Many longtime adventure racers know Rene Noel and his wife Susannah Lavallee. Susannah's sister Chantelle became a Mom just over two weeks ago. When her baby was 13 days old, she inexplicably suffered a cardiac arrest. Incredibly, her husband had just taken CPR in anticipation of becoming a father, and he saved her life. Have you brushed up on CPR lately? This was a reminder for me. This link is the City TV news interview with Chantelle and Brian.

First Highlands Nordic ski of the season. Very good conditions for their first week open. Coach LD, KD and I carpooled early, and Goose came up later. 'Bent went for a long run since Lookout Mountain is only two weeks away, and he missed 8 days of training when he was volunteering in Belize.

The only bad news is that the repetitive motion of classic skiing hurt my foot. I hope it won't turn out to be a big deal but if I can't ski *or* run... I don't even want to think about that. It was a fantastic morning. :)

I can't remember when I've done 6.5 hours of skiing in the first week of Ontario snow!

A few hours after skiing, I've bought a big Christmas tree, sawed off the extra bits, set it up, and completed a bunch of foothab. Knock on wood, my foot doesn't seem worse than usual.

'Bent is waiting to hear from his brother's family in Yellowknife so they can light Chanukah candles together over Facetime. He and his Mom did that last night. She used to hate computers but she's coming around!

Nice mid-day ski in Palgrave West with 'Bent. Cool that I've skied over 4 hours this week without starting my car or crossing a road! We spent part of the time exploring an area near Duffy's Lane that we seldom visit - good ski-whacking and Snowgaine training, better for snowshoes than skis but loads of fun. 'Bent didn't have time to stop on one narrow downhill and had a great wipeout when he got tangled in shrubbery. The tracks I broke yesterday were fast and fun although some grass is peeking through in the sunnier areas. We need more snow!

When we got back, I took BazingaDog out on leash, and he tried to kill me. Well, not really but he got excited and sprinted away, yanking my shoulder, cracking my neck and back and leaving me face down in the snow. I lay there for about 20 seconds, then dragged myself up so I could catch the little bugger and get him back inside since he can't be trusted off leash. Ouch. I think a fenced yard is in our future, much as I don't want one.

Happy Birthday, 'Bent! I got you exactly what you asked for. :)

Happy Thanksgiving also to my American friends.

My lousy sleep was due in part to GuestRottweiler's early departure. We'll miss her cuddles and 1-year-old goofiness.

I'm pretty sure she felt at home here.

BulletDog and I went for a longer Tour de Palgrave West in brilliant sunshine. Most of this was trail breaking in fluffy snow but I mixed in some ski-whacking and fallen tree scrambling as necessary. I removed a bunch of big sticks from the trails, about half of which were placed on my ski tracks by BulletDog who thought it was funny. Because the base isn't frozen yet, I accumulated icy bricks on the bottoms of my skis whenever I passed through wetlands or sunny fields. But the forest trails were absolutely magic.

BulletDog will be 11 in early January so she takes her recovery a little more seriously than she used to. :)

Too much grass poking through the snow today so it was back to the trainer. In honour of the Adventure Racing World Champs starting in a few days, I re-watched Raid The North Extreme Haida Gwaii / Prince Rupert from 2007. It was a great reminder of how intensely teams will hate the inflatable Tomcat kayaks at ARWC! Nice to see friends who did RTNX 2007 and look at the spectacular scenery. Poor Bender - his team sure had rough luck.

XC Skiing - Skate 5:00 [4] 0.52 km (6.2 kph)
slept:6.75

Snow has been getting thinner on the trails so I took a page out of Coach LD's book and tried to make a skate track in our snowy yard. Fail! Too warm - snow was like oatmeal. I felt a twinge in my heel so maybe skate skiing isn't going to work just yet. It may just have been my crappy technique though so I'll try it again.

Strength & Mobility (Physio) 20:00 [1]

New exercises are added each week so it's over 30 minutes a day now but I don't feel right logging it all. I'm being really, really diligent. I want so much to fix this thing and get back to normal!

Week 4 at the clinic in Orillia. I'm gaining some mobility and strength in various parts of my body. Some of the foot exercises are so strange! It's cool to discover there are muscles in my body that my brain has to be trained to control.

O Cup #1 - The Kickoff at Glen Haffy Conservation Area. Last night's blizzard was scary when I was driving to the airport but this morning, it gave us perfect winter orienteering conditions to start the O Cup season. Deep, fluffy snow and brilliant sunshine - my favourite.

I didn't run, as per doctor's orders, so this was the first O Cup course in a decade that I've done as a fast hike. I was worried about finishing within the 90 minute time limit but it wasn't bad at all. With all the snow, it was a ton of work even to speed-hike up and down Glen Haffy's hills. It turned out to be lots of fun to bash around in the woods without running, even though I'd worried it wouldn't be.

Great to see lots of AR and O friends, and a group of us enjoyed a nice brunch at the Market Hill Cafe afterward. 'Bent probably had the coolest choices - lobster omelette followed by chocolate potato pie!

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 1:26:35 [3] 7.86 km (5.4 kph) +148m

Yahooooooo!!!! After hiking around the snowy woods with a map this morning, we got out our rock skis for a tour of Palgrave West. 'Bent and I did a loop with BulletDog and GuestRottweiler, the two dogs who can be trusted off leash. Then I headed over to K-Bash and Wheelie Woods to explore while 'Bent and BazingaDog went skijoring. The pace was slow because I removed a lot of branches from the trail as I went along.

It was spectacular - amazing conditions for the first ski of the year. It's hard to find words to explain how incredibly happy and free this ski made me feel. I've done a lot of compromising lately, doing "second choice" activities and wishing I could run. But today was as good as it gets. :)

Road Biking (Trainer) 30:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @3)

This was supposed to be a recovery ride to loosen up my legs after yesterday's strength workout. I'm feeling upper hammies and lower glutes today so apparently there was some exercise that hit muscles I usually miss. I ended up doing a pyramid while listening to a podcast so it wasn't quite as easy as it probably should have been. Muscles are still stiff.

Today's training is all indoors while the guest Rottweiler gets used to being here. No accidents yet today but last night after I'd gone to bed, I had to get up and clean up a spectacular mess. Poor doggie - she's confused about where she is and where her family has gone.

If you follow 'Bent's log, then you've seen photos of his recent adventures working at a volunteer dental mission in Belize. If not, here are a few of my faves. In 4 days, 4 dentists each worked 40 hours, collectively saw 50-60 patients a day, treated over 2,000 teeth and extracted 90 teeth in a temporary clinic set up in a village church with very basic equipment and full sterilization.

Patients - including solo children - would ride the bus for hours to get there, then wait for hours more. 'Bent says they were all grateful and cooperative. He has always wanted to go on a volunteer mission but most dental missions do a lot of extractions, which 'Bent doesn't enjoy and feels bad about since that is seldom the best thing for the patient. From seeing his smile in the photos, I suspect this is going to become a regular thing! :)

P.S. Yes, he uses a BentBlaster for dentistry. Even in Canada.

Strength & Mobility 1:00:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (15:00 @3)

A mash-up of Carbon's Offset's ski conditioning session and my physio exercises. I like the ski workout! The two-footed jumps felt like I was disobeying doctor's orders though, so I stopped after a few. Burpees didn't work well with 3 dogs in the room including our young guest Rottweiler, who got confused and peed on two different carpets. Not surprisingly, dinner was late.
10 AM

Strength & Mobility (Logging) 1:00:00 [2]
slept:5.5

In 'Bent's absence, I took over logging duties and moved a bunch of the wood from our big ex-tree. It was like working in the Khumbu Ice Fall since some pieces of the trunk weigh more than I do, and every time I moved a log, other pieces of wood tumbled and rearranged themselves. When I started, some of the largest wood chunks were waist-high in the pile so I cautiously instigated "controlled explosions" to knock things down. After all the careful work to rehabilitate my gimpy foot, it would suck for it to get crushed so I did a little tap dancing to get out of harm's way. If one of the big pieces had landed on me, it could have been awhile before anyone came along to lift the darned thing off. So this was a wild, reckless adventure - by homeowner standards.

I started the day with a 1-hour dog hike on a big fenced property with an extra Retriever so the pooches are fast asleep. They'd better rest up because a guest Rottweiler is arriving shortly.

Physio - One thing that's new to me (and would drive Coach LD nuts!) is the idea of doing certain exercises only on one side. The kinesiologist says that we aim to achieve balance and symmetry first, then we aim to strengthen both sides. So if my right side gets a passing grade, then I only work on the left side until it catches up.

Since I couldn't run on "Hug a Runner Day", I did an easy trainer ride and re-watched The Perfect Runner. Physio with some extras.

Today was my 3rd of 7 scheduled weekly appointments at the clinic in Orillia. At each visit, Dr. Bell spends 15 minutes doing chiropractic work on my legs and hips, and the kinesiologist spends a little longer reviewing my exercises, making changes based on what she sees, and giving me the next exercises in the program.

I'm starting to get a sense of how it's all going to come together. The reason I'm not supposed to run has little to do with the status of my injury, which is rarely discussed (and isn't bad). They simply don't want me to run until my biomechanics, strength and mobility have been changed sufficiently. The cool thing is that I can see changes happening, e.g. when the kinesiologist measures the distance of my knee from the wall for a particular stretch, and it's getting closer every week.

Interesting fact learned today: 85% of the patients at this clinic come from outside Orillia - usually people like me who show up with "interesting" problems.

Turns out I broke the rules again yesterday, albeit inadvertently. I'm allowed to hike so I assumed a fast treadmill walk at 15 degrees would be OK but apparently not. (Doh!) I'm only allowed 10 degrees because my current level of mobility will force me to go out of proper alignment to accommodate the slope. Darn. So I went for a plain old hike around the Charlevoix trail with the dogs as the sun set. Not loggable training but wonderful for the soul.

With high winds forecast for last night, I'd made preparations for a power outage - filled drinking water containers (we lose our running water), charged my phone, etc.

The storm lived up to predictions but we started with a brown-out instead of a blackout. I like blackouts better! I had to run around at 1:30 a.m. unplugging electronics since I wasn't sure what the weird partial power might do to them. They certainly weren't working. Through the night, we alternated between brown-out and blackout. During the brown-outs, a beeping smoke detector outside our bedroom kept me informed of the current status.

Bottom line... another "excellent" sleep!

Note

'Bent and I had to say a sad farewell last week. If you've been to our home, you've probably seen the beautiful white pine in our back yard. If you look hard, you can see a Tree Hugger in the first photo. :) That's exactly how we felt about this grand old tree.

The tree was elderly when we moved here 15 years ago but we worked with our arborist to extend its life by securing branches to the trunk with cables, installing a lightning rod and balancing its weight after branches fell off. It developed a vertical crack down the length of its trunk so you could see right through it at the right angle but we knew it provided habitat for animals so we kept maintaining it.

At the ripe old age of 150 (or so) this year, it dropped 3 huge branches in six weeks, all on days with no wind. Each branch weighed considerably more than an average tree.

We couldn't risk killing someone in our yard. It broke our hearts but the tree had to come down. Last week it happened.

We'll be burning its firewood for the next few years and hopefully making a table from some of the wood. But I'll really miss seeing it outside our bedroom window every morning, looking different in every season. Sunrise, sunset. :(

Just a little test to see how it feels to walk quickly on the treadmill with the elevation set at 15 degrees. This is how Charlotte Vasarhelyi learned her very fast uphill ultrarun-walk technique. As boring as it is, it is something I am allowed to do, and it felt relatively transferable to running - awesome.

Myka made an expedition north to explore more of Palgrave Forest and Wildlife Area. She was interested in seeing the Charlevoix Loop so we headed there first. With all the leaves down on the trail, it was hard to know what was coming up.

Then we headed into Palgrave East. We came out at a trail junction, and I pulled aside when I saw a faster rider approaching. It turned out to be Coach LD! Nice to see her and great to have so much excellent company for a ride in my back yard. Also, I didn't try to kill myself this time. My spine is still hurting from Thursday's crash. When we went by the same spot today, I realized that my back probably landed on a log, and my iPhone "cushioned" that blow. No wonder it's sore!

I'd promised Myka a latte and snack but we were sad to find the Palgrave Cafe closed early so we had to settle for a chocolate milk break inside the variety store. Not exactly the same experience but it still tasted good.

The forest was beautiful, trails were in great shape, and it was just nice to spend time playing in the woods with friends.

And... it's just like an adventure race. 'Bent's airplane flatted in Chicago so now it's unclear whether he'll catch up with the main peleton of dentists in Houston as they head to Belize to do volunteer dentistry. Storm clouds are approaching along the flight path, and his gear box (filled with expensive dental equipment and supplies, not to mention clothes) may not get delivered to the next TA in time. The current flight tracker estimate gives him 30 minutes in Houston from landing to departure with a terminal change. Once in Belize, the dentists will be transported 90 minutes by bus to a small town so if he arrives late, things get complicated. Stay tuned...

Tonight, while in mid-conversation with the instructor and her male Raid The Hammer teammate, I accidentally pulled off my capri tights along with my pants. One advantage of being grown-ups is that we all thought it was equally funny. Didn't stop me from turning a lovely shade of rouge though.

Mountain Biking (Single Track) 1:00:57 intensity: (30:57 @2) + (30:00 @3) 11.6 km (11.4 kph) +181m

Tour de Palgrave East in sunshine with a chill in the air and a skiff of snow on the north facing hillsides. The frozen trails were in great shape - lots of fun.

Until... (minor chord) I came around a bend and started climbing steeply on a sidehill trail bathed in warm, late afternoon sunlight. The frozen surface I'd been riding on turned to mucky soup in an instant. I tried a little too long to power up the hill on my semi-slick tires, and it was too late to save myself. After spinning my legs wildly like the cartoon Road Runner, I plunged sideways off the "cliff" like Wile E. Coyote.

The worst part was the 2 seconds of anticipation as the bike tipped off the trail and down the slope. "Which body parts will take the brunt of the landing? My head has the longest distance to go before it hits the ground - unless one of those trees breaks my fall. And maybe a bone. Hmm..."

Then ***CRASH*** and I lay upside down on the hillside for 30 seconds while I assessed the damage. My first move was to pause my Ambit so I obviously wasn't *too* injured. I'd cranked my bad shoulder and banged the outside of my right calf on something hard, but mostly it felt like I'd landed on two vertebrae in the middle of my back. They were sharply painful as I rode toward home, and I wondered what a cracked vertebra feels like. Surely more painful than this...? I suddenly realized that my spine probably landed on the sharp edge of my iPhone's Lifeproof case, which was in the back pocket of my cycling vest to help keep me *safe* in the forest by myself. Turns out I've got blood and scrapes back there to explain the localized pain. So I guess I'll brave tonight's core and yoga class without fear of paralysis.

Totally surreal. I can't stop myself from checking in periodically to watch the train wreck at today's special City Council debate in Canada's largest city. The Fords continue to inhabit their own alien planet.

In a short time this morning, Rob admitted to purchasing illegal drugs in the past 2 years (while Mayor) and physically intimidated another Councillor (video posted at The Globe), then refused to apologize as requested by the Speaker - until he uttered the words "I'm sorry" by accident, probably intending a different context. And that's only a couple of snippets.

Live coverage continues at 2 p.m. It is mind blowing and depressing that citizens have no way to remove a ticking time bomb from office so that Council can get on with managing the city. I suspect the explosion will come soon though. A judge has just ordered that more evidence from the police investigation be released to the public.

Strength & Mobility (Lower body) 20:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (10:00 @2)

Physio program aimed at correcting gait, improving balance, and increasing mobility in feet and hips.

My cold improved a lot today. If I can get a decent sleep, I should be OK for moderate intensity tomorrow. I have fallen *way* off the sleep wagon after a couple of good weeks. I'm down to 6.8 hrs/night average over the past week. My goal (at least to start) was 7.5 hrs/night, which may not seem ambitious but for me, it is. I was there for awhile so it *can* be done.

Great to see several friends at today's Salomon Store Friends and Family sale. Boy, was it busy in there!

Note

Here's an example of why I enjoy reading Blair Trewin's log (blairtrewin), even though I don't know him. He's an Australian meteorologist and climate change expert. In case you haven't read it, "The Australian" is a conservative-leaning newspaper.

The Australian is in fine form, publishing an opinion piece on the alleged non-existence of climate change by a professor at the University of Queensland - a professor of gastroenterology whose specialty is irritable bowel syndrome. This is perhaps fitting as this sort of thing gives me the you-know-whats. (The equivalent would be the Australian giving me space to put my views on what causes irritable bowel syndrome, something I don't expect to happen any time soon).

Soooo... I couldn't lie to the kinesiologist or to Dr. Bell.

"Um, yes, I did run in the last 15 days - just once. How long? Uh... 2 hours. Yes, 2 hours."

I disappointed them. :(

Still no running allowed until they've had more time to fix my gait and imbalances. I've made good progress since last week but until I can do a fairly deep 1-legged squat with no support and my hip centred over my foot instead of sticking out to the side, I have no business running. I can *probably* do a 10K trail race I've been considering in December. When I'm allowed to get back into running, he'll be asking me to start with runs up to 1 hour long, and I should take advantage of that recovery phase to work on speed.

I wanted to negotiate but his walls are plastered with photos of world class athletes with personal thank you messages written on them. He seems to know what he's doing. Sigh. In the great scheme of things, this doesn't count as a *real* problem, I know.

Salomon Raid The Hammer in Oakville with Team Achilles Healing - Funderstorm and DLevine. All of us are injured. Guess where. None of us had done the Half Raid before, and our shared goal was to finish the day without aggravating our injuries too much. We won't know until tomorrow but we didn't feel too bad by the end.

I've been trying to respect doctor's orders not to run but the race started with individual 400 m loops around the school track so I figured it wouldn't kill me to jog a little bit on such a nice surface. Naturally, things degenerated from there, and we ended up running most of the flats and gentle hills, always at a manageable pace with rest breaks to keep our feet happy. This was my first attempt at running in 15 days, and it felt so nice. (Sniffle.) I sure hope that at tomorrow's appointment, it won't be too obvious that I've cheated on my doc...

The forest was beautiful and fairly open. There were some super-steep, muddy climbs where we had to grab saplings to haul ourselves up, and one descent where we used Mr. Gally's butt luge technique. DLevine was stellar in our primary navigator role while Funderstorm and I paid attention to our maps mostly because it was polite to do so, not because we needed to discuss route choices very often on the course.

It was very relaxing to have no competitive aspirations; I was just grateful to have found a couple of fun teammates who shared the same goals and concerns this time around.

The only bummer was that Funderstorm refused to perform a Taylor Swift song because there were other teams around who might hear. I'm not sure it counts as a Funderstorm racing experience with no TS tunes. However, she did provide some excellent post-race refreshments that more than made up for it.

Great to see so many friends and collect some hugs to help the healing. Congrats to all the Attackpointers who had excellent races today! Special congrats to JayXC for taking the overall win. Nice that Mr. and Mrs. Gally took 'Bent onboard when I bailed from the full Raid. Results were close at the top but they were only 20 minutes back from the overall winners.

Big thanks to Pat-hectic, Dana and Runit for their work on the race course. Hope to see a lot of Raid racers at the O Cup Kick-Off on Sunday Nov. 24 at Glen Haffy! I will plan a post-race lunch location.

Dog hiking, wood hauling, not really training. My heel is hurting from the physio stretches. Blah.

The lottery opened today for the 2014 Western States Endurance Run. Being injured makes it easier to stick to my plan not to put my name in but there's always a wee bit of regret about "sensible" decisions. http://www.wser.org/lottery/

Busy till dark so back on the trainer again. Today it was RIDES 2: Las Vegas, Valley of Fire. More fun than Coach Troy although it's still a trainer ride so hard to get excited about.

My right knee was stiff all day. It's been behaving well for several years but it's been my bad knee in the past. Just what I need right now... another malfunctioning body part. If my shoulder finally gives out, it will probably be time to shoot me.

It's possible that the first trainer session of the winter gave my knee grief but I suspect the pigeon pose in last night's yoga class may be the culprit. I always try to be cautious on the right side but I know it's risky. Anyway, today's trainer ride neither fixed it nor made it worse.

Trails were too wet to ride so I couldn't postpone setting up my trainer any longer. The sad truth is that poor Princess didn't get outside at all this year; I'm just not much of a road rider. I kicked off trainer season with some classic Coach Troy: Spinervals 1.0 No Slackers Allowed. Lots of sweat but my cold wasn't bothering me too much so hopefully I'm on the upswing!

Tonight's class was even more strength-oriented than usual. I may be imagining it but I thought that the two sides of my body might be in better balance after all the adjustments on Monday, and my lower back wasn't as tight as usual.

It's not uncommon for a dog or two to attend our yoga class, and tonight's dog was doing really well until we all did tiger pose, then she started howling softly - probably totally confused at this pack of crazy humans!

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour trailer has been released! This always gives me itchy feet. (I watched it a bunch of times over the weekend so my feet really itch right now.) Our Tree Hugger teammate Logan Tacoma appears at 6:40.

Just heard that the annual Salomon Friends and Family VIP Day at the Salomon Toronto store will be this coming Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It's a private sale that offers 40% off Salomon clothing and shoes, and there are usually good discounts on Suunto products too. I'm putting together an e-mail to friends who live in the area and might be interested but I'm guaranteed to forget a few people since this stupid cold is messing with my brain. If you are interested and able to go, please e-mail me to ensure you get an invitation with instructions on how to get your name added to the store's VIP list.

Fairly hard paddle while listening to an old "Q" podcast. Debate du jour: Is "benevolent sexism" (e.g. "chivalry") OK, or does it tend to lead to "hostile sexism"? Still fighting the cold but didn't feel nearly as awful as yesterday.

Some products aren't easy to advertise but the writer of this ad gets extra points for creativity. The British accent helps too. It's been around for a couple of months so you may have seen it already.

My AP log received its 200,000th visit over the weekend. Mind boggling! Thanks so much for stopping by and for joining in the conversation here occasionally. Whether or not we've met in in real life, we share a bond and I'm glad you're here. Attackpoint is full of fun, interesting, generous people; what an amazing community Ken has established!

Power Yoga 30:00 [1]

Yoga + some extra core and foothab. With my cold, it feels rotten to be anything other than vertical, and it doesn't feel good if my heart rate goes up even a little. Blah.

After a nice visit with Goose when he dropped off our canoe, BulletDog and I went for a gentle hike to see the 12 trees that have fallen across the 200 m stretch of trail that leads into the Palgrave West conservation land. I did some clean-up of branches but what we really need is someone with a chainsaw hobby. Too bad this windstorm happened the day *after* Hallowe'en.

Interesting, detailed assessment and treatment with Dr. Bell yesterday. A few highlights:

- I run mostly with my left leg - the bad one. Guess why it got bad. My right glute is much less functional than my left (something I'd noticed), and some of this is due to lack of mobility around the hips and lower back. This was one of several things he was able to start improving right away with a few adjustments and tests.

- I run on the lateral (outside) edge of my left foot rather than pushing off hard with my big toe. This is related to my recurrent ankle sprains - a chicken and egg thing but at this point, I'm always close to turning that ankle because my weight is shifted in that direction. I'd brought a pair of shoes that I'd only run 200 km in, but he showed me how my left shoe looks different from my right shoe as a result of my gait.

- I was only there to ask about my foot but when he followed the chain of tightness and imbalances up through my body, they led to my bad right shoulder, which I had not considered might be connected. He found several places with lack of mobility or imbalances, with my bad foot being a small piece of the puzzle.

- The pain that had brought me in was a minor part of the discussion. Dr. Bell doesn't see me as having serious Achilles trouble and says that nearly everyone has a Haglund's deformity so don't worry about it. The retrocalcaneal bursa may be what is causing the pain. In any case, he's keen to get me back doing squats and other strength exercises that stretch the heel - things I've been avoiding. He says my problems aren't too severe and that 'Bent was in a worse state at his first appointment.

- His focus is on making me a better and more competitive runner - something I was not asking for nor even thinking about. When the pain got really bad in late September, I began to think that my running days might be over but I'd be happy just to have the ability to hike when I get old. I was hoping I hadn't screwed myself up too badly already. But Dr. Bell's goal is to improve my running style and efficiency with the side effect of getting rid of the pain. He brushed off my comments about being a slow runner with good endurance. "If we can address these problems, you will get faster." I'll just be happy if I can run long distances pain-free. Who knows what will really happen but I feel like he's part coach, part healthcare professional.

Bottom line... I'm supposed to take another week off running, then check in with him again to see how the various adjustments have been working. I'm allowed to do everything else, including hiking. (Raid The Hammer is like a fast hike, right?) The kinesiologist gave me some intro exercises, then I'll have 6 weekly sessions with her.

Cautious optimism. :)

Long awaited running/injury assessment with Dr. Larry Bell in Orillia today. A little worried about what I might hear but whatever will be, will be.

Sore throat and low energy today. I guess it was bound to happen after riding airplanes and sitting near crowds of people in theatres for 4 days.

The Carbons and I climbed a mountain with Conrad Anker in blizzard conditions before sunrise. True story!

For those who aren't into mountaineering, this is like playing pick-up road hockey with Wayne Gretzky - or shooting a few hoops behind a school with Michael Jordan.

Extra points because the expedition started inside the nice, warm Banff Centre with a cup of free trade organic Kicking Horse coffee.

Then we headed up the snowy tourist trail and made our siege on Tunnel Mountain.

The lights of Banff were twinkling below.

We got past the crux and reached the summit ridge at first light.

Conrad is known as a talented, versatile mountaineer, and he was kind enough to share one of his gear secrets - a coffee thermos you can sip from as you climb.

Naturally, we had to get summit photos with Conrad.

We weren't the only ones to think of this!

We had to make good time down the mountain to get seats for the films. I've been trying not to run this week but hopefully it won't hurt if I cheat a little. We chatted with a couple of people from True Outdoors who know Urthbuoy.

Today's other highlight (outside of the films) was an all-day snowstorm that hasn't stopped yet. Winter has arrived in Banff!
