Lost Coast trail from Usal. Sooooo good. Might be better than Yosemite.

Apparently the Lost Coast is so hardcore that few people actually use the one trail that spans the 50mi wilderness. When they were building the coast highway (HWY 1), the planners figured they had enough manpower and resources to build the road up the entire California coast, even through areas like Big Sur. But when they got to the Lost Coast the engineers were like, "Fuck this," (Pretty sure that's a direct quote), "We're going around this shit."

The above^ is a quick summary of what I knew about the Lost Coast before driving up here, but in reality it is so much gnarlier. The trail seems like an afterthought and is extremely hard to follow, almost being erased by vegetation in places.

In the redwoods it's all pine duff, alternately super fast and then techy. Out on the ridge the trail is more of a suggestion, with crazy overgrown grasses and wildflowers (some dark green-type blackberries, etc...) Keeps you on your toes the whole time. Coupled with the rugged mountains and sweeping views it's pretty ungodly tight.

I really want to come back and run the whole thing, but should probably come more prepared. I definitely underestimated this thing, didn't eat dinner last night, and bonked pretty hard at mile ~9. It's hella humid and I got pretty hyponatremic (wanted to just throw myself off the cliff). Next time I need to bring vitalyte, bars, and pants for the stupid amounts of thorns and bushes.
