Orienteering long (stumble long) 2:31:57 [3] ** 14.3 km (10:38 / km)
ahr:145 max:166 shoes: Falcons 2018

I haven't been doing much training because of injuries. A week ago I got a bad cold and also pulled a lower back muscle. I contemplated skipping this event or doing the short, but since this is the STUMBLE I had to try for the long. So here I am with still slightly sore back and still slightly congested.
My overall goal was simply to finish. Go out easy, run easy, and finish walking.

I agreed with Peggy at the start to keep my feet dry in the first window. It meant a dogleg but was worth it. Plan was to go A, C, B, E, D (then back to E).

At the start I made sure I didn't start out to fast. I jogged across the field and tried to make sure I was I was navigating correctly and not just following the crowd. Faster people ran ahead of me which was ok with me. I made up some ground as some people swung right across the field. Punched A in the crowd and then left the crowd to go to C. On the Way to C I just behind the leaders who already had gone to B. I was slow to B as the control was farther down than I expected. Followed the reverse flow of people back to B. B was all wet and muddy. I got my feed muddy but stayed dry. Now on my own across the bridge and over to E. Going to D I was going opposite the people again. When I got the D I could see that I wasn't to far back from where I expected to be. Ran back to E.
Leaving E, on the trail I was just behind Vido and Diana. I was planning ahead and wasn't paying attention. I left the trail too soon but corrected quickly. I cut over the indistinct trail and passed Vido/Diana who hesitated. Angelica was looking way short so I passed her as well. I cut into a little soon and had to run up the reentrant. Dave Onkst behind me yells out that Ted is heading to the control. When I get to the control the groups I will see much of the rest of the course is there. It consisted of Dave Onkst, Nadim Ahmed, Angelica Riley, Michael Stasiowski, Victor Frolenko plus some others.
Going to 7 I cut in to early and had to cross the first rentrant then run up the second. I was behind the group at this point. I walked out the main trail where is was evident they were taking the road run. I decided going straight and saving distance was more important. Had I been shape I would have taken the road also. Vido also went straight but he drifted right to while I intentiallly went left to avoid the ditches. I kept moving but was slow reading the map. I got to the control by myself. Leaving the control I found the group running in. (score one for Ted).
I decided on window as GHIJF. There wasn't any other option. On the road run to G, I could hear the group gaining on me. I walked part of the uphill to save energy (ok, I was already tired). They all should have passed me but didn't. I was first of the group to G. I went left to avoid some of the steep gully where they went more right. First to H. First to I. First to J but everyone is right behind me. Leaving J I was thinking I was I was leaving F and started off the wrong way. Someone yelled my name (turned out to be Nadim) and I reallized my mistake and corrected. Now I was following the group I got a chance to see what was what. They were all moving faster than I was but didn't appear to be reading the map details. Most looked to just be blindly following whoever was in front of them. I was still at the end of the group and barely staying with them as we went to F and 15.
Taking the trail leaving 15, I was in the back and falling behind. ON the trail they were moving faster. When we got close to the field I opted to take it rather than the trail. The field had a little overgrown stuff but still easy to run. I hit the road ahead of the group (except Victor who was just ahead of me. Victor stayed right where I went up the straight line reentrant. He cut back right and was still just ahead of me at the stream crossing. We both had trouble getting out of the stream bed and I got ahead of him. I don't know why everyone else hadn't passed us both. Got the control just ahead of the group again.
leaving 16, Straight out to the road. Order: LMPKON. Led the group to L, M,. Passed some Short Stumble people going to P. Led group to K. Passed someone on the way to O. Led group to N.
Going to 23, I left along the hill side. Led group to 23 and 24. I got alittle ahead of group at 25 but they caught back up when I walked up the hill.
Going by the finish, I figured this would be the food stop. I was surprised there wasn't anything there. There is always a food stop and I was depending on getting some sugar into me. I ran to the finish and there wasn't any food or drink there. I was offered hot water or cold water but no refreshments, No cookies, no gatorade, no nothing. I had a gel and a cup of water. By the time I got on the course again the group was gone. I figured I could reel them back in with my navigation but once I started running again I couldn't. I really needed the refreshments.
Ran Road to #27. Then did RSQUT which would put me on a road run to 33. caught part way up to the group at Q (I saw them leaving the control area but I overshot it a little and lost the ground again. I didn't see on on the road to 33 which means they had a good lead on me. My thighs were starting to cramps at this point so mostly walking now. By myself going to 34.
Order: XZWYV. I decided this order would be slightly shorter and since I walking by now that is all that mattered. Had I still been running I would do it in YXZWV. I got to X at the same time as Dave Onkst. He thought I had caught back up but I told him I was a control behind. by myself through V.
On the way to 40 Tom Nolan and Victor Lin passed me. They climbed leaving 40 and I went along the marsh. I got ahead of Victor again but he passed me on the final run in.
The course was navigationally easy and the windows didn't have much options in them. I was happy that the woods were open and not much climb. That is all that saved me so I could finish with cramping.
