Managed Wilderness Traverse Race HQ - 35 hours without sleep but it was exciting as always and fun to see so many friends.

Short sleep after staying up until the wee hours learning about the Yellowbrick trackers that arrived last night, then writing a Wilderness Traverse Emergency Protocol based on them. No problem, I can catch up on sleep this weekend - NOT!

Race check-in took place at our host site, Grand Tappattoo Resort near Parry Sound.

Many thanks to Pat Chan, who flew out from Edmonton to help us out at WT HQ!

Another WT preparation day. I was planning a long, productive evening but the power has gone out with an estimate of 3 hours to restore it. So I can't use my electronics (for long), can't make dinner and can't drink water. I guess I could pack by headlamp. I'm thirsty already!

I thought about running. Sigh.

If you haven't seen it, Cristina Gordhun dug up this amazing vintage video made by Orienteering Ontario at "the first championship event in Canada" in the late sixties. "A sport of mind and muscle!"

I'm getting bored with recovering but it's been hard to sneak away from the computer without feeling guilty. Today I had the perfect excuse! I needed to check a large construction site at Albion Hills that Coach LD had told me about. I wondered what impact it would have on our Star Tracks Mountain Bike Adventure courses. Mick and I had finished up the course design and mapwork in August - or so we thought.

I rode at the site from different sides to figure out where all the fences were. I can't figure out what they're doing but it sure affects a large area. We won't have to change the Open course but we might tweak the Novice course.

Then I went to Deer Run to check out a campsite that Funderstorm recommended for the pre-race camping that we're trying to encourage on Sat. Oct. 14. Nick is organizing a couple of low key training races that evening, one of them after dark. The Stars will provide marshmallows and the first bag of firewood for the communal fire!

Only a few more days for earlybird entries to Star Tracks.

Separate entry for Sat. evening races (very inexpensive)
https://stars.whyjustrun.ca/events/view/3104

Please let me know if you plan to camp. You'll book directly with Albion Hills but I'm thinking we can help people share sites to keep costs down.

P.S. I love my new bike. It's hard to remember that I ever felt awkward on this 29er.

Although it looks like I'm doing nothing, this is "volunteer work season" when I work more than fulltime on Wilderness Traverse, Star Tracks and Orienteering Ontario. I really need to get outside before this beautiful weather ends though!

After a meeting with the host site, Bob and I celebrated the last day of summer by checking a few things around the race course. It was hot, sunny and beautiful.

Volunteer work can be taxing but luckily I'm willing to give till it hurts. We look forward to welcoming racers next weekend!

I have lots of catching up to do, both on AP and everywhere else. 'Bent and I made it home from Italy last night after scoring business class tickets with our frequent flyer points.

It was ridiculously good. Tired after racing? Why not adjust your seat so it lies completely flat, then use your full-sized pillow and fluffy duvet for a little nap? Then drink a few glasses of good wine and enjoy a 4-course lunch followed by a movie on a big personal screen. If I had money, I think I would splurge on this for any flight over 6 hours. But sadly, that's not going to happen. Anyway, it's great to be home. :)

(Copied from Facebook - dot watching details.) Tomorrow Richard Ehrlich and I start Ultra Tour Monte Rosa - a mountain run around the 2nd highest Alp, passing through Switzerland and Italy. We're doing it as a 4-day stage race with a total distance of 170 km and 11,300 meters of elevation gain.

For anyone interested in watching our live GPS trackers, we'll start Tues. midnight Ontario time (6 am Wed. in Switzerland). We have 12 hrs to finish each stage. Stage 2 starts Wed. midnight Ontario time, etc. My bib# is 518; Richard's is 533. GPS tracking is here.

Race timing is here; I assume they'll record our passage through a few checkpoints each day.
https://www.racematix.com/site/#entry:grp/Ultra-To...

On Day 1, we go from Grächen to Zermatt, Switzerland. On Day 2, we finish in Gressoney, Italy. We go to Macugnaga, Italy on Day 3, and we finish the circuit back at Grächen on Day 4.

So far we've met runners from Japan, Scotland, the Netherlands, the U.S., England and Switzerland. Looking forward to the adventure!

'Bent and I took the cable car up the Klein Matterhorn to Matterhorn Paradise where they have a restaurant (of course!), access for mountaineering and ski-mo, and a marked, crevasse-free (we hoped), snowy trail along a wide ridge - all at almost 4,000 m elevation. 'Bent and I hiked to the Italian border at the end of the groomed path and hung out for awhile hoping that our bodies might make some extra red blood cells. :) We had spectacular views of the Matterhorn, Breithorn, Monte Rosa, Mont Blanc and more.

The groomed trail

We checked out what we could see of our race route - daunting but pretty.

Trekking 50:00 intensity: (25:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) 3.16 km (15:48 / km) +220m 11:44 / km

On the way down, we stopped at Schwartzsee and hiked toward the Matterhorn for a better look. We stopped at 2,770 m elevation and resolved to return some day to hike to the Hörnli Hut.

This is Monte Rosa.

On Day 2 of Ultra-Tour Monte Rosa, we'll start down in Zermatt and climb 1600+ m over Theodulpass into Italy, crossing a glacier on a marked path. I'm sure the Hockley Valley prepared me for that. ;(

So far our Deluxe Matterhorn View room is working out really well.

It wasn't worth taking a cable car up high today so 'Bent and I ran and hiked up the valley toward the Matterhorn, stopping for lunch in the small hamlet of Zmutt. It's a popular, well-maintained trail.

This is Zmutt. Like our hotel room, it has a fabulous view of the Matterhorn. I know that because I googled it.

It is the hub for trails to everywhere.

2 PM

Running (Trail) 21:52 [3] 3.28 km (6:40 / km) +6m 6:36 / km

After lunch, we ran back down to Zermatt at a good pace.

Back in town, we visited the Mountaineers' Cemetery including the grave of the Unknown Climber. Most other tombstones had names of one or more climbers and the mountain they died on.

From reading the tombstones, it's clear that men should never climb mountains between the ages of 20 and 30. Sadly, that demographic was greatly over-represented.

'Bent and I arrived in Zermatt this afternoon. It cost a bit extra for a Matterhorn View room but we are eternal optimists. The sky has to clear up eventually, right?

I can't resist the chocolate croissants but I'll be skipping this.
