Long Advanced in the Barrens 7.1 km 14 controls set by Bruce Benot
What was I thinking?...A "Tale of Two Cities" day!
My second long advanced...I don't really have a sense the absolute usage of the stars but I found this very difficult...
Had some terrible moments: a slow start, losing contact of the map on 3, taking a bearing south to hit the bottom trail and over shooting it way off the map and feeling so discouraged to even try for 5,6,7 or 9 when I figured out my errors.
On the other hand I did have some positive moments where every thing seemed to click (or at least click better)....found error on two quickly and then hit it right on, 3 was going well and I should have stopped when the lake was on the wrong side and I had my doubts...this would have saved me 20 minutes...but when I found where I went wrong (even though it was very late) at least I was able to determine exactly where I was and got to 4 (with some help near the end), after getting to 4 didn't bail went back to 3 and then returned to 4 to at least have the first 4 right, bailed to go to 8 which worked out well ...got into the field where Randy and another guy were struggling for 8 because none of us saw the fence...I relocated to the water hole to the west and found the control right away before them with a slow move on the bearing, 8-9 terrible as mentionned above (went off map) and was getting a bit scared but did a good safety bearing which brought me right to 10 and gave me confidence again....then 11, 12 were great, 13 was good but should have taken the pond for the catching feature instead of the finger water feature, 14 went well..had a great route but my bearing was slightly off when I broke off the trail and I hit a similar reentrant to the one I was gunning for as my attackpoint (on the wrong side of the control)...but quickly relocated :)..., ran hard to the trail straight south and then opened up on the final trail in..
Overall challenging, tiring and glad to be out learning in the woods....
Thanks Bruce and crew for setting this up.
