and Coach LD, followed by lattes and treats in their beautiful new back yard.

Trekking (Trail and Off-Trail) 1:30:00 [1] 8.03 km (11:13 / km) +88m 10:38 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro GTX - Black

I'm now on the Kolapore Trails Committee so I spent the afternoon pulling garlic mustard. Logged at 50% because there was a lot of hiking involved.

I tried not to step on a gazillion Jack-in-the-pulpits! They are so cool. (Btw Merriam Webster says it's also correct to write Jacks-in-the-pulpit, which explains why I wasn't sure which way to go on that.)

Trilliums are still out but it's their last hurrah.

Note

Ultrarunning tragedy in China: Mountain weather turned cold and windy with freezing rain and hail in a high altitude section from 20-31 km of a 100 km race. Of 172 runners, 21 have died and others have been hospitalized - unbelievable and heartbreaking. It’s easy to be an armchair quarterback but it sounds like they may not have had proper weather forecasting, race communications, disaster management plan and mandatory gear list.

Further info from iRunFar, including that Jing Liang, an elite ultrarunner and winner of the past 3 editions of the race, was one of the victims.

Mountain Biking (Single Track) 1:45:06 [3] 19.81 km (11.3 kph) +316m

Ride around Kolapore with Mrs. Gally and Dee. I hadn't seen them for a couple of months so it was great to catch up. This was a nice route with a little gravel road to get between two rideable sections.

Note my pandemic hair "style"!

I was the initial greeter, traffic cop and Dreaded Sanitizer Lady at the Caledon East mass vaccination clinic today. It was interesting and encouraging to see the wide variety of people who wanted their first shot. I was surprised that they don't need to live in Peel Region. There was a full range of ages but there were a number of people in their teens and early 20s. To keep things interesting. I struck up conversations with people who were excited or nervous. A couple of young women dressed up like it was a wedding because they said they had nowhere else to go this year. That's been my plan to celebrate my 2nd shot! :)

The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was that I had to remove my good mask and replace it with their Level 1 surgical mask. 'Bent and I figure I can wear a better mask under their mask next time. It was *really* weird being in a hockey arena full of humans after all these isolated months.

Trekking (Trail & Road) 45:00 [1] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)

Hike around Palgrave village with an Open Orienteering Map. I'm designing a Scavenger Hunt for a seniors' program associated with a local community group. They'll walk to places on the map and answer questions to prove they've been there. I'm getting a draft ready so the program organizer can test it.

I've just been approved for my first volunteer shift at Caledon's mass vaccination clinic. Big smile.

Fun ride with 'Bent on a beautiful morning. Difficulty ranged from flowy to hike-a-bike.

I'm having one of my Pandemic Low days. I'm hoping the combination of mountain biking, sunshine, cuddly dogs (and 'Bent), the Giro d'Italia online, chocolate cheesecake and wine will snap me out of it.

Hike with 'Bent - ran the downhills but made a few stops in the first half as 'Bent used his phone to try to identify bird calls. It was another gorgeous day until ominous clouds started rolling in our direction. We decided to cut it short and go home for lunch.

Looking at the sky, I didn't want to leave my ride until too late in the day.

I rode over to Palgrave East, which was unusually quiet - almost like pre-pandemic times. There were a few groups of hikers and one other biker wearing flashy Euro kit. We've been watching the Giro d'Italia this week and he looked like he would fit in.

The trails are in excellent shape and I'm happy with my technical riding this early in the season. Compared to running, it's nice to do a sport where I don't feel disabled - although damn, I really miss long runs.

It started to sprinkle halfway through my ride. A neighbour said it even snowed briefly. I sure felt the wind chill!

Beautiful spring morning and a fantastic ride around Albion Hills with 'Bent. It's been a very popular place for mountain bikers for many years so we expected it would be a zoo on a pandemic Saturday morning. Surprisingly, it was fairly quiet. We passed one group of bikers and another group passed us, and there were a few hikers on the double track - but it was no worse than Palgrave Forest on a weekday afternoon. Maybe people have decided they don't want to pay to get into Albion Hills? Also, it's a larger trail network. Anyway, we had a great time! The trails are in mint condition although there has been a lot of erosion in the past few years so there are some challenging, rooty climbs that weren't always so challenging. Fun!

Testing my heel on the (somewhat) more even surface of our gravel road and hoping it's not inflamed tomorrow. It was dusty out there when cars went by - not the greatest for breathing, if you're into that sort of thing.

Note

UTMB announced major changes today. They're partnering with Ironman to make UTMB a World Championship.

Instead of awarding ITRA points to finishers of certified races, there will be 30+ World Series races associated with UTMB, some of which are designated as World Series Majors. Top finishers of these races get automatic entry to one of the UTMB races.

Regular people like me would have to finish at least one of the World Series races, although there's a lot more to it. At the moment, they haven't announced any World Series races in North America, and they could choose races that are already difficult to get into, like Western States or Hardrock. There is a mysterious "Loyalty Program" that might bypass some of the requirements but they haven't announced how it will work.

I doubt I ever would have had the chance to do UTMB and CCC under these new rules so I'm grateful that I got to go, but I'm sorry for friends who were still waiting for their chance. Upon their 3rd application, they would have been guaranteed entry under the old system.
