Running long 1:33:17 [2] 10.73 mi (8:42 / mi)

If I had to miss the second ROC series race (and then the Runnin' Cadet Classic), this is the way to miss it! A sweet run on Hilton Head Island. I didn't look at a map ahead of time, so I headed north (which turned out to be as much east as north), parallel to the beach, but it dead-ended. I wasn't ready to hop on the beach, so I just went with the trails along Pope and Hilton Parkway, until it was time to turn around, then a bit on the beach on the way in.

I think gmap underestimated the distance because the paths twist and turn, but no by much because I had a couple of late, measured miles that were 8:34 and 8:38. The weather was warm, but not brutal, and the trails are mostly shaded.

Had I seen the maps they have scattered about, there would have been a nice loop option up the Parkway a couple miles farther, then back on the beach. I most note that the beach is most excellent for running (well, except when the tide is at its very highest) because of the smooth, relatively firm surface where the tide hits and retreats. Not like I imagine beach running. Biking on the beach is quite popular, if you can imagine that.

Saw a couple of dolphins, a bird with a curvy neck that was standing next to a fisherman's [bait?] box, amongst a few people, and oodles of jellyfish(?) in various states of dying in the sun. Didn't see an alligator until Sunday.

Running 28:00 [2] 3.2 mi (8:45 / mi)

Short, easy run with Patty after arriving at the hotel on Hilton Head Island. This was all I had time to complete before driving to the shuttle for the trip to the Hodges, for an excellent "Celebration for Chris and Mary on the May River".

Awful - 3 snowmen on the way to a 51.

Strength 15:00 [1]

After the very nice Varsity track meet at R-H, Chris and I moved some of Meg's furniture to a storage building behind the house for Uncle Jim. Spent the better part of an hour moving stuff.

The meet was tough to score. There were 4 teams there, so 6 dual meets going on. That meant 2 heats for all laned events (4 entries per team). FAT was used, but no results were published, and the field event results were not at all timely. We knew it was close with Victor (and Irondequoit a bit), so we had to make sure we could win both the 4x4 and 4x8. We put most horsepower into the 4x4, thinking that they would be stronger there, with no sign of MJ running. JMatt, Ben and JR got a nice lead and AJ was able to coast to the win with a 60, which was good since he was doubling back in the 4x8. That still left us with Adrian, Will, Geoff and AJ in the 4x8, and AJ was again given a very nice lead, even ahead of R-H by several seconds, so he stayed ahead of Mickey without too much effort and nicely ahead of Victor. We got Victor, 72-69.

The highlight of the day was winning the 800 (AJ, with Ben 2nd), 1600 (AJ again), 3200 (Geoff with a 64 final lap and John 3rd) and 4x800 in a meet with R-H! Sure, they didn't need the points, but, for example, their top 3 came thru the 400 in 61-62 during the 1600.

Strength 6:00 [3]

Hip flexor, etc. strengthening exercises - 3 types each side.

Stretching 1:00 [3]

Just to record that I did this. Trying to focus on strength and stretching to regain some lost agility and range of motion that really limits me in the woods.

Note
(rest day)

Legs were heavy enough from the weekend that I did not want to squeeze in a run after Luke's baseball scrimmage (which came after the JV track meet in Victor). The JV meet was run very quickly, so there was no jogging to be done during that.
