Control clearing/setup 20:00 [3]
shoes: Inov 340 Pair #1

Pulled a few controls from Ransberg. Very peaceful.

My sincere thanks to Mike, Pat, Matthew and Dave for helping me with the steep learning curve over the past few months.

Orienteering race 45:23 [4] *** 5.05 km (8:59 / km) +169m 7:42 / km
17c shoes: Inov 340 Pair #1

A fun blend of problems from flyingsquirrel and benjaminhart. Open and faster at the beginning, really steep in the middle (in other terms, getting out of a couple of re-entrants was third-class climbing while running), and then a straightforward ending (thank goodness for this because I was sucking wind on the hill to the go control). Navigationally, my day was better than typical with only one full-on error (crossing too low over the spur to the re-entrant before 8?), but there was a bit too much veering off line and tentativeness near the controls. It was a good race, great weather, and a truly spectacular ride through the pine trees to the finish (both as a spectator and competitor).

shoes: Salomon Speedcross

Block vetting and final half dozen controls for the long. Thanks to the help of Jerry, Jim, Brenda, and Aidan, we visited every control by 12 minutes to the start of the race and the one faulty SI unit replaced in time.

I had no real idea of what to expect having spent shockingly little time at IUB over the past 8 yrs in Indiana. Much more layered with small uncrossable walls and gardens required some concentration to not miss the fair passages. Even though I tried to reload with food, hydration and a shower after placing controls with Pat for the Saturday long, my legs were empty at the start, so the speed was not what I would have liked. Made two significant errors during my oxygen-starved phase (one 90 degree error and a second lack-of-trust-error fumbling about at the entrance an alcove). Chalk one up for Mike; very nicely done map!

Blustery day for 44 degrees. Today was just a quick loop to NorthCentral and home. Tomorrow, the temperature will start its ascent to 65 on sunny Saturday (knock on wood).
