US Night O Champs 2017. A bit of a shaky race during the first half including several smaller glitches (CP 3 - went straight, while the trail on the right would probably have been faster; CP 5 - overran it - had not read the course notes about underground ruins and lost a minute or more; CP 6 - decided on an almost straight route through some pretty green area, instead of the probably much better road around) and a major mistake on CP 7. There I was fooled by one of the roads at the southern end of the map, which looks like a double lane road in reality but is marked as a single lane one. I got confused, thought I was further ahead along the road than I was, and turned in to look for the control way too early in some really green area. Lost some 4-5 minutes before I could correct for that mistake, having finally hit the trail/creek junction some 300 m west of the control. As always, trying to make up for the lost time I immediately made another blunder when trying to hit the passage between the two fenced-in areas. Must have just missed the opening and went all the way to the 90-degree fence corner to the west before realizing the mistake - lost another 1.5 minutes or so. Fortunately, I was able to avoid significant mistakes on the rest of the course. I did catch up Maricel (who finished second in the end) at control 17 and we were within sight until CP 19.

Happy to defend the title!
