Course set-check-pick 1:00:00 [1] ***

Spent 2 1/2 hours setting out controls for the Sharon Woods Sprints. I'll have an early morning tomorrow so I can get the last few out. It's supposed to be a bit rainy transitioning to snow, but after this month I think weather forecasts are often completely wrong. I'm really happy with the courses. They look fun to me. I spent about 2 1/2 hours in the copy shop printing the maps earlier today, and about 6 hours last night using OCAD. Most of that wasn't actually entering my changes, but figuring out how to change the scale from 1:10000 to 1:5000. I probably didn't need to do it the way I did, but the 1:10000 features looked like they were drawn with crayon when printed at 1:5000. Another beautiful day to be outside.

Mapping 30:00 [1]

90 more minutes checking some last-minute map updates. It was a beautiful day---Just as perfect a January day as you can have. About the mapping, I have no comment.

BillyPig 2005 at Miami-Whitewater Forest.

Orienteering race 3:17:00 [5] *** 14.1 km (13:58 / km)
spiked:7/20c shoes: Adidas $42 Cleats

Orienteering Cincinnati's BillyPig (12.9km straightline (15min/km) --- 14.1km is my GPS track). This was my first BillyPig. Previously, I've run the Piglet. This is the longest course I've done in a long time. I was okay for about 2 hours, and then 2 back-to-back hill climbs just took it all out of me. The last hour was just a fast walk with occasional downhill runs. Any uphill at all was slow. My heartrate was about 155-175 most of the last hour, I think. (I didn't have my HRM.) Now, hours later, when I walk up a flight of stairs, my heart races and my legs burn.
It was one of the best days of orienteering I've had in a long time. The last half of the course was straightforward, but the first half was just amazing. The forest was open, the course was interesting, with no obvious best skip and three forks. I don't know if it showed on my face, but I had a big grin most of the first two hours.
My one big mistake was at 13, where the leg went through a very intricate area. I wasn't going especially fast, but I was seeing what I was reading on the map, and I missed by 70 or 100m to the right. Probably lost 2 minutes.
Eric Buckley won, and my time is about twice his time.
Anyway, it was a great day in the woods. At the start, I was deciding T-shirt only or light fleece. I went with the light fleece, and had to unzip it and roll the sleeves up. T-shirt would've been the right choice. I'll post a map and GPS track in the next day.
