Note

The Salomon Toronto store closed on Sunday night for renovations that will last until November. As the closing date approached, I thought about whether I should make a trip down to the city but I couldn't think of anything I needed. Given my extensive outdoor gear collection, it was almost laughable to think about *needing* anything more.

Right on cue, an hour before the store closed, when I was hopelessly out of range in Milton, the eyelet broke on my precious Fellcross shoes so I can't tighten them properly. These are my orienteering shoes and the North American Orienteering Championships are two weeks away. Aacckk!! On the bright side, I guess it's good to have an excuse prepared for my NAOC results.

After Saturday's ride, I revised the Star Tracks MTBO course to add a little distance and make it less likely that riders will choose road routes for a couple of legs. I'm done now. I think the Regular Course will be enough for a lot of people but there is an Advanced Option and I'm also thinking about a Super Duper Insanely Advanced option - you know, in case Bob comes.

I rode most of the Regular Course today with some stops to check out trail changes that may affect route choice. Mick and I will still have a few more map updates but it's in pretty good shape.

Now I just have to finalize the Novice Long and Novice Short courses. Novice Long is proving to be a tricky concept. My intended target demographic was a person with good mountain biking skills and limited nav skills. The thing about MTBO is that navigation isn't all that tricky because flags are on trails. The hard thing is understanding the map. So maybe Novice Long will do the same course but get extra info plus an introduction to O maps from a friendly volunteer. Still thinking about that.

I need to print off an event flyer since I am constantly meeting riders who are interested in what I'm doing. Chivalry is not dead. When I've been course testing at Albion, at least once every 30 minutes some gentleman has stopped to make sure I'm not lost. I guess it is alarming to see someone stopped on the side of a bike trail staring at a big, colourful map.

Note

I added a few photos in Saturday's log to highlight the Big Event Of The Weekend - the wedding of Matt Wong, son of our original, longtime AR teammate, The Minister (Ming). My first memory of Matt is an enthusiastic 6-year-old joining us for mountain bike rides in Palgrave. He's now a project manager with a Waterloo engineering degree and - as of Saturday - an athletic, witty, animal-loving wife, Rachel. They have done two DontGetLost Raids so far, and several speeches mentioned "adventure running" so I suspect we will all see them again.

I wanted to support the C3 Caledon Running Festival and was curious to see how bad a 10K race would feel after focusing on long slow distance for two years. It was nice to wear hot weather running clothes but not so nice to run in hot weather.

The race route was 5 km of rail trail and 5 km of rolling hills on a paved road. It wasn't difficult but road runners wouldn't expect a PB on it. My only goal was to not place last since it was a small field, consisting mostly of keen triathletes. I achieved my goal but set a Personal Worst time and only barely escaped the bottom 10%!

Within the first kilometer, I caught up with a boy who had fallen back from the main pack but was still looking good. I didn't want his spirit to be crushed as a result of being passed by some old lady in a skirt so I smiled and said, "Hey, come with me. You have nice running form." Ten-year-old Pete and I became buddies over the next 6.5 km until I pushed him to go ahead since I was fading in the heat. He did his first 10K last year at age nine and is keen to do a half marathon next year and an Ironman some day. I suspect he will.

Near the finish line, someone was cheering and calling my name - thanks, Coach LD! I was a little lightheaded from the heat when I first stopped running. One good thing about this race was that it provided more clarity to my thinking about future goals. I am clearly *not* able to do 10K races so my optimum distance lies somewhere between 10K and 168K. I still need to narrow that down a little more.

As I was chatting with 'Bent and Caron, a man came up and said, "Barb?" I didn't recognize him as he stuck out his hand to shake mine. Then I looked down and saw my running buddy Pete beaming and standing proudly beside his Dad, who had come to thank me for encouraging his son on the race course. That was the highlight of this event. :)

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1] ****
shoes: Salomon S-LAB FellCross

There was a training session available to DontGetLost Adventure Card holders at Rocky Ridge today at the same time as our 10K. I arranged with Meghan that we would take down the flags so that 'Bent and I could get some pre-NAOC training. Neither of us has done much orienteering all year so it's not going to be pretty when we get to Ottawa in two weeks!

We did this at a walking pace, navigating mostly separately and meeting at each control. Since we both forgot to turn on our GPS watches, here is AdventureGirl!'s track.

'Bent may be one of the few people in the world to do a Mountain Bike - 10K running race - Orienteering workout combo today.

After setting version 1 of the Star Tracks mountain bike orienteering course, I was so excited that I had to head out and test part of it, even though it was almost sunset. This is waaaay more fun than riding around to create GPS tracks of trails. In testing routes, I discovered some minor updates Mick and I need to make to the map so I ended up doing a little more GPS riding as well. It got dark long before I was done so I'll get to go back again soon. Time deducted for longer stops.

Quick run around Palgrave West before a meeting of the Albion Hills Public Advisory Committee to discuss the trail plan. Unlike the Palgrave trail plan a few years ago, this one is pretty much all good news. Not surprising since Albion Hills is viewed as a "destination" - unlike Palgrave, which is a "forest and wildlife area".

I gave Thumbs-of-Death money to inflict more pain on my shoulder - actually all *around* my shoulder - biceps, pec and some mystery point on my upper back that he just has to press and it feels like I've been stabbed. I managed not to scream or leap up but couldn't relax my muscles very much - including my face, which totally gave me away. I could really feel the difference after last week's treatment but it's going to be a long road with lots of stretching and strength exercises.

Fantastic autumn weather! :)

Rainy weekend in Algonquin Park including heavy rain through the night. This was the view through our windshield on our way to the Track and Tower Trail.

'Bent was brave to run with BazingaDog in such wet conditions - especially on a trail with so many slippery wooden bridges, boardwalks and staircases.

We hiked this trail a year ago because my heel pain (retrocalcaneal bursitis) had just been officially declared an injury and I wasn't allowed to run. The weather was exactly the same then so we will be curious to see this trail in sunshine some day. I was super cautious on the slippery roots and muddy slopes; conditions were perfect for an ankle injury.

Although it's hard to see it through the fog, the Track and Tower lookout is one of the nicest views I've seen in the park.

We took a different "drowned rat" selfie this year to go along with the one we got last year.

One nice thing about all the rain this weekend was that the creeks were flowing high; they looked amazing.

I'd like to say that the Group of Seven painted this spot because it looks like they should have. Maybe GHOSLO can find a painting to match!

Time includes photo and dog swim breaks. GPS data adjusted due to silly user error. Here's last year's report with full track. http://ar.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_920/per...

Paddling (Canoe) 15:00 [1]

The rain stopped on the way home. We visited my brother's antique store in Gravenhurst, the Gypsy Market Mews, then dropped by his cottage to take Mocha for another short paddle. She was just as excited as yesterday. The ever-enthusiastic BazingaDog had to wait in the car.

We're staying in a cottage in Oxtongue Lake outside Algonquin Park. We brought the dogs so the first order of the day was to tire out BazingaDog.

We've been coming up here for years but have usually stayed in the park. Today we learned for the first time about the XC ski trail network behind Algonquin Outfitters in Oxtongue Lake. There is also a surprisingly nice hiking trail - the Beetle Lake Loop. It's hilly but I forgot my Ambit today so will have to wait for 'Bent to download his Garmin to get the elevation gain. The time includes photo stops, dog breaks, etc.

We weren't sure if it was hunting season so we wore our bright please-don't-shoot-me shirts. We heard shotguns in this area later so it must be the season for something up here.

Yes, BazingaDog's tongue is almost as large as his head.

It felt good to be running again. I'm sure I haven't recovered from UTMB yet but I'm getting there.

Note

This is our annual anniversary trip, two weeks after the date. So after lunch at Arowhon Pines, where we had our wedding reception, we went to Joe Lake, where we were married on a canoe campsite.
5 PM

Paddling (Canoe) 1:00:00 [2]

We've never brought the dogs on our anniversary trip before but we hated to leave Mocha when she doesn't have much time left. One of our priorities was to take her canoeing. She and Tobler used to canoe with us but BazingaDog can't be trusted in a canoe so it had been more than 3 years since Mocha had gone paddling.

She was visibly excited to get in the boat and happily sniffed new smells as we went north up Oxtongue Lake. I'm so glad we were able to take her out. If the rain stops (she doesn't enjoy it), we'll take her out for another paddle tomorrow.

Our run this morning took us to the top of this cliff.

Many of you are familiar with Mr. and Mrs. GHOSLO's hobby of searching for Group of Seven painting locations. I had no idea it was so easy. ;) This sign was on the lakeshore.

GHOSLO's photo would have been better though.

Today was a big day up here for Group of Seven fans. There was an Arts Festival in Oxtongue Lake that featured the granddaughter of A.J. Casson unveiling a plaque. A local man has located a bunch of Group of Seven painting sites in the immediate area, and there were hiking and boat tours to some of the sites after the ceremony.

Off to Brantford to help my parents.

Last week Calgary's Nicki Rehn finished an amazing 7th female in the 330 km Tor des Geants - an Italian mountain ultra race that is based in Courmayeur and overlaps a small portion of the UTMB course. When I read her excellent report, it reminded me of why I've loved UTMB so much. I suspect for some other people, the report will further convince them that they *never* want to do such a thing!

Nice lunch with Dee followed by a torture session with Thumbs-of-Death where I really struggled to make friendly conversation instead of screaming and making a break for it. He doesn't think I need shoulder surgery but I should expect a lot of time, physio and pain before it's fixed. On the bright side, for once I don't have any injury bothering me *more* than my shoulder so I can finally focus on it.

After 4+ hours of mountain biking in the past two days, my shoulder is aching enough to banish any hope of spending the autumn paddling and riding. I've made an appointment with Thumbs-of-Death tomorrow to get started on fixing that. A slightly torn rotator cuff has been bugging me a little over the past 3.5 years but apparently I did something horrible to it on the way to France.

So... I guess I'll be running. This was my first run since UTMB (not counting Bob & Hermes' pre-wedding adventure run). Over the past 10 days, my musculoskeletal system has felt strong and my cardio has been pretty good - for low intensity activity, anyway. But I get fatigued more easily than usual, I sometimes feel tired in the middle of the day, and I'm sleeping much better than I normally do. (Perhaps this isn't all bad.) It's not a serious issue but I notice the difference.

We've been home almost two weeks so I don't think jet lag is a factor anymore. I guess it's whatever happens to my body after 32 hours of pushing non-stop on mountain trails. Hormones, immune system, inflammation - whatever. One of my Ironman friends told me that she used to take a day off racing for every kilometer she raced in a triathlon. Wow! Adventure athletes tend to underestimate their recovery needs but I think that's going a little overboard.

Today's run felt fine. I was just plodding along and would not have been able to speed up if a bear were chasing me but it didn't feel bad at all. Not even a hint of the tenosynovitis in my right foot so maybe it was just a short term thing post-race. Nice to dodge the occasional bullet!

Note

Because I've been working on next month's MTBO map at Albion Hills, I got thinking about the last pure MTBO event in southern Ontario in May 2009. It was hosted by the Caledon Navigators and I was the race director.

I looked up the results and now I'm issuing a challenge! Six Attackpointers made the podium. They competed in Open Men, Open Women and Masters Men.

Hints: Attackpointers swept the Open Women podium. The top two Open Men blew away the rest of the field. The 3rd Open Man is frequently mentioned on AP and has raced with APers but has never logged here. Might as well try to guess him too.

No looking at the results. Who were these 7 talented MTBO-ers in 2009?

When the worst thing that happens to you all weekend is a software glitch that forces you to do the same mountain bike ride twice, there's not much to complain about. Luckily, my commitment for today got postponed so I was able to sneak out and re-do the portion of yesterday's ride that I needed to GPS for Mick. Making a map involves some hike-a-biking and backtracking so the average speed is sloooow. No one else was on the trails today.

Would you like to have a forested trail network out your back door? Would you enjoy sharing your back yard with deer, bunnies and coyotes (probably not all at the same time)? Are you tired of your reasonable commute? Are you quiet after 10 p.m., do you keep your outside lights to a minimum on starry nights, and do you play music at a reasonable volume when you have parties? Are you still interested in hanging out with Bash and 'Bent after reading our logs on Attackpoint?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, why not consider moving in next door to us? Over the years, we've had several different neighbours in this house and it hasn't always gone well. (Remember the huge human-started bush fire that burned down 70 acres of beautiful forest and meadow, including an acre at the back of our place?) We like Attackpointers. We would like you to be our neighbours. Our neighbours' place is much nicer than our place. Please think about it. :)

The most interesting part of this ad was the "Demographics" tab for our neighbourhood, which I've never seen before. I guess 'Bent is the 1 person who works in Health, which seems a little surprising.

With the Star Tracks mountain bike event coming up on Oct. 19, I needed to get back out to Albion Hills to finish making GPS tracks of the entire trail system. Mick has been diligently updating the Albion Hills map each time I've done one of these rides. Even though AH is our back yard, I've been blown away at the size and complexity of the trail network. We tend to ride the same trails so I never thought it would take so many hours of riding to cover every piece of trail.

I made a big push today to ride all the remaining trails, then I went back to other parts of the park to check on trails Mick had found on the old map that hadn't shown up on my previous tracks. Some of them are closed or no longer exist, some are now "rides" instead of trails, and one was mowed recently and looks like a trail again.

Then I came home and triumphantly downloaded my Ambit to my repaired laptop. Maybe because everything has been re-installed, Moveslink insisted on a firmware update to my watch - and that obliterated the log of my ride. :(((( So now I have to go back out and do it again. Ugh. At least my legs felt pretty good and the hills seemed low.

Half an hour deducted for map reading and writing.

No, it's not much sleep but it's a solid amount for someone rebuilding a computer from scratch! I've learned that I'm good at backing up data but much too trusting when it comes to applications. I've probably bought legit copies of MS Office 5 or 6 times in my life but Microsoft hasn't heard of me. Not entirely their fault, as I provide minimal personal info when I purchase anything online. Same with Adobe. How many of their products have I bought yet they seemingly have no record of anything? Why didn't they send me confirmation e-mails when I paid? Why didn't I register the products? (Probably to avoid spam.) I don't pirate software. Lesson learned big time but anyway, this is the easy stuff. If I'd lost family photos, they couldn't be replaced with money.

'Bent and I went to Argentiere and took the cable car up to Les Grands Montets.

At 3233 meters of altitude, it's not quite as high as the Aiguille du Midi where we went last week but the views are spectacular, and we practically had the place to ourselves. Highly recommended.

Here's the view toward the magical Aiguille du Midi and Mont Blanc. (If you look closely, you might see the Carbons.)

We saw some climbers. I got their e-mail ID later so I could send them photos.

It was freezing up there - actually below freezing - but spectacular. As we got off the cable car, I was impressed to see an older woman with two canes making her way down from the lookout on the steep, icy, open staircase that clung to the rock face. As we passed each other, she flashed a big smile and said, "It is very good." What a great attitude!

Now that my shoulder is working again, I had to take another selfie.

Our time here is almost up so I took some photos from our apartment balcony tonight. If anyone is ever planning to stay in Chamonix, this has been a great place.
