I had picked out this place, Fraser Nature Preserve, when I saw it on Google Maps as I was looking for a nearby restaurant. I thought it would be perfect for the New Trail badge. So that's what I did today, in the middle of the day, as I waited for some caulk to dry. I don't normally enjoy running during the hottest part of unbearably hot days, but that's just how the schedule worked out today.
This is a Nature Conservancy tract of land, but I have to say there was nothing spectacular about it. There's a 2.25 mile lollipop trail, which also has a connector trail to the Potomac Heritage Trail, which could be cool to do on another day. The loop trail was pretty packed down, which made me think it was well-used, but the plants on the side completely encroached into the trail, so I was running through branches for a lot of the time.
I saw a couple of deer, each by themselves, who didn't seem very concerned with me; a couple of woodpeckers, and heard some frogs croaking. Other than that, nothing special. So I was surprised when I got home to see that they had a 25-page manual on the care of this preserve, with a 3-level volunteer program. Wow!
Note: I just saw on Google maps that it is directly across the Potomac River from Blockhouse Point!
