Dirty German Endurance Festive 25k Trail Run
Started out thinking I'd go at this like a hard training run/race for Jukola. And floating around in my mind were things like Alan Young's 1/2 marathon time, from which I extrapolated a sub-90-minute trail 21.1km was possible, and the corresponding idea that 4-minutes/km, or just a touch over, might be possible. So I might as well try that, and see how long it lasts, maybe.
And then, 1 minute in, I'm in 4th, and 2 minutes in, I'm in 2nd, tucked in behind 1st. 8 minutes in, the guy in 3rd began gaining on me, so I decided I'd hold him off, and it wasn't that bad. Meanwhile, the guy in 1st was stumbling over same bad footing, so I decided, what the heck, let's just take the lead and see how long this lasts. Went through the 3km, and 4km in 1st place, let 2nd & 3rd pass on a hard uphill, got a side stitch after the water stop (at which I had Gu and a sip of Mt. Dew while waiting for them to actually get the water ready... grrr....).
Vadim passed me a bit later, and things just kept get worse.
A lot worse:
Muscles I've never felt before were angry with me as I mentally struggled to push, while watching the per/km times fall apart... Esp. after about 15km, where the first >5min/km split was up a modest hill, but then the 2nd >5min/km split was
down the same hill!
My heart rate clearly tells the tale of some irrational exuberance while I breifly enjoyed the lead:
I wonder, if I'd actually run at 165-170bpm, if I'd have been able to hold that almost the whole way - e.g. how damaging was my crazy surge?
