Orienteering 38:30 intensity: (18:40 @0) + (17:52 @1) + (1:58 @2) 2.64 mi (14:34 / mi) +99m 13:03 / mi

Map Hike with Luke at Emery Park, before the Bills game. We visited about 9 controls, but couldn't find the first tag (#1), nor the last (near the tennis courts). For #1, we were in the right spot compared to the vegetation, but it may have crept and the tag may have been closer to the lot. For the last, we were in a hurry a didn't use enough care (I didn't have a compass), but I thought the root stock should have been easy to see.

Running 13:46 intensity: (3:30 @0) + (6:35 @1) + (3:32 @2) + (9 @3) 1.73 mi (7:57 / mi) +2m 7:55 / mi
ahr:81 max:149

Jogging around the VVS Invitational. Went over early to catch the first two girls races, featuring F-M and North Shore, and get a feel for spectating for the later races.

Running 31:11 intensity: (18:00 @0) + (10:48 @1) + (2:11 @2) + (12 @3) 3.67 mi (8:29 / mi) +4m 8:28 / mi
ahr:76 max:145

More jogging around, spectating during some of the mid-day races at the VVS Invite. This included the Mendon girls race, the McQuaid boys, and others.

Running 20:06 intensity: (6:30 @0) + (7:21 @1) + (4:18 @2) + (1:57 @3) 2.35 mi (8:33 / mi) +3m 8:31 / mi
ahr:79 max:154

More running around at VVS. This segment includes a little more vigor, since the first part of this is during our girls race. And what a race! After touring the course yesterday, I knew that this was a course that would sneak up on people and we'd see some serious fading. This was confirmed in the morning, when even the best runners slowed 30 seconds on the second mile, then even more in the third. So, our girls went out conservatively (Val and Amanda 6:02, the others 6:39-6:48). By the mile, Val and Amanda had worked their way up to about 7th and 8th, then they started to go to work. They had moved into 3-4 by the two mile and were gaining ground on the leaders. Went they came back into view at about 2.5, they were about to pass 2nd place, and then went hard after the final rise and Val won comfortably, with Amanda just missing 2nd. Meanwhile, Alaina and Sarah, especially, had moved well up the pack. In the end, our girls were rewarded a trophy for 3rd place, behind two highly-regarded teams (R-H and Guilderland).

Running 8:28 intensity: (6:08 @1) + (2:20 @2) 0.9 mi (9:27 / mi) +4m 9:19 / mi
ahr:92 max:139

Last bit of running around at VVS, during our boys race. Another fine team performance, as the guys took the same approach as the girls and gradually moved up thru the field, to grab a surprising 4th place. Most of the race, it looked like they were headed for Noah's ark, with Will & Justin, Alex & John, Tristan & Ethan, and Zach & Kevin running in pairs for various amounts of time.

Orienteering 15:43 [2] *** 1.7 km (9:15 / km)
spiked:10/10c

Set the flags for the orienteering course for Josie's group, at Webster Park.
4 PM

Running 20:00 [3] 2.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

Running around during the team's warm-up, then running around to time the 6 x 1/2 miles they did on the course. The first half was to long, stopping right before the big downhill. The third half was OK, stopping at the last of the stretch of pines a bit before the turn after the rollers. The fifth half stopped at the big tree at the bottom of the hill, which was a good place for it.

Orienteering 18:00 [2] 2.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Flag pick-up. 2 flags were missing and a third had been relocated. No doubt that this was done by middle school XC runners, given the timeframe and the location of the flags. I didn't have time to search much for the two missing - I hope they turn up. The Thomas coach will check with the Willink kids tomorrow. I think they were too far away for the Spry kids ;-).

Running 21:22 [2] 2.44 mi (8:45 / mi)

Easy running around Webster Park during practice, before and after I pre-jogged the O course.

Orienteering 13:38 [2] *** 1.7 km (8:01 / km)
spiked:10/10c

Checked out the O course for the Xerox group tomorrow. It's a progressive course going from very White to Yellow-ish, so that people can bail when they want.

Running 14:57 intensity: (6:15 @1) + (6:20 @2) + (2:22 @3) 1.37 mi (10:56 / mi) +5m 10:49 / mi
ahr:92 max:137

Running around during the boys race at Basil Marella Park. Legs still a little sore from Sunday, so I stayed cautious with moving around.

Boys didn't do quite as well as expected, but still comfortably won all three meets. And yesterday's run was on the longer side.

Running 24:23 intensity: (6:03 @1) + (12:02 @2) + (6:18 @3) 2.0 mi (12:10 / mi) +4m 12:06 / mi
ahr:96 max:145

Running around during the girls race. This time Luke and I cut through the woods for some terrain training, to see the race at a remote spot on the first loop. Thought about going back, but would likely have missed the finish, so we just headed back.

The girls had a solid race. It was the smallest league race I've ever seen, with only 20 girls (13 from Schroeder, 7 from the other 3 teams). Val tied for the 25th best time on the course since 2005, but doesn't show on the list, presumably because ties appear to be broken alphabetically, so Atkins gets ahead of Palermo :-(

Running 12:00 [1] 1.2 mi (10:00 / mi)

Walked around Webster Park for about 45 minutes during practice, checking out options for an orienteering course for a friend's group at Xerox - did some jogging periodically.
