Orienteering race 5:47:02 [4] 21.8 mi (15:55 / mi) +596m 14:40 / mi

Nain Rouge Rogaine with Sparks.

The good:
Steve and Angel did an amazing job organizing and directing. Even though the scoring was more complicated than I would like they handled it fine. At first, I thought the event was too expensive, but they offered a lot and having showers at the finish was helpful for the long ride home. I don't mind paying extra to not finish in a field.

The bad:
Mystery ControI. I strongly dislike the mystery control format. It takes an event based on skill and training and adds in luck. If you ran counter-clockwise you had a severe disadvantage and may have missed on 275 points of daughter controls. 1475 meters to a daughter control is extreme if you already cleared that area.

Compass. Not that I pulled it out of my pack, but my compass doesn't have degrees labeled on it. I might need to get a backup, but then I would have 2 that I don't use.

Teams splitting. We see this often but it is just not fair when one teammate gets to sit and wait while the other punches a control 500m away. Sparks and I each touched every control.

The plan 35, 50, 73(M), 62, 71, 70, 36, 32, 31, 60, 61, 75, 51, 40, 42, 41(M and beads), 52, W, 77, 65, 56(M), 64, 63, 76, 55, 53, 47, 44, 43, 34, 33.

Our plan didn't include the mother controls because we didn't know their locations. The beads were at one of the 5 daughter controls and would help us ward off the Nain Rouge.

Start to 35. We jumped out into the front of the pack. People weren't making it easy for Erin and I to stay together. We led a large train to 35.

35 to 50. Sigh! I was too trusting of the map! My bearing (remember I don't use a compass) was fine but when we hit the road nothing matched the map. I semi-convinced myself that I had taken a horrible bearing and got pulled west by the trails. The bike trails, junctions, and intersections with the road were total fiction. My best guess is that someone just used OSM data with some slight additions from orthos. By looking at others' GPS tracks they weren't affected due to their route choices. Once I realized the trails were crap we relocated to the road and ran around. It cost us a good 20 minutes and significant extra distance on our legs.

50-73. Easy trail run and we saw the daughter control on the way in.

73-daughter-62. Grabbed the daughter on the way out and another trail run to 62. Started to see many other runners. That lost 20 minutes let many jump in front of us.

62-71 We ran the road and decided to keep our feet drier.

71-70 Another long road run. I cut in a little early for 70 because I followed the herd path.

70-36 We had to stop to help a runner who was stuck in the mud. I wasn't strong enough to get her out and needed Sparks. Lost another 5-10 minutes here.

36-32 Another trail run. Most of the controls were very close to trails and easy to find.

32-31 Easy trail run with a tiny uphill scramble at the end.

31-60 We took the power lines and had to avoid the unhappy dogs. 60 was the only bingo control on the course. Such a large feature.

60-61 Up to the trail and then a long trail/road run. Easy control and we saw several others at the control.

61-75 Took a bearing. This was the first control that wasn't a yellow or orange control. I stayed a little south to avoid the reentrant.

75-51 Another nice control as we started to jump past a few slower teams.

51-40 Jumped west to the trail as it seemed easier.

40-42 More road and trail running. Control was just off an unmapped trail.

42-41 Another easy bearing to a mother control. The daughter was on a little island on the other side of the road. We picked up beads here which would help protect us from the Nain Rouge.

We picked up 52 and then a long road run to the west of the map and 77.

Next up was 62 and then we got truly wet for the first time. Swamp water up to our knees.

Trail run to 56 which was a mother. Now the daughter was 1475 meters at 68 degrees. (BTW, Moscow compass doesn't have degrees on them. I didn't even bother to take it out of my pack.) I used Erin's and it was very obvious where the control was.

We were starting to run short on time. We grabbed 64 and 63. Then we picked up the daughter of 76 before 76 itself. You could see one from the other and this seemed to minimize the climb.

We were short on time and had to skip 55, 53, 47, 44. On the way back to the east map we picked up the daughter of 56.

We finished clearing the east map by grabbing 43, 34, and 33 on the way to the finish.

7th overall and 3rd coed.
