Orienteering race 1:41:22 [4] 4.98 mi (20:21 / mi) +709ft 17:56 / mi
weight:113.8lbs shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3

actual time with the water stops minus'd out was 1:35:54. highlighting legs of note:

1- thought i was on first trail, end of which would have been my AP, but it turns out there was no first trail in reality, and it took me a while to notice. note to self: always go slow to the first control.

4- the LONG leg. was chugging along, doing great, thinking i might actually catch up to ron...looking at the symbols for 'tunnel' along the road and thinking i would see a tunnel, my AP to turn off road and into woods. well it was a very small tunnel, a culvert, and there are 2 on the map but 3 in real life. so when i got to the second on the map, the actual one I had planned to use, i thought i'd gone too far and went back to first. taking a bearing off the first sent me right to number 5, so i used that as an AP. i have to think that this would have been a very obvious AP for others, so i wonder if it was a problem for them, too. this is where not much experience with imperfect mapping has me at a disadvantage, i guess.

6- why was this hard? i went down what i thought was the appropriate distance contour-wise, but it wasn't there. bumbled around looking, then went farther down and there it was. not a fan of looking for manmade objects in the woods.

14- pretty tired by now, uphill not my best. thought i had taken a bearing to avoid the dark green but oops i ended up going right through it. that sucked. at 14 i had to stop and breathe and gather some strength. still not 100% after my sickness earlier this week.

the rest of the course was good navigationally but i just didn't have much energy left. 19- had seen this control on the way to #4 and made a mental note of it's location, helpful when i was tired on the way home.

all in all, not great focus and not great energy but a perfectly fine day in the woods. me and all my spiders are clean now.

I did enjoy the water stops at 8 and 17 which were "off the clock" but they were not subtracted on AP - this was a great idea to promote safe road crossing (time between 7 and 8 and 16 and 17 was subtracted in final result.) I took full advantage to take nice rests and drink water.

So I actually came in 9th and was first woman (all the women who usually beat me were not there...)

Crum / Smedley... had to walk a portion of this, just feeling really wobbly and tired and my eyes were blurring. Turned around earlier than I intended. Think it was a nutrition thing. I need to be doing more workouts on trails/grass/terrain other than streets.
