Strength & Mobility 45:00 intensity: (5:00 @3) + (30:00 @4) + (10:00 @5)

Workout with Mrs. Gally's class - Circuit with weights, focusing on the upper body and core. There were 17 people today!

Note

'Bent looked studious while doing his Continuing Dental Education.

Running (Treadmill) 30:00 [2] 3.46 km (8:40 / km)
shoes: Salomon XR Mission

After 16 days without any running and very little hiking on uneven ground, I returned to the treadmill to try another walk/run. This time I used the Barefoot Science inserts that I've been wearing indoors. I don't think the time off has made much difference; it doesn't seem to be an injury that improves with rest. I'll see if easing into running changes things much. If I have to be sore, I may as well be running! I look forward to my sports chiro becoming an essential worker again.

Mountain Biking (Single Track) 1:14:47 [3] 14.75 km (11.8 kph) +283m

My return to running will have to wait. Today was crisp, cool and sunny, and the Palgrave single track was dry and relatively quiet. It would be a crime to run on a treadmill when I could ride on such a beautiful day! The next few days are forecast to be rainy so I'll get down to the Adventure Basement soon enough. [Used bike computer distance since the watch isn't as good with single track.]

Dentists in France are expected to return to work soon in spite of the worldwide PPE shortage. They are protesting in a very NSFW French way, saying that they feel naked without proper PPE - oh la la! Note that 'Bent will *not* be joining the protest. :D

Note

I spent way too much time today doing background calculations for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy for 'Bent's dental office employees. Then it was time for Zoom beers with Hingo and Luscious to celebrate what would have been our finish line at the Costa Brava Stage Race in Spain today.

Tomorrow I'll try a short treadmill walk/run! Today marks two weeks without running - also no hiking on uneven ground. Sadly, that didn't fix whatever structural problem my foot has but the pain is minor. Last month it seemed that treadmill walk/runs had no effect on the foot so I'll start back with that. 'Bent is cooking so much yummy food that I'd like to run a little!

Sore pecs today from yesterday's Crossfit experiment! My push-up game needs work.

Strength & Mobility (Crossfit) 37:00 intensity: (4:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (23:00 @5)

My first ever home Crossfit WOD - with AMRAP-ing and everything! Baloney sent us instructions for "Hero WOD Heidi", a workout named after Constable Heidi Stevenson, who died tragically in the line of duty last week. She was a Mountie for 23 years so we did 23 reps of each exercise for a seemingly interminable 23 minutes. I had to do some scaling, of course - no jumps on my injured foot and I did knee push-ups. It was tough and fun, and I kept Constable Stevenson in my thoughts.

Time includes warm-up and a much-needed outdoor cooldown. I should have done the whole thing outside.

Also fun was the DGL Attackpoint Zoom session that Hammer organized today. Wifi problems knocked a few people off the call but it was great to catch up on news from friends in isolation.

Note

This week Ultra Trail Snowdonia, our trail ultra in Wales, was postponed from June 12-14 to Sept. 18-20.

(a) It's about time, and
(b) Seriously, September?

At this point, most race directors have realized that autumn weekends were already full of races before this happened, and the schedule has become even busier as events have been shuffled back on the calendar. Aside from that, it will be a challenge for big ultras to meet whatever health requirements might exist by this fall.

Since 'Bent and I can't go in September, our other option was a 70% refund. We would rather defer our entries to 2021 but that wasn't permitted since the event is expected to change next year. In the end, we decided to donate our full entry fees to the race director since he is having an even crappier year than we are.

So now the next race on our calendar is RockstAR in late July.

Mountain Biking (Single Track) 1:02:55 [3] 12.15 km (11.6 kph) +234m

Another sunny ride in Palgrave East, hitting some different trails this time. A nice break from paperwork.

It looks like 'Bent had trouble concentrating on his work today.

Mountain Biking (Single Track) 58:07 [3] 11.19 km (11.6 kph) +252m

Sunny ride around Palgrave East. The single track was dry and perfect. I met a pair of trail runners and a pair of mountain bikers, and we avoided each other nicely. At one trail junction, I turned off just as another rider flew out of the woods from another direction, apparently without looking. Otherwise, the forest was quiet and absolutely wonderful. :) Much more fun than working on taxes - but that's all the fun for me today!

Note

Mom left us a year ago today. It feels like yesterday and it feels like a different lifetime. I've thought of her a lot lately. Mom taught home economics, and as I've started baking and sewing again during the pandemic, I've remembered her lessons and felt her hand guiding mine. I've had time to sit at her piano and play music - but not nearly as well as she did. I miss Mom every day but I'm blessed that she's always with me and always will be.

1 PM

Mountain Biking (Trail) 48:33 [3] 10.02 km (12.4 kph) +184m

First mountain bike ride of the season - fun! I rode over to Palgrave East and had a great ride on single and double track. I won't be going there on sunny Saturday afternoons for a while, though - too many other people to dodge.

This was Day 7 of a week without running or hiking - an experiment to see how that would affect my heel pain. It's improved but the usual niggle remains, and I expect it will flare up again as soon as I do anything. I'm gaining weight from 'Bent's excellent cooking so I need to get more active again.

Note

'Bent took the pooches for a walk around 5 pm and returned within 10 minutes. Poor AdventureDog had sliced himself open on the side - a cut about 3 cm long right through the skin. In normal circumstances, he would go to a vet for stitches but these aren't normal circumstances. Our vet office was closed, as was another office owned by a friend. Our only option for professional care was to drive into Brampton and wait outside the vet emergency clinic until they could take A-Dog. Ugh.

But... this couldn't be *that* different from dentistry, could it? 'Bent phoned his sister Mimi, a veterinarian, who asked us to email a photo. She suggested that we use a few surgical staples to close it up. (She gave 'Bent a surgical stapler a few years ago after he fixed up a badly injured guy while we were mountain biking.) We read Dr. Mimi the names of all the dog medications we've saved over the years, and she suggested a combination that would make him drowsy and control the pain somewhat. 'Bent went to his office to pick up some Lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, to flush the wound. He asked about injecting a local anaesthetic (it's one of 'Bent's hobbies) but Dr. Mimi said that bothers dogs more than staples do.

AdventureDog was a little groggy but not so groggy that he didn't notice what 'Bent was doing. Although I tried my best to distract him with peanut butter on a teaspoon, he expressed his displeasure each time a surgical staple went in. We sent a final photo of the stapled incision to Dr. Mimi, who was impressed at 'Bent's work. To save Hammer from seeing blood, I won't post it here. Anyway, mission accomplished. Now we just have to watch for infection.

Poor injured pooch.

Staple time.

'Bent finishing up his work. Peanut butter jar in the background was no longer needed by this point.

Adventure-Dog looking at me suspiciously post-surgery.

Strength & Mobility 45:00 [4]

Another great Zoom circuit class with weights, led by Mrs. Gally. The club sells online training passes by the week so I wanted to do at least two classes. I don't like exercising in the morning until after I've exercised in the morning - and then I really like it.

Also, I've never liked the overhead time of driving anywhere to do a workout. We live in the boonies and our Adventure Basement is reasonably well equipped. A Zoom workout is a nice compromise where I can stay home and still have someone push me harder than I would push myself. I signed up this week mostly to be a supportive friend but I might keep going - maybe alternate weeks.
6 PM

Note

Much needed Zoom Happy Hour with Dee and Mrs. Gally. 'Bent FaceTimed with Mr. Gally at the same time so it was a big social evening in our household. I think we might even "attend" Open Mic Night at The Crow tonight. Thank God our rural Internet has been working reasonably well. I hope it's true that Rogers isn't charging for data overage. If this lasts much longer, maybe we'll even give Netflix a try.

Wednesday Apr 15, 2020 #

Note

And it's official: Air Canada cancelled our flight to the U.K. for Ultra Trail Snowdonia in June. They're keeping our money but they'll let us fly somewhere else within the next 24 months. The event website is still stubbornly accepting entries for the June 12-14 race weekend. Our first week of overpriced accommodation in Wales is theoretically non-refundable although the hotel has been closed so maybe we can negotiate a deal. Instead of *having* a vacation this year, it looks like we may just pay for one. ;( I kinda wish I hadn't been so diligent about making travel plans for 2020.

Strength & Mobility 45:00 [4]

Zoom circuit class with Mrs. Gally through Collingwood's Buddha Rider studio. What a slave driver, lol! Good way to start a long day of work on corporate taxes.
6 PM

Strength & Mobility 5:00 [1]

Some foothab after a fun Zoom Happy Hour with Crash. The most painful thing I did to my gimpy right foot all day was 1-footed balance with eyes closed. Maybe I'll give that a break temporarily.

Note

Trav and Baloney have started a trend! Although the handmade treadmill takes it to a new level. (Click on Youtube to see a larger version.)

5 PM

Strength & Mobility (Core) 20:00 [3]

C3 core workout with Luis Lopez on YouTube. Ouch.

Strength & Mobility 5:00 [1]

Foothab. I was deliberately very easy on my heel today since I want to try to calm it down, then experiment to figure out what makes it flare up. There aren't many days when I only do one thing that could bother it. I dug out my old Barefoot Science insoles and wore them in my indoor shoes. The idea is that you're supposed to increase the level of arch support when you become accustomed to the current level. They feel helpful so I'll keep using them.

Happy Easter to you!

Dad took great joy in giving me a big Toblerone chocolate bar every Christmas. When the tradition started, I protested feebly that no adult needed that much chocolate but I soon stopped pretending. Mom's treat came in the spring when she gave me a yummy chocolate bunny. She passed away just before Easter last year and it was several months before I could bring myself to eat the last bunny I would ever receive from her.

I've been buying Christmas Toblerones in Dad's honour and, for the first time, this year I had to be my own Easter Bunny too. Actually, the Bunny has been a little *too* generous with the chocolate lately.

I posted this on Facebook but it may be of interest here too. If you’ve read about the simulation that suggested fast cyclists could potentially infect people within 20 meters, Dr. Jennifer Kasten M.D. has some reassuring science for you - although you should still exercise alone or with family members. For non-Facebookers, I'll put the text of her post in a comment.

Thanks to Hammer for organizing a post-SMT coffee chat on Zoom this morning - even though he doesn't drink coffee. It was great to see so many good friends and share our different stories at this weird time in the world. Such a nice blast of connection and semi-normality. :)

9 AM

Running (Treadmill) 30:00 [2] 3.56 km (8:26 / km)

Treadmill walk/run. I dared to bump it up to 1 minute walking, 2 minutes running, which seemed OK. Today's entertainment was one of the Red Bull TV films recommended by Funderstorm. - awesome.
10 AM

Strength & Mobility 3:00 [1]

I did heel drops for insertional Achilles tendinopathy, which is my best Google diagnosis while I can't see a health care professional. I've been doing heel drops on and off with no problem but my foot didn't like the bent-knee version that I added from a physio website. Oops, it really hurts now. I guess that was too advanced.

In case you missed this. :) For anyone who missed the original moment in his press conference a few days ago, check the link below.

The original moment. Regardless of your political views, I can't imagine how tough it must be to answer questions in two languages in daily press conferences at such a challenging, fast-moving time. I'm surprised there aren't more foot-in-mouth moments!
https://globalnews.ca/news/6792967/coronavirus-tru...

Tomorrow will be Trudeau's 27th consecutive daily press conference then he's taking two days off to spend Easter with his family. For 14 days of these press conferences, his wife Sophie was quarantined with Covid-19 so he was also alone in the house with 3 kids - yikes.

5 PM

Strength & Mobility 16:00 [1]

Foothab. Treadmill walk-runs don't bother my sore heel. Running on uneven terrain really bothers it. Hiking seems OK if the ground isn't too rough. This week my heel flared up badly after I went grocery shopping, came home, cleaned our food and walked around the house without indoor shoes. It's a good reminder not to be lazy about that. Things have reached a new low when washing apples leaves me in pain.

'Bent normally celebrates the Passover Seder with his family. This year it was a Virtual Seder connecting 6 households, 15 people, 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 generations, 3 time zones, 3 provinces, 1 territory and surprisingly few technical glitches. It was an unqualified success. The octogenarian Moms were surprisingly comfortable with it, and the 5-year-old twins knew more features of Zoom than anyone else on the call.

Matzah (unleavened bread) is an integral part of the Seder meal but 'Bent couldn't find it locally. His 82-year-old Mom wanted to drive an hour to bring him some from Toronto because she viewed it as an emergency worth taking risks for. Luckily, Adriana Roche, the owner of Gourmandissimo, saved the day by agreeing to make matzah for him.

Tuesday Apr 7, 2020 #

Note

Yesterday, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer said that cloth masks are a reasonable measure to protect others from asymptomatic transmission in areas where physical distancing can't be maintained, e.g. shopping and public transit. So I grabbed a bandana and made a no-sew mask in 2 minutes. Not exactly fashionable! I’ll sew a real one before my next shopping trip.

I was shocked at the number of people I saw wearing N95 and surgical masks in the grocery store. We still have some masks in the dental office after donating most of them to the hospital but they're so valuable for health care right now that I didn't want to use one for shopping. P.S. Grocery shopping these days feels like going to war. Such a bizarre world.

Note

Some wonderful things happened today!
- Delicious homemade bread was delivered to the hood of my car by Coach LD
- A friend presented a great Zoom slide show and we saw some adventure racing friends.
- 'Bent cooked another great dinner. I am spoiled.

And one stressful thing that kept me awake - a whiny rant from someone we've been helping. Not everyone is at their best right now.

Trekking (Trail) 32:25 [1] 3.37 km (9:37 / km) +84m 8:33 / km
shoes: Salomon S-Lab Wings 8

AdventureDog and I hiked around sunny Palgrave West and didn't see a soul. My foot felt better today than yesterday. I'm taking that to mean that yesterday's 30-minute treadmill walk/run had no negative impact on my injury. It may even have helped but I'll need to experiment some more.

Such a beautiful day!

Saturday Apr 4, 2020 #

4 PM

Running (Treadmill) 30:00 [2] 3.47 km (8:39 / km)
shoes: Salomon XR Mission

Another treadmill walk-run - 1 minute on, 1 minute off - while catching up on Mountain Outpost. I'd rather be on the trails in our forest but if I want to get back to running for real, I'd better stick to activities that don't seem to bother my heel. Hiking on a relatively even trail seems fine too but rough or steep terrain is not good.

I'm trying to focus on the silver lining of having several months (or more) without racing or meeting up with friends. There will be less temptation to run earlier than I should. I just need the will power to take things really slowly. It would be helpful if I could get my foot loosened up by Dr. Thumbs-of-Death but that won't be possible for a long time. I may have to learn chiropractic techniques on YouTube. (I was going to insert a winky-smiley here but I can't guarantee I won't try!)

Strength & Mobility 16:00 [1]

Foothab after another busy pandemic day. We crunched numbers and finalized our plan on how to keep 'Bent's staff paid in the coming months. Next there will be some applications to fill out but they're not available yet.

Next week: Updated communications to patients. Also, teledentistry has been approved temporarily but what will that really mean?

And it's the weekend, woo hoo.

Trekking (Trail) 33:00 [1] 3.37 km (9:48 / km) +84m 8:42 / km

Brisk lunch break hike in Palgrave West to enjoy the sunshine and the forest. AdventureDog supervised me.
5 PM

Running (Country Road) 38:51 [2] 4.84 km (8:01 / km) +87m 7:22 / km
shoes: Salomon S-Lab Wings 8

I'd planned a treadmill walk-run since my gimpy foot seems OK with a flat surface. Unfortunately, it wasn't as happy with orienteering on uneven terrain a few days ago, even though I didn't do much running.

It was such a gorgeous day that I tried a walk-run to the nearest mailbox with a letter. I started with 1 minute on, 1 minute off, then started playing around with it.

Even though it was rush hour, only one car drove by. The world is *really* quiet out there, which is super weird but good. I felt conspicuous.

Note

Today, Aviva announced that they don’t need another week after all to decide whether this situation meets the criteria for Canadian dentists to make a claim on their pandemic insurance. If they pay the full amount, it will cover a month of payroll, which is ‘Bent’s largest expense by far while no revenue is coming in. Every little bit helps. The new government programs will be much more helpful though.
