Event: QOC Occoquan

Orienteering race 1:04:39 [4] 9.1 km (7:06 / km)

QOC Occoquan Blue - local meet on a very small map of my own creation. I shouldn't have lost that one split. Or I should have run without a compass like Amber - then I'd have an excuse for losing that one split. Not completely useless as technical training but probably best to think of this as mostly physical training - a good hard run in the woods. Do enough of those and I may get to feel good about spring national meet results.

Boris sat out Blue and did a shorter course or maybe just visited some selected controls with Alli before the junior training session. Realized shortly after talking with him a bit about, among other things, the non-ideal character of racing against me on maps I field checked, that I misinformed him - there is, in fact, one more event scheduled this season on a map I field checked - the east side of Fountainhead the first weekend of January. After that we can have some more consistently meaningful local competition for the rest of the season.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

An errand in downtown Silver Spring and then a visit to the reopened Renwick Gallery. Quite busy. The show consisting of 9 installations/sculptures with which they are reopening after renovations is definitely worth an hour or so of your time, if you can get down there.

Running 1:53:00 [2]

Long trail run in Rock Creek Park, just in time to avoid having to use my headlamp.

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Round trip to Takoma Aquatic Center

Deep Water Running 1:00:00 [3]

Listened to a couple of David Levine's podcasts - I'm into the 2014 vintage now.

Orienteering race 1:35:23 [4] 12.8 km (7:27 / km)

Susquehanna Stumble XVII - on a much nicer day than it looked when I got up and saw the rain outside, a victory, just, in a sprint finish with Sam Kolins after going back and forth within not much more than spitting distance of each other for much of the course, later upgraded to a much larger margin of victory when it emerged that Sam, having got ahead of me on the last window control when I succumbed to my besetting sin of the day, letting gravity seduce me into dropping lower than intended during legs of more or less contouring across the hillside, had mentally transposed himself from that control to the similar second last control, which he therefore skipped whilst trying to navigate directly to the go control from there (with understandable confusion over how he could be so low on the hillside compared to where he should have been if he'd been correct regarding where he started from). My second Stumble win, which the annually updated pamphlet leads me to believe means I've now been inducted into the Stumble Hall of Fame, tied with Ken at 2 wins.

Pretty good turnout from QOC, though somewhat better was imaginable given the absence of some usual suspects due to holiday commitments and other factors. I liked the map just fine - rather hope SVO uses is for the 2016 Mid-Atlantics.

Time is a little bit uncertain - race definitely didn't start quite at 11am but the results software appears not to have been updated with the actual start time for any results that were available at the meet and I didn't time myself.
