NYC Marathon. My marathon running debut. I was quite satisfied with my preparation (I had done about 75% of the planned training), but still had no idea what to expect. I somewhat arbitrarily decided that 3:45 would be the time I would be aiming for. The pace groups were 3:40 and 3:50, so I was planning to run faster that the 3:50 group. The start was not too fast for me because of my politeness, whereby I found myself (start number 11000 something) catching and overtaking loads of people with start numbers in 20000s, which could only mean that for whatever reason they had lined up ahead of me. The first mile or two there was not a lot of runnign going on, mostly it was trying to avoid stepping on people and pushing through the especially slow enthusiasts who obviously believed that the further up front they start, the bigger chance of breaking 8 hours (or whatever) they have. That did not help me to maintain even pace and heart rate, however, I felt extremely good until about mile 15, more or less died at mile 20 and barely survived the last three miles. I think that with the experience I got from trainign for and running this marathon, I could easily break 3:30 in near future, if I make up my mind to do so some time soon. All in all it was a great experience, of course. My split times were:
5k 27:17 27:17
10k 54:49 27:32 (bathroom break)
15k 1:21:02 26:13
20k 1:47:22 26:20
25k 2:15:01 27:39 (bathroom break)
30k 2:41:44 26:43
35k 3:09:59 28:15
40k 3:41:16 31:17 (ouch!)
last 2 k: 13:17
