Blue course at McKeldin: Course got shorter than advertised but still had a lot of climb.
I let Joe start ahead of me (I didn't want him following me the whole course :). Actually I didn't want him to pass me on the way to #2.
#1:Down the hill to road in whatever was best route. I drifted left so have to correct after cross road. Went to cliff but it wasn't what I was expecting tucked into a slot.
#2: went straight. I hid the ditch low and had to climb back up.
#3: Angled down to the trail in the flat area. Ran the trail around. I didn't see the rock or control so kept going. When I hit the real rock area there was no control. I flounded for awhile then using the contours ran back to the center of the circle. When I go to the control there was barely any rock there. I don't think the stony ground was the correct control description.
#4: up the trail, cross the stream then to the control.
#5: Took the trail around. no problems.
#6: Back to the trail, cross the road and uphill to the depression. no time lost but getting a little slower.
#7: Ran what use to be the old trail along the stream and cut up to the control. No time lost.
#8: Up the hill. Ugghh is this steep. By the time I got to the trail I wasn't able run. Ran the trail to the reentrant bottom then up tot he control.
#9: Angled over to the trail and to the control. No time lost.
#10: Trail and cut over to control. Few seconds lost looking for control once I get to the cliff.
#11: There were people on the trail so I went straight through the woods. There was extra green in the area. I went to first green and no control. Went a little further and saw it.
#12: I started heading to 21 as that is where the line went. Fortunately I didn't get far before I realized it was the wrong control. Back to 11, cut down to the trail, along the trail and cut in when I could see the big cliff on the hillside. Slogged up the hill. No problems.
#13: Along the side of the hill. Slow going but no problem.
#14: Went straight and dropped right into the control. Side hill running is still slow.
#15: Thought about taking the low river trail but thought it was to far distance way and yo u still had to climb in the end. Instead I climbed and took the right route by the parking lots and #16. Slow on the climbs but clean. By now my mask was soaking wet and I had to keep putting it over my mouth because of all the people on the trails. My mask was so wet and heavy it wouldn't stay up and kept slipping down. I had to run on the trails holding it in place. Unfortunately many of the other people on the trails weren't wearing masks as all. Went right through the green to the control. More climb to get up here.
#16: Right back the way I came. Dogleg. No problems.
#17: Back to the trail.. cut off trail to control. Other than having to wait for some kids to leave the control, no problems.
#18: Straight. No problem other than more climb.
#19: Straight. Couldn't tell where the dark green and light green was. I had to hesitate for awhile and cut bac a little to it.
#20: I decided to take the left route via the park entrance. Long run and I was tired but no problems.
#21: Straight. no problem
#22: Back by #11, up reentrant. There was another rootstock lower down that I went to. No control. The root stock in the ditch didn't look that big since it was in the ditch.
#23: Straight.
Fin: There were orienteers on the trail in front of me. First slowed me down then I ran in the grass to get around them. Still not fast.
Overall: more like a long sprint with a few long legs and a ton of climb.
