Lazy morning packing up in Estes Park, drove a few miles to RMNP and a nice campsite at Moraine Park. Went for a soggy hike on the Cub Lake Trail, saw some deer and a marmot. Hayden getting cold, so we turned around before getting to Cub Lake.

Left Limon early and headed toward the Rockies. Slipped in S of Denver and up I-70 into the mountains. Pulled off at Berthoud Pass and hiked to the summit of Colorado Mines Peak (12,500').






Then into RMNP from the west side doing Trail Ridge Road up and over on a gorgeous afternoon, stopping for a few short walks at the turnouts. Moose, Elk, Deer sightings enroute to KOA in Estes Park. Jackson and Ellen out early with altitude symptoms.

rumble of thunder just before dawn, so we did a flash packup and jumped in the van. Had breakfast about 45 minutes west at a rest area picnic spot - quite nice actually.



Then continued west through Kansas. Had originally planned on stopping mid-day for a swim break, but most of the parks apparently had beaches closed due to low water, so we didn't even attempt it. Stopped at KOA campground in Limon CO with a pool, spent a bit of time walking around the campground while Hayden rode a lean-steer trike. He was having a great time...

AM visit to the Jefferson Expansion National Memorial (aka St Louis Arch) did the museum and arch, then spent perhaps an hour strolling the grounds and along the river.




Then jumped in the car and headed west around noon. Stopped for the day at Clinton SP in Kansas. Sudden rainstorm during dinner, but cleared out and walked about a half hour around the campground before dark.

Conference until noon, then hit the road. Stopped by an outdoor store to look for a new camera pack for Ellen and lo & behold they actually had Vibram Five Fingers in stock. Treated myself to a pair of black KSO's. Then on to St Louis. Had planned on an evening stroll in the sculpture gardens but too damn hot so wound up in the hotel pool instead. Kids were fine with that... Last of the hotel stops for the rest of the trip. Next 3 weeks in the tent. Logged time is to/from conference center since our hotel was located off campus.

Walking to/from UIUC conference center. Kids spent the day in the hotel pool.

AM Hike at Cowles Bog down to the beach, some beach time, then back via the same route. Then on to UIUC and my AERGC conference at Urbana/Champaign.
