Panzner wetland walk (first of season), 50F, nice. nothing new green to speak of. Collected a sphagnum and some inaturalist photos, then an hour of keying

Set remaining controls at Octagon. Rain held off and it was 5F warmer than expected, so it was rather pleasant for setting, although the cold and rain arrived about noon. Surprisingly large turnout given the weather. Major snafu was that the maps bob printed did not include the most western 500m of the map i used, so we had to discard controls on red and green, and the yellow and orange courses had a control that was right at the edge of the map.
Calf was still tight, but i kept the effort down and it did not get worse. I have started to stretch it more - unlike last problem with it, i have not been stretching it much or at all - i think that may be needed for recovery

Set controls at octagon in afternoon (50F) to reduce the effort needed during the forecast snow and freezing temps of tomorrow.. Set first batch from kendall - trotted on trail and within the first minute felt tightness in left calf. Shifted to vigorous walk for a while, that worked ok, and rest of day alternated easy walk, vigorous walk and a dogtrot. Trotting i could feel a little tightness but didn't get worse. Footing very slippery. on hills. Have about an hour or two of setting left to do tomorrow, should be manageable

On way back from field stopped off at bike shop, but he said no need to drop it off - just un-stuck my pedals then and there, and screwed in the new ones! So, zipped back home and rode in. On way home stopped at Metlin , and was almost late, so pushed it a bit. I was much too winded - i am not in shape!

A setback
First thing AM, 25F, dusting of snow, planning on 15-20min. Not slippery, but i felt slow and didn't fight that. at 8 minutes i felt fine, but decided to turn to keep it short. at about 12 minutes felt a little tightness in left calf, and walked a bit, stretched. It didn't go away so i trotted and walked the rest of the way back. Still a bit stiff even the following morning.
The three times this tightness has occurred have all been in snowy conditions, temps 25 or below, on roads. first two times had loose footing, not today.
I have run in the cold off trail (but not for >10 minutes straight) in the last few weeks, so i don't think it's just cold.
So my guess is that roads or the combination of roads and cold may be the problem. I will avoid those and see how it goes.

25F, but clear streets. Intended to go 20-25, but on autopilot wound up on the hollywood loop. Went extra slow and careful as a result, all went well.. No calf problems.
The traction for my neck has clearly helped, but it is a rollercoaster - sometimes i realy have pains, others i am finally pretty much normal

Late today went to PT and they gave me a traction thingy to stretch the neck and vertebrae - that was one of the things that seemed closest to working a few weeks ago. I feel silly, but I'll give it a try.

Control checking at Octagon - mildly breakable snow crust, high 20s. I ran very gingerly both to protect myself from slipping, and to avoid over working the calf. No problems with calf, although some of the trails near the ledges were very slick ice under a thin coat of snow. Ran for perhaps 2-5 minutes at a time, walked the rest. Most control locations will work

At BNP - brilliantly sunny, 2" snow from weekend. Shame it's not enough to ski. Road was clear, did about 4minutes on slightly slippery snow. No calf problems

Very careful and easy in the neighborhood. One lap of memorial-portage block on and off with June. Then discovered that i must have dropped my car keys so did another lap. Didn't find them. Did a lap with the bike - didn't find them. Then walked it backwards and finally saw them. Sigh
But the running gave no problems (lots of starts and stops, gentle)
