Trail Running 31:00 [3]
ahr:141 max:162

Just a quick run with Erin through the woods from our back yard. Pretty interesting terrain, but very thick in places. About 90% of the run was in the woods with some trails here and there before breaking out on the road back to home.

We checkout the lake up close for the first time. We have a lot of exploring to do of our new "neighborhood".

Orienteering race 2:30:00 [3] ****

This race was going really well for the first 8 controls. Then C9 came along and it was all over. I ended up way to far left and made bad decisions that lead to a delayed relocation. It's really to bad because until that point I was having the best race I've had to date. After spending 56 mins on C9 I decided I wasn't having fun anymore and thought I'd head home. Sure I could have gone the rest of the way, but I would have been frustrated with myself the whole time and having that attitude along with the risk of injury with AR and Xterra coming up seemed not to be worth it.

I took the long way back to the finish from C9 just to get some running in on trails.

In overall conclusion for this weekend, West Point can be a humbling experience for new orienteers.

West Point Day One (Blue)

More orienteering in the rain. Started the course slow. Took a bit to get used to the slanted northing lines. The landscape was also much different then what I'm "used" to orienteering on (not like I've done a lot of orienteering). Should have taken the road to C1, instead ran the ridge before eventually cutting down. Clean but slow. Fumbled C2 a bit, area was just generally hard for me to read. C3 was a freakin disaster (24:58). C4 was no problem. C5's split wasn't great but I thought I was really clean and steady. The rest really went pretty well with a small miss on C6, trouble with fog on C9 made me miss slightly high. Found C10 beautifully but failed to read my control descrition and lost time at C being confused about where on the cliff it was. Such stupid roockie mistakes. C11 I decided to climb it out to a safe attack point but it paid off nailing the control in a solid 10:38. C12 ran to the boulder cluster just a little low of where I needed to be. C13 missed slightly left. The rest were cake.

So overall not a great run but lots of good lessons for next time. Looking forward to O'ing again.
