HR Green course, wow what?? I only went 4 miles? That seemed like at least 5 or more.
In general, I pointed my compass and tried very hard to stay true to its aim. For many of the legs that's all I had as a plan.
#4 I must have been off to the north and wandered around in circles for a while until another human came along and alerted me to the right direction.
Saw my pops at the control and we went to#5 together, but pulled each other in different directions and ended up searching around a bit for #5, which he found first and then lit out to leave me in the dust. Thought for sure he was minutes ahead of me for the rest of the course.
#7 Too far NE, relocated from the ditch leading ot the highway. I thought the pond would also have some clearing around it, but it was pretty tree-covered.
Finished, thinking to I'd see hughmac3, and he wasn't back for another 30 minutes, during which Rich B alerted us to the fact that he had seen Mac who was "bailing to the highway." I got worried and drove out to the road looking for him, but of course he was fine. Pissed, but fine.
It was very slow going most of the time (as you can see by my time.) "White woods" -- I think not, although Sandy F swears they are. I think if you have to crawl through little openings in the saplings and constantly brush branches out of your way (and spider webs too) it must be light green. That wasn't a surprise though, we were warned about the age of the map and the vegetation not being spot on.
And the creek crossings were marvelous. All in all, my faith in my compass was restored, I got a good workout but probably won't get many points for this one, as a lot of really good orienteers decided to do Green today.
