Orienteering race 42:35 [4] 6.4 km (6:39 / km) +100m 6:10 / km

Stars WRE - I'll concur with Will, etc. that the course and map were excellent and the balance between making use of the squiggly mountain bike trails when advantageous and ignoring them when not was crucial. There was a definite shock on first seeing the map at the complexity of the trail network overlaid on the complexity of the contours in the more interesting parts of the glaciated terrain. Second, not quite a minute and a half behind Will and about twenty seconds ahead of Hans. I feel good about that - given that our running speeds are pretty close, Will was presumably slowing to read the map a little less and/or making fewer or smaller errors in execution, but anytime I make it through a race that required nearly continuous focus on navigation without really screwing up any particular control, it was a good race.

Orienteering race 14:20 [5] 2.83 km (5:04 / km)

Stars post-WRE sprint - quite a straightforward sprint almost entirely on trails and through open areas. Slightly ahead of Will for the win (my first in a sprint this year).

Note

Fairly long wait until my evening flight at the Buffalo airport after Will dropped me off there. Unusual event of the day that I'm really glad happened early in the wait - there was some kind of security breach which resulted in the airport managers forcing everyone who had already passed through security to exit the secure area and go through the screening process again. The line stretched all the way to the end of the terminal where I was sitting and then wrapped back around in the direction from whence it came for a little ways. Fortunately, it was back down to normal by the time I had to think about heading to my boarding area.

Orienteering 30:00 [2]

Stars pre-WRE training on a 1:7500 map of the Huron Natural Area in Kitchener. Contours could have done with some refinement but were never grossly wrong. Ditto, perhaps, for the vegetation mapping. Required some effort not to be led astray by the magnetic north lines being nearly but not quite parallel to the edge of the map. Useful to get out on the right scale of map and see what the vegetation was like at this time of this particular year.

Running 48:00 [2]

Same easy jog in Rock Creek Park as on Wednesday morning. Though a lot wetter.

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Morning commute. Home by way of TPSS.

Note

Somewhere between 11.7 and 13.7 - either my new scale is very much and very inconsistently affected by humid air or gravity was fluctuating quite a lot this morning.

Cycling 1:08:00 [3]

Meant to do more in the morning but more sleep beckoned enticingly so just the usual commute to work. Home by way of PCRM, the Cleveland Park Library and Safeway in Adams Morgan.
