Note

Waited till after lunch when things had warmed up sufficiently and then decided to get outside and do something useful, fix retic. Unfortunately the temp. dropped down to 42.5 whilst I was getting my sunscreen on, so I missed the heat of the day. Quite comfortable plodding around fixing sprinklers, except when I was hunting for bits in the shed and instantaneously turned into a puddle.
8 AM

Running (new tip loop) 43:23 [2] 7.47 km (5:48 / km)
ahr:160 max:171 slept:8.0

Had a nice sleep in, and waited till it had warmed up enough before going for a light run.

Left calf still a bit twingey when running so just kept an easy pace.

Verge on the eastern side Hopkinson Rd near Thomas Rd was carbonised from early yesterday mornings fire, which we were oblivious to due to the sound of the easterly which was blowing.

Went out along my normal short loop, then continued north near the far corner of the short loop and came back round the tip and down the Tonkin Hwy path past the rest of the burnt area, which was nearly all road reserve which main roads is too useless to properly reduce the fire load on, and the back fences of the properties on Kellet Dr (across the road from our neighbours).

Realised along the way that there is no escape route from Kellet Dr, which finishes at a big sound barrier wall. Also access to the road reserve area for fire trucks is very limited due to it being surrounded by drains and a huge sound barrier earth bund.

Matilda Bay - Kings Park

Longish and hilly, into Kings Park and up the Law Walk, down to synergy. Couple of minutes behind 5min/km schedule by the time I got Fraser Ave, with left calf not happy, normal increase in speed around the river, to get back to planned average never happened with no push out of the left leg. Hot and sticky morning probably didn't help either. Even though it was slow at least I did the distance.

Figured if I want to do a 20min 5km, I need to be able to do 4:00/km, couldn't get there today, but worked really hard. Legs will appreciate a day or two of rest now.

Darling Downs to Claremont

Nice cool moist conditions, not much wind, went easy all the way after yesterdays race. Legs a bit burny around Cockburn and not really willing to spin over 90rpm by the narrows.

Didn't see any other cyclist for the first hour of the ride, and only a few around after Cranford Ave. Bunch of wusses, if you've got two legs and a heart beat get out there and use it I say. Was a bit surprised to see some guy exposing his fancy TT bike to the rain but.

Claremont to Darling Downs

Pre-departure check of seabreeze confirmed what the flag outside had been telling me all day 20-25 knot easterly, so I'd need to save myself for Rowley Rd. Contemplated seeing if Belinda was round her Mums place so I could of got a lift from Rossmoyne, but thought better of that idea.

Further confirmation of wind status heading round Mounts Bay Rd to the narrows, struggling to maintain 20kmh. Few drops of rain crossing the narrows, couldn't see what clouds they were coming from, figured it was just earlier rain blowing out of the trees up on the scarp.

Down towards Canning Bridge and somehow seemed to be riding into the wind still, decided it was more of a gusterly than particularly easterly. A girl passed me as I was plodding along at about 25kph, so I jumped on for a free ride until she went over the freeway at the scout hall, hopefully she didn't get blown off the bridge and out to Freo.

Plodded the rest of the way home with the wind seeming to blow from everywhere, no other cyclists south of Cranford Ave again. Spent the rest of the ride craving Big Macs and Quarter Pounders.

Got to Rowley Rd in 1hr 20mins, so figured about 13km at 20kph would let me scrape in just under 2 hours, eventually got there with 32 secs to spare.

After this ride the seabreeze holds no fears, if it can blow me out over 2 hours then good on it. But I would never of thought that an afternoon easterly would ever be such a killer.

Got in the house and Belinda and the kids were outside feeding the horses, to find fresh Rossmoyne IGA receipt on the bench, so Belinda had been to her Mums and cardboard McDonalds drink holder on the lounge, luckily they'd only been there for lunch not dinner, but that didn't help my energy starved craving.

Triathlon race (Rockingham) 1:19:23 [5]

Well, only about 30 sec. faster than last year. Felt horrible in the swim, maybe due to wetsuit being too tight, maybe from only one swim session in months, hoped to have a lead on Danger going into the ride, but he came out in front of me, and I didn't see him again. Not too bad in the ride and run, passing a few people and being passed by a few people.

Swim 17:08
Bike 40:10
Run 22:04

Can't compare time to last year too much as bike was only 18.5km (last year 19.7km, but cut short to avoid the 45 degree railway crossing were people seem to stack it for some reason) and run was 4.88km (last year 4.44km), swim was probably some completely random distance.

Since I haven't been doing any swimming I probably shouldn't bother doing any more triathlons, since the only reason I did any was because I was running swimming and riding anyway.

Quick ride up to Champion Lakes, ended up a bit longer than planned because I wanted to use the new path that goes in at the northern end of the lake.

Note

Finally decided to put entry in for Rockingham triathlon, had second thoughts when I saw late entry was now $85, so even more of a rip off, but since it's the only one I did last year I figure it can be the only one I do this year and I can see if I'm faster now, despite only one swim in the last 4 or 5 months.

Also 3rd day in a row with no exercise due to looking after kids and work Christmas lunch, better get out and do something this evening before I waste away.

Running (Home - short loop) 24:23 [3] 5.34 km (4:34 / km)
ahr:176 max:183

Quick run between Belinda getting home from home and then going out again.

Short bridle trail loop. Got suckered into taking the dog who failed to catch a rabbit (again) on the way to the front gate.

Went out at a reasonable pace and couldn't really pick up the pace on the way back, the dog was starting to lag a bit and my legs didn't really want to kick in, possibly out of sympathy for the dog.

Running (Golf Course Handicap) 20:51 [3] 4.83 km (4:19 / km)
ahr:186 max:192

My first ever 5km TT

Based on my occasional 5.3km loop around the bridal trails from home, for which my best avg pace is 4:27 and that's dead flat zero hill, so I thought 21mins would be pretty good, 20 mins would be a miracle, Tooms put me on 19:40.

So went out hard to try to stay under 4:00 pace, turns out HR was over 180 before the 200m mark and was in the high 180's most of the way.

Seemed to be holding the gap to Tooms for a while, then tRicky came past not far past the first corner and as he disappeared so did Tooms. Was trying to work out where the turn off Empire wass, when fletch came past and pointed me in the right direction.

Uphill into the wind on Burston was a real struggle, as I'd been thinking it would be all downhill from empire, caught sight of Liz on the hill and eventually got past on the downhill run to the finish.

Probably need to go out a bit easier next time .. and review my HR zones, hmm need to recalculate them, but staying in anaerobic rather than redline may help.

Darlings Downs to Claremont

Good southerly blowing, so tried to stay as close to 30kph as possible along Rowley Rd, then went hard up the freeway, only soft targets along the way. Catching a mountain bike guy on the back road after Leach hwy, but stayed behind him as I had a drink, then he got across the road, whilst I got stuck waiting for traffic, finally caught him just before Canning Hwy and rested up as we caught a group that seemed to think following a chick on a mountain bike was a good place to be. Some guy at the tail of the group eventually went past as we got onto an open stretch so I followed and went straight past him. No one passed me all the way, so no one to try and get a tow from.

Concentrated on keeping cadence over 90, and averaged 90rpm for the trip, not sure how I could of got a max. of 144rpm.

Claremont to Darling Downs

Hard work over the narrows, chased down a couple of guys then didn't get much protection behind them with cross breeze, so struggled to hang on, eventually got some relieve and cruised for a while, lead guy died, so went with the no.2 for a while, but he bailed at Canning Hwy.
So on my own till Mt Henry when I managed to hang in behind some fancy pants bike shop outfit guy, but kept losing ground to him through all the places I slow down to avoid killing myself or anyone else, so he slowly disappeared into the distance.
No more assistance from there, had trouble gaining ground on a roller blader on the fast down hill (not so fast with the headwind), but went straight past on the next climb.
Made good speed down Rowley Rd and only a short wait to get across Tonkin Hwy.

Running race (MetrO) 40:23 [4] 7.86 km (5:08 / km)
ahr:174 max:190

Legs nicely rested after an easy 2nd half of the week.

Headed out the west side to start with, was going to drop 28 and 25, but since 8 to 12 was bad did them anyway. got 22 and headed through the middle, dropping 5 and staying away from 24 and 16, then into the hospital and back through the south, getting very in and outy to the last few controls.

Oh and had a collision with a bollard on the path upto 13, whilst I was looking at my map.

Took a highlighter to mark the ones I dropped along the way, to avoid running short again.

Still need to get better at reading the map quickly so I can run hard more.

Swimming 56:03 [3] 2.5 km (22:25 / km)
slept:7.0

Was thinking I'd go paddling this morning, but thought if I want to do a triathlon in the next couple of weeks having a swim was probably a higher priority.
Only one set with flippers as I thought my legs didn't need the work but 2.5km straight of freestyle is a bit much after not swimming for a couple of months (make that 4 months tomorrow, except 500m recovery swims one of which I'd logged as 500km).
500 free 10:40
500 free 11:17
500 flippers 9:39
500 free 11:34
500 free 11:56
Oh so slow, but to be expected.
5 PM

Running intervals 1:11:00 [4] 11.0 km (6:27 / km)

1km Intervals at City Beach (left GPS at home)

Out into the wind and up a slight hill, 2 mins rest, back down hill and down wind, 2 mins rest

4:20, 4:17
4:42, 4:24
4:39, 4:12
4:26, 4:06

Legs pretty tight dead and didn't really feel like they'd give any speed, tried to consistently lose ground to Tooms and slightly shorten the rest to reset the gap each time. Somehow started just in front of Tooms on the 6th and the bit of extra motivation woke the legs up to match Tooms for the last 3.

Few drops of rain on the way in, got the rain cover on my backpack whilst waiting for the Tonkin Hwy Lights. Thought I was making good time to Cockburn, but over 40mins.

Lost all push with the wet and twisty underpasses and maybe also that every good target I spotted in the distance seemed to disappear on me.

Legs a bit sore and very tired now after running Fri & Sat. will probably be a struggle home tonight.

Claremont to Darling Downs

Wind was more westerly than southerly, so thought I could limit the damage down the freeway and get a good run down Rowley Rd.

Good speed down to the narrows wasn't too promising for the run south, but wind was quite light. Jumped in behind the yellow jersey as he went past approaching canning hwy, but dropped off the back soon after as the rain came in, but he didn't seem to be getting away too much over Mt Henry, so tried to chase him down, finally getting close approaching Farrington and he turned off .. bastard. Then another guy I'd just passed came past me heading up to Roe Hwy so I jumped in behind but as soon as I went to take a turn in front he turned off .. lazy last gasp bastard. Worked hard down Rowley Rd with the tailwind not really as helpful as I'd hoped. Passed a chick along Rowley Rd who seem to be going a lot faster and a lot harder to pas than she looked. After waiting a couple of minutes for a green light across Tonkin Hwy I was getting really tempted to get off my bike and kick the crap out of the stupid button. Might just ignore the lights when there's no cars around in future, or go the alternate offroad option through the bridal trail underpass near the tip.

Running race (Woodlupine MetrO) 54:54 [4] * 9.8 km (5:36 / km)
ahr:178 max:188 spiked:22/

Decided to leave the 5 controls in the SW and miss a few in the middle as well. Going 16 to 17 decided I had some pretty long legs, but stuck with it, was sure of how many more I was missing, thought about getting 22 just in case. Got to the finish in about 44:38, then counted my punches a few times, checked the map ... then ran out to get my 22nd. Just snuck in front of Mark Imbert at the finish .. 2nd time round, time from GPS 50:12 as I stopped it after first finishing and restarted when I went out for the last one. Not sure of actual time.

Legs stiffened up pretty quickly after finishing.

First proper dist. run for 2 months. Left calf was a little tingly, was pretty happy to get off the hill without stuffing it up again.
Stopped on the way up Crawley path to talk to a couple of old guys who I worked out from one of their caps had served in the same battalion as my dad in Vietnam, they didn't know him, but now I have to convince my Dad to join them for their weekly walk around Kings Park.

Claremont to Darling Downs

Thought about meeting Belinda and the kids at my parents place, but couldn't think of a nice way to get to Gosnells. Last time I rode Perth to Gosnells (about 20 years ago) I was a bit less sensitive about riding in heavy traffic.

So settled in for an epic battle all the way home, right after blasting down to the narrows. Got a nice tow from around South Tce to Canning Hwy. Tried to get on another tow crossing Mt Henry, but they lost me passing slower riders and calf was getting a bit twingey again. Finally got off at Rowley Rd and got confirmation that there wasn't much westerly in the seabreeze, so more hard work all the way home.

Garmin connect seems to have started using bing instead of googlemaps for some reason, and it's rubbish.
