Adventure Race race (Canning River) 4:21:21 intensity: (1:45 @0) + (8:33 @1) + (32:04 @2) + (1:18:57 @3) + (1:41:33 @4) + (38:29 @5) 54.49 km (4:48 / km) +100m 4:45 / km
ahr:161 max:199

Headed out behind Wally and Peter Gigengack. Decided to do all the bonuses without working out if they were worth it. Wally slowly got away, Peter was just ahead of me most of the way slowing me down punching a couple of controls, and he got a bit of extra gap at a couple of road crossing as I slowed for passing cars. Peter disappeared between 4 and X7 so I figured he wasn't getting the last bonus. By myself through to the the TA.

Started the paddle just in front of Andre stayed in front of him to P11 and P12 but he got just ahead on the way to P13, where we hung around for a while whilst the purple avenger clung onto the wooden post, until Andre nudge his paddle back to him, then I snuck in before Andre, but he still got to P14 before me and he slowly disappeared into the distance. I Thought the bonus X15, would just be worth it so went for it. Passed Grant Pepper on my way back from X15 but it didn't take long for him to get to X15 then come flying past again.

Onto the bike I think Peter Gige was transitioning just as I was leaving. Took the wrong road to the freeway, so a little bit of extra distance. Got to B2, couldn't find anything giant, Peter G got there as well, still nothing giant, eventually Peter said he was going to guess, so I did the same having already wasted 8 minutes trying to find the answer. Bit of leap frogging with Peter till he smashed away after B6 and I had a bit of trouble finding TA2 since I could barely make out the streets yet alone the names on the map.

Headed north on the aerial photo exercise, didn't look/consider if the options were worth it, just went for everything. Overshot X25 because I'd copied down the descriptions badly and thought it said carport not carpark, eventually decided there wasn't any building around so looked at the description a bit more closely and headed back to the carpark. Managed to avoid getting muddy without wasting too much time. Got back to transition with Grant Pepper still there and I think only one more person not to have gone through yet. Got going on the bike again before Grant and he kept catching me at controls till B8 after which I got a decent gap on him. Saw Andre and Peter Gige coming out of B9 as I was going in, so hoped I may yet catch them, but didn't.

Looks like I didn't really gain any extra time by doing the optional controls, so I guess if I hadn't done them I could have saved some energy and finished faster. But I think I prefer doing the full course anyway and it looks like I beat Andre after all, but still 9mins behind Saz. Pity I end up being one of the last finishers.

Couple of laps of the lake in 30:16 and 31:16.

Arms started feeling like they've been wasting away lately pretty early on.
