Orienteering race 2:37:36 [3] *** 12.89 km (12:14 / km) +357m 10:44 / km
ahr:166 spiked:18/25c

Classic of US Team Trials. Very unsatisfying race for two reasons - 1) map + course; and 2) my performance. The course notes said that there might be more patches of green than are mapped and that they would be a minor annoyance that could be avoided by running around those. The reality was that the map was very green and mostly mapped as white. If the course notes had been accurate, some of my route choices would have been very different - using more trails. Which brings me to the second point that, while the course notes said that some trail junction might be hard to make out in the terrain, the reality was that some trails which were mapped exactly like the other trails were not to be found in reality. Which I guess would be acceptable except for the fact that some route choices allowed for using these non-existent trails for navigation. There exists a symbol for a "vanishing trail", which would not have required too much work to use at least in the areas where the runners could be reasonable be assumed to run through. My performance is a whole different story - this was the first weekend ever when I experimented with taking Gu with me on the course and my Gu management was not up to par - should have taken one at control 7 because after that my brain just shut down and I ran off the map for 5 minutes on the way to 8 and made a 15 minute mistake to 10. Hadn't done that in about 10 years...

Middle of Team Trials. Generally ok, except for one control (#13), which was unfair - might as well choose the US team for WOC by tossing a coin.

TT sprint, did not feel exactly great, thus slow pace. Perhaps 30-50 seconds of mistakes.
