Strength Training 50:00 [2]

Decided to take it easy on my knee. It wasn't very swollen this morning, and it didn't hurt too badly. I might try running tomorrow to see how it feels.

Orienteering race 1:22:00 [3] 5.88 km (13:57 / km) +285m 11:14 / km

West Point Day 2 Green course on Long Mountain. I dropped to Green today because I woke up this morning with a swollen, stiff and very painful knee. At one point on yesterday's course, I was coming down off of a cliff and my left foot got stuck on a rock while I was stepping down, causing my left knee to bend way more than it's capable of, due to arthroscopic surgery many years ago. It hurt as soon as I did it, but then got better throughout the race, and felt fine all evening. But not when I woke up this morning, and I was actually quite surprised. I tried walking/jogging around Buckner a bit to see if it would loosen up, but it stayed pretty painful, so I decided the prudent thing to do was to drop to Green. I still managed to have quite a few problems navigating, too numerous to mention, so it doesn't go down as a particularly stellar day in my book.

Note

The highlight of my weekend was the results for my son, Tanner. This weekend was his first time on Green since he just moved up to M-18. He has a tendency to DNF very easily, which he did on Saturday, declaring the map impossible to read. Well, we went over the part of his course that he did complete, talked about map simplification (ignoring the boulders sometimes to concentrate on the contours and general lay of the land), and then I explained the importance of relocating and practicing it so you get better and faster at it. Well, he went out about an hour before me today, and half way through the course, I decided there was no way he was going to finish today's course either. But when I came in, he told me he *had* finished and was only 3 minutes behind me! I was such a proud mom!!

Orienteering race 1:36:55 [4] 6.27 km (15:27 / km) +325m 12:17 / km

Red Day 1 at West Point on Long Mountain - East. This was a pretty good day. I was a little high on #1 and a little low on #2. On #3, I was right on track to the boulder, but got pulled away by another control. I opted for the roads to #6, and hit that pretty cleanly. I also stayed on the road from #7 to #8, slogging through the last stretch into #8 through unmapped blueberry. I had my first troubles going to #10. I got caught up in pretty bad green, not all of which was mapped, and when I popped out on the other side, it took a bit before I figured out where I had come out. My next set of troubles came at #12. I contoured around too low, and found a lot of other controls. I realized I had to climb a bit, and then saw the water jugs at the control. All in all, not a disastrous day.

Running 42:12 [3] 4.6 mi (9:10 / mi)

Another day doing something. Yay for me.

Note

AOWN report: On both Saturday's run and today's run, I saw several dead snakes on the road that runs by a stream. And, where there are dead snakes there are bound to be live snakes...yuck.

Also, on Saturday's run and today's run, there was a female mallard standing in a stream, in the exact same spot, in the exact same position. I had to stop today for a better look because for a second there, I thought it might have been a decoy.
