Orienteering race 1:15:39 [4] 5.4 km (14:01 / km)

Day 1 US Champs Little Truckee Summit.

I am happy with this result. I hit every control pretty cleanly, but had 2 questionable route choices. The climb was definitely more than advertised, and the woods were junkier than I thought they would be, but with stretches of pure beauty. When I got in, I didn't think I had gone fast enough to do so well, but I guess I did. Now I just have to hold Sharon off for one more day.

Note

Yay! My back is feeling much better today. My massage therapist spend the whole hour just on my back, using hot towels, a cayenne heat rub, and BioFreeze. She was amazed at how tight it was...she said the muscles were spasming as she rubbed them. Ick.

Now just to take it easy today and tomorrow to not reaggravate it, and maybe it will still be a "go" for this weekend.

Note

Nothing for me today as I did something to my back. :-(

I was stretching this morning and reached over to get my glasses off the night stand, and the muscles on both sides of my back just seized up. It was horrible. It was difficult to walk, and there was no way I could twist around. I sat all morning with a heating pad on my back while I worked, and that helped some, but it is still difficult to move.

Luckily, I already had an appointment scheduled with my massage therapist tomorrow, so I called and told her it was going to all about my back! I have never had any issues with my back before, and I hope this is not the beginning of something Charlie-esque!

Orienteering 1:09:00 [2]

Well, this was a bizarre event. We were down in Peaceful Valley, just for today instead of the originally scheduled 2-day training event. We cancelled the training day because I didn't have my act together and didn't get it planned in time. Next year.

Anyway, we were just having a regular local event, and everything was going fine until the head ranger of the Scout camp came riding up on his tractor. I thought he was there to cut the long grass that they didn't want us parking in, but no, he was very angry and ready to get in someone's face. And that first someone was the meet director, Galen. From a distance, I saw the ranger charge up to Galen and start wagging his finger in Galen's face. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but it was obvious he was not happy.

I walked over to them, and the ranger wheeled around and started in on me. Evidently, we had set the courses in an area that he felt we weren't supposed to be in and wasn't the agreed upon area. He said he had scouts in camp and that there were orienteers running everywhere through the camp. We needed to pull the controls and get the people out of the woods. I tried to explain to him that there was no way to communicate with the folks out in the woods, and that they would all be through the camp soon and into the allowable area.

That was not good enough for him. He demanded that I go out, collect the controls, and sweep the area for people. I told him we would do what we could, but it wouldn't be quick and I couldn't guarantee we'd catch everyone. And with that, he huffed away on his tractor. So, we modified the beginning of the courses for everyone who was left to start, which really sucked because for most courses, that meant a long run to get to the middle of the original course, and start from there. I went out to collect some of the early controls, to show that we were cooperating, and I caught a few folks and explained to them what happened. Most people were understanding and went with the flow.

So, more of a training event for people, which isn't horrible but not what was advertised. I talked to Doug, who got the permission, and Doug said he had asked for the southern part of the camp and the rest of the area, Gates, that the Ranger said we needed to stay in. He's going to talk to the ranger about the misunderstanding, but I'm not sure it will do any good. This guy is new this year at the camp, and has not been pleasant in any of our dealings with him. I'm just afraid we won't be allowed back in for awhile.

In the end, I didn't get to run a course, but I spent a good amount of time pulling those early controls and then some more after everyone was in. Still a good time in beautiful woods.
