North Chagrin Score course. Used GPS in my phone, which worked pretty well. 10.8k actual travel.
Control Split time so far note
UC 4:05 4:05 – In my pre-run planning I considered doing the western controls first, but after some thought I decided I preferred doing AU and that plateau first, then the northern ones and loop back through the start to get the lowlands. But at the start I completely zoned on that and did my original plan. Probably didn’t matter, but frustrating
NT 3:38 7:43 Easy trail run.
SQ (no time) confident all the way here, until I didn’t see the control. Went back and forth, but no luck (I learned later the snag was in the stream, which never occurred to me). Decided the control was removed by vandals and went on. Lost about 4min.
AO (+SQ) 12:15 19:59 Attack from trail just past bend. This worked fine, though I went a little too far south in the reentrant before turning back (lost 30sec)
KS 1:27 21:26 – on bearing – no problems.
QB 11:36 33:03 – Ugh! Decided not to take the trail around, so went down, then up, then… my circle drawing and labeling was screwy here and I just didn’t see the G8 circle, and went down and up to get what I thought was G8 (but was really BW). Got there and was looking for a reentrant (the clue for G8), so hunted in the reentrant there, no luck. So I went for QB (figuring I could relocate there). That was perfect, and then I started to see what I’m messed up.
BW 1:54 34:57 The bag was a bit further south than expected, but fine.
G8 4:00 38:58 – After some indecision, decided the 50 points for QXB was too much to skip, so I went down and up again. Man, these were some steep reentrants! I should get extra credit for all the extra elevation I gained. I reckon that the trip from KS to QB (hitting all the points along the way) should have taken about 10-12 minutes or less, but with my doubling back it took about 17 minutes, so I lost over 5 minutes here. But the real cost is all the extra climb and fatigue.
PO 6:22 45:20 – Trail, should have gone west of the buildings. Slowing down now – I’m tired already.
RZ 2:32 47:53 – climb here looked easier than others, so I went up to get RZ since I was nearby. Considered clearing out the plateau next, but my planning before hand had involved the lower tier (and wasn’t sure how to proceed after the plateau), and I wanted to go there anyhow, so down I go. HOWEVER, gps track here is wrong – i didn’t go west on my way down.
DQ 4:35 52:28 –compass bearing from bend in trail. 1Z 5:31 58:00 – Then along the road and soccer field (again had a bad GPS reading here – I was on the grass along the road). Some hesitation on looking for the fence, which I at first thought was closer to the road. All that climbing started to take its toll here – really tired from here on out.
QBX 1:36 59:36 – Compass bearing
DH 7:51 1:07:28 - The green along the lake was completely impenetrable, so took trail to road. Passed within 10m of DH but thought it was uphill of me, not down, and missed it. Saw H8 from a distance, so doubled back to DH. Lost 2 minutes
H8 1:25 1:08:54 –straight except for obstacles
BX 7:33 1:16:27– only 15 minutes left to get back… so skipped the southern cluster, aimed for BX and will pick up what I can along the way back. Stayed low along wetland, up the steep spur to the control. Seriously slow here.
HS 3:55 1:20:22 – handrail along the reentrant worked well. Gradual uphill here was hard to move fast on.
AI 2:54 1:23:17 – unintentionally drifted left on the bearing, trail caught me.
U2 3:58 1:27:16 – thought it was on a rootstock, but there were dozens of those and I gave up and headed for the finish. But but it turned out that the control was on a rock in the streambed I passed through – got lucky on this. Lost 1 minute
NI + Finish 3:02 1:30:18 – I’m dragging!
Fun course, beautiful weather. But I saw almost no one on the course, which was a disappointment.
