Note

Finally caught up on log, since I went round my parents to print the GG nav dash maps before heading out there and forgot to bring the keys, so had to wait till they got home, and their internet works better from in my car, than mine does from home. Now to map printing (cross fingers).

Running (Matilda Bay - Kings Park) 1:01:12 [3] 11.69 km (5:14 / km)
ahr:156

Easyish longish run, trying to work on my aim of getting more k's into my running. Was tempted to pick up the pace coming back along the freeway and river as I traditionally do, but stuck with the plan of not pushing hard.

Itching to give the 12/13km hard run a go now since I wasn't far under 5:00/km without much effort.

After the weather the previous night I prepared myself for cold wet conditions, long pants and shirt, vest, fingered gloves and carried a rain jacket. Got outside and it was nice and clear.

Caught someone whilst crossing a fallen tree just north of Russell Rd, he took a while to tip toe over the tree and quickly took off, whilst I was clearing a stick from my chain and thinking my back tyre was feeling a bit funny, so I was about 50m behind him for a fair while. Executed a nice plan of catching him up the hill to Armadale Rd and latched on just at the train station, so sat in till near Roe Hwy where I took the lead till he turned off at Farrington (I think memory fading now).

Mostly easy the rest of the way, except latching onto a speedy pair around Mill Pt Rd.

After observing nice clear conditions all day out the window at work I decided to leave warm gear and rain jacket at work, so left with just shorts and long sleeve shirt on. Got out the door an notice some thicker cloud. Turned at the narrows and clouds down south looked ominous, started wondering if I could get all the way home in break in the weather.

Also when I turned at the narrows a couple of speedy types went past as I was waiting to turn so set off to reel them in. Caught them after a while and then sat in and let them do the work for a while. One turned off at Canning Hwy and the other started a pattern of making a break through any slow twisty spots and me working to get back on and sitting in again. Didn't see any point taking the lead since he kept going faster through the twisty bits.

Since he was still leading at Fiona Stanley I took the lead and never saw him again, thought he was there but when I eventually looked he was gone. Oh and it was dark and started raining by the time I got to Farrington.

Went cautiously heading to Russell Rd till I passed the mornings fallen tree, which was now half way off the path. Then was making nice easy speed till I got to Rowley Rd. Turning east I discovered why it had been easy, wind seemed to now be NE'ly and speed and impulsion died in the butt.

Riding dark crappy back road in the rain is somewhat sub-optimal, especially when I could see stuff all whenever a car was coming the other way. Eventually turned down Tonkin and had the brilliant idea of taking off my clear glasses whilst I was waiting for the lights, and suddenly I could see clearly again and picked up speed again.

Made it home and could not perceive and wind whatsoever.

By the time I'd had a snack and a drink before I hit the shower I was having flash backs of Espresso coldness.

Running (Home - 70 acre loop) 47:48 [4] 10.03 km (4:46 / km)
ahr:164 max:182

Medium distance run with the pace a bit higher than 5:00/km that I'd traditionally do for this sort of distance. I don't think I had to work too hard either.

So maybe Tooms sessions are working, need to do a good 12km Kings Park run and see if I do under an hour without too much effort. Maybe try for 13km in an hour.

Orienteering race (Frazzle day 2 cameo) 2:48:20 [4] 19.54 km (8:37 / km)

Since I was planning on being out there for quite a while I wore a hydration pack.

Took the long round the hill route to 2, stuffed around for quite a while around 3, which was most likely already in the correct position since I'd seen Richard Matthews walking back towards the map change area with a control on my earlier round the mountain trek.

Was surprised when someone caught me around 5, since I thought everyone else would have been way ahead already, still had him in sight till around 9.

....hmm, I was sure I'd already loaded my route onto routegadget, I'll just do it again ... if I can pick the right gpx file .... gahh internet's not working again ....

Took another long way round from 12 to 13, going through the paddocks to the north to avoid going up and down the hill and having to work out where I was along the way.

No major problems back to the map change and was going well on the long leg from 22 to 23 keeping contact along the way, remembered the location of 17 (since it was on the 1st map back at the map change) went straight back into it the same way I'd earlier came out of there and then using it as an attackpoint I took a bad angle and stuffed around a bit before getting 23.

Got off track again on the way to 24, eventually realised where the watercourses I was crossing were. Stuffed around with some thick bush, cliffs and going round the wrong way to the gully to get 27.

Overall happy with my effort, under 3 hrs and under 20km, lot less big time consuming errors than I've been making lately, but Wil beat me by nearly 20mins, which is pretty disappointing.

Cancelling the results because one control was on the wrong rock surface seems a bit soft to me and a bit harsh on the setters and some of the early starters who seemed to find it without too much delay. Of course since I initially thought the rock surface symbol meant a clearing and the correct rock surface was only about 4x4 not the 20x20 indicated, I was always going to have trouble finding it.
