Adventure Racing 7:54:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon S-Lab 5s (Softground)

RockstAR adventure race with Simpy. The competition this year in our category was ridiculous, so we tapered our expectations and decided just to go out and try and execute a decent race,

We got there early, and took our time mapping out what we hoped this year would be an achievable route. We wanted to map out just over what we thought we may get to in two loops, but leave droppable CPs on both. We knew clearing the course for us would not happen, and managed to map out a first loop to take all of the top aside from one 80pt control, then come to the bottom for the second loop and pick up most of the high value points. We left off points on each side of the lake, but still thought there was plenty on our route to push us.

Our goal was to go aggressive on the bike, but not go too crazy and make sure we saved ourselves for the longer part of the race. We pushed to get out front at the start so that we wouldn't get held up by non-technical riders. Once we established a decent position, we got in a comfortable spin. As soon as we hit the road we got passed by some of those speedy folks like DDon11, FunRun, and Bent, but we kept a decent pace and rolled in from the ride in a good position. I believe we exited the TA at 12:15pm, which was ahead of schedule.

We hopped in the canoe, and paddled up to the north end where we ditched the boat at the portage and started west first, to pick up some controls around the swamp, heading north as we made our way to the trails. We picked up another two 80pt CPs, and a 60pt before making our way to the big money loop. We had decided that we would get everything on the big loop aside from the 80pt CP which seemed too far out of the way from the rest to make it worthwhile. Hindsight being 20/20, we maybe should have grabbed that CP. The bushwhack we did turned out to be much slower than we anticipated, and in the same time we probably would have been able to run down to the 80 pointer.

We finished the loop, and headed back to pick up our canoe to head back south. We were ahead of schedule, so we scooped up the inner-tube CP before heading back to CPB. Since I knew I was going to be doing the swimming CP, I made Simpy do the inner tube. He really seemed to enjoy it. :)

Back to the TA, we filled up our bladders and headed out with a goal to get every CP on the bottom in the remaining 2.5 hours. After a brief dip for 50pts, we aimed for the two big point CPs next, although it did make it tough to attack them from the angle we went in. We ended up meeting up with 7Systems in our bushwhack, and both of us ended up over shooting the lake. We split with them when we decided to get the CPs in different orders, but both of us managed to scoop them reasonably pain free after that. Here we also met up with DDon11 and FunRun, who we managed to see off and on all day (with some fun banter of course). We all headed down the "river" (pretty dry in places) to the road, to pick up a 40pt CP and then shift to the east side of the road. There were three CPs fairly tight, but with time getting low we chose to drop the 60pt CP as we were a bit concerned we may be cutting things too close. My speed had dropped off significantly during the walk out of the west side, and there were some CPs we could pick up near the hub if we had time.

We stopped for some target shooting at the slingshot, and were close but not close enough. Back to the hub area, we scooped up a quick 30pt CP by the swamp. Realizing we had time to pick up one more 20pt CP, we jumped in the canoe and pushed it hard to the beach. Only problem...there was no CP there. We had assumed it was there as it was there every year and we had seen one on the map earlier in route planning. Turned out it was at a camp a short ways north of the beach. But because of our beach stop, we had missed the opporutunity to get to the cabin. Blargh. We hustled back to the hub, and finished up our day.

Overall we were happy with our execution and result. We finished 9th in our category, which really was a strong category, and I think close to 10th/11th overall. Simpy had a great race navigating, nailing almost everything. Physically we seemed to keep a good pace, although I suffered a bit for a while near the end (but managed to break out of that funk in time to push for some of the last CPs). I did dehydrate myself, and didn't take in enough calories, which is a struggle I have with sprint races, and something I need to work on. We only ended up having to drop one CP from our intended plan, so our route planning was pretty solid.

Yet another awesome race put on by STORM and as always it was nice to chat with friends pre and post race.

Out with Simpy to Durham for another AR-ish ride, starting with trail and ending with gravel road and pavement. We managed to pass through Uxbridge and go by the Kawartha dairy without stopping. Now that is willpower.

Run (Trail) 40:59 intensity: (8 @2) + (50 @3) + (16:11 @4) + (23:50 @5) 5.73 km (7:09 / km) +50m 6:51 / km

Short trail run with Simpy after our bike to give the new shoes a go. Will look great on the weekend, as now we not only have matching packs, but identical shiny shoes. Maybe I should go get some capris.....

Stuck to mostly double track because the trails were so busy. Lot of trees down on the double track.
