Note

Total rest day spent largely with Dan. Among other things, we saw "Justice, My Foot" (early 90's Johnny To comedy starring Stephen Chow and Anita Mui) and took in a small display of muppets and other Hensonia at the American History Museum.

Note

QOC Summer Series at McKeldin.

Core exercises 10:00 [4]

Full range of core stuff while watching the final TDF time trial play out roughly to form, at least as far as Landis vs Pereiro was concerned. Had planned on going to dance class but couldn't rip myself away.

Orienteering 29:06 [4] 3.9 km (7:28 / km) +165m 6:10 / km

QOC Summer Series courtesy of Ted Good on a section of his new mapping near McKeldin. Deluge from a few minutes before starting through at least halfway. Waterproof socks completely failed to live up to their billing.

Orienteering 30:00 [2]

Control pickup. Stupidly forgot to get number 10 after number 4 and had to backtrack a kilometer from 13 to get it at the end.

Cycling 1:19:00 [3]

To work, to TPSS and the pool, back north to the AFI to see "The Boxer from Shantung" then home.

Swimming 40:00 [3]

Warmup before and breaks between periods of DWR. Did more swimming as opposed to just flutterkicking than usual recently, including a fair bit of butterfly.

Deep Water Running 1:05:00 [3]

Lots of deep water running so intensity a touch lower than usual.

Running 7:00 [1]

Warmup and cooldown.

Form exercises 41:00 [4]

11x100m strides, silly walks and uphill bounding, as usual, though I must have been taking shorter steps during the bum kicks to make the whole thing take this long.

Cycling 59:00 [3]

Commute in and home so I could go onward to meet Dan at the Phillips Collection - Klee exhibition. Got home in time to catch last few kms of TDF drama.

Cycling 1:07:00 [3]

Commute in. No non-cycling exercise planned for today since brother-in-law and nieces are flying home tomorrow. Commute home late after they'd gone to bed. Just got home in time to see bits of the last few kilometers of the TDF.

Running 17:00 [1]

Warmup/cooldown/rest between repetitions.

Running 16:40 [5] 4.4 km (3:47 / km)

3x1200m I intervals on grass in 4:29, 4:29 and 4:34. Form falling apart on a fourth so I aborted it, rested a tiny bit, ran one 100m stride, considered going home, rested a bit more and then did half of an interval (the uphill half) in 2:23.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Morning commute - heat felt worse than yesterday when forced to stop in sunny areas. Dropped of my Jalas Speeds at shoe repair place two blocks from home on the return trip. Having, as far as I can tell, verified that while some companies manufacture or claim to manufacture equivalent shoes (narrow lasted O shoes without metal studs in UK size 12 or equivalent) there isn't anywhere online from which I can easily buy them, it seems worth investing in some professional repair. In case anyone's interested, while ascertaining that I stumbled across orientsport.com and found that they sell gaiters I've never heard of before that sound like Trimtex knockoffs (the photo is somewhat inconclusive) and Silva Jorgen Martensson pants in black (which I always thought looked quite cool). We'll see how much of a hassle delivery to North America is - the ordering process hard coded one's country as France and asked residents of other countries to contact them by email about delivery options. No reply yet.

Core exercises 10:00 [4]

While watching the TDF. Dan did some Pilates.

Cycling 1:09:00 [3]

Work commute. The promised heat hadn't hit yet but hot enough. I can't recall ever seeing the symbol the NWS is using for today's weather - a baleful reddish orange sun in a hazy sky with the sole subtitle, "Hot". Home by way of the Takoma Aquatic Center.

Swimming 15:00 [3]

Warmup and some flutter kicking to break up the monotony. Put more effort than usual into the kicking.

Deep Water Running 38:00 [4]

Three blocks.
