Shawnee Extreme Rogaine - Navigator for Bonnie Hartmann (bee-stompers). Good teamwork, good division of labor, lots of fun. Decided to get high points with easy navigation early, which meant that some trick ones would happen just before or just after dark. The gamble worked - did half of those in light, other 2 in dark, but though slow, it worked. Navigation was good most of the time, a few parallel errors and a couple of map misorientations (rogaine map, so not only NS lines but E/W (and they were indistinguishable), but because of the slower pace i could recover quickly. About 3 hrs in i began to realize we could sweep the course, and adjusted accordingly.
Lots of thick briars on the ridges that were amazing in extent and thickness. Lots of deadfall and very slippery rocks in the hollows, and very steep hills in between. It was usually best to stay on trail as long as possible. Little water in the creeks, beautiful weather, clear and 70s
We walked offtrail, and uphill, but trotted most of the flats and downhills on trail. I had real problems keeping up the pace uphill, even walking, but Bonnie kept me encouraged and moving.
Covered 30.5Miles via GPS, 30k based on point to point(looks like 150lines or so on the map (20 feet/line).
I ate two powerbars in about 8 hrs, and after that mostly ate trail mix (maybe half a 10oz bag). Drank about 1 cambelback bladder and a water bottle every 3 hrs. Could have used something different (hard candies? slimjim) or a treat, but not much more.
At dark I changed shirts and that helped prevent chilling then, though it was quite warm considering the season.
I intended to wear two pairs of socks, but didn't. I should have. No blisters but my feet are very sore from debris that kept sneaking in (and multiple shoe emptying), and swam around a bit. Gaitors might have helped this (and also might have reduced ankle damage from greenbriar loops that gathered there).
Very sore behind right knee about 20 hr on, but tolerable.
The Innov8 trail shoes i ordered a month ago would have been perfect for this - i needed more grip, and a stiffer sole for the rocks. Shame they went backorder.
After seeing Waller's log i remembered that i also made a couple of 90degree errors because of the lack of distinction between NS and EW grid lines.
