Green Course on a beautiful day. Started out a little late as I drove up in the morning...around 11am. I think this is a nice time to start in the future. GPS watch had died and I forgot to charge. My goal was 1:30 but I had some big mistakes.
- this was in an area we had seen in advanced training, and I had a plan on how to get there right away. End of stone wall, depression, to cliff.
- a little troublesome as there was no obvious feature to cut in from the trail to get to control, no attackpoint really. I lost a little time overthinking things but ended up getting it just fine and felt good moving along.
- back to trail, bearing from bend in trail, ended up a little too far north/right of the control but saw it out of the corner of my eye. again, feeling good moving through the forest, looking down at compass every little bit instead of trying to find trees to run to. I might like this technique better than that.
- bearing right to it, lucky we had been in the area yesterday.
- ditto
- okay what happened here? I had what i thought was a good plan but the implementation was faulty. trail bend to road to bridge but i was confused at bridge for a while - brain lapse! to rock walls and bearing in.
- along rock wall until junction, bearing to depression.
- oh thank you sandy. thank you so much. made a plan based on something we had talked about yesterday, aiming to the hook in the creek, seeing the vegetation boundary of pine trees. still, got a little off in my bearing thanks to contours, but got it okay.
- bearing to attackpoint of creek and marsh, to reentrant control.
- this was the doozy. bearing to little pond fine, but then bearing to contol (a shallow reentrant) ended up being off and I didn't recover well. flailed around in the woods not seeing anything of import. finally relocated from the stone wall (why was I so stubborn about that?)
- went right past fence control, relocated from edge of field.
- easy peasy in camp.
All in all, felt pretty good today, and was able to go faster than I normally do while navigating. This was really due to some good lessons from yesterday and caffeine. Making a plan that incorporates cutting the legs into manageable chunks is the way to go. If I hadn't made those 2 big errors I really would have smoked it (for me.) Still, I was "Top Green Lady" again. REally great bunch of people and such great terrain. I heart Hickory Run.
