Cool and misty at the start. Based upon conditions and forecast, I was dressed pretty well. Went out conservatively (didn't intend to 'race') and the first few miles passed quickly. Around mile 3 I had slowed to walk a few hills and my glasses steamed up pretty badly - for the next mile or so I played with them - snugged up they were too close and steamed up, moving them away from my face they bounced around too much. So shortly after fetching a dew and refilling my water bottle from Bruce and Scott at the first aid station I took them off and stowed them. That slowed things down considerably as I could see the trail, but couldn't see the rocks and roots on the trail - walked a lot of downills as my vision did not allow me to see the footing too well and things were damp and slick. I actually ran more uphills than anything else since the ground is closer and a bit more in focus - plus the penalty of getting tripped up is not as great. Yo-yo'd with Deb a bit as I'd pass her going up hills and she'd fly by me on the downsides. So a slow pace, but comfortable otherwise until I got back to Scott and Bruce at 12 miles.





From there the rain picked up in intensity and I think the temp dropped 10 degrees which I wasn't prepared for - the final 4 miles were slow, wet and cold. I kept expecting the taxman to cruise by me at any moment, but I guess I managed to hold him off today, or maybe he passed me without saying hi and I didn't recognize him in my cold, blind fog... I think my time was 2:58 but I couldn't read the timing clock when I finished so I could be wrong on that.. Jogged back to the car, changed into warm clothing, then gorged myself on pizza and warm soup while chatting with a number of folks. Most were complaining about how spent their legs were but mine were feeling fine - I was just cold today. The day was planned as a training run and not a race and by most metrics it was a success. Looking forward to 50km at Blue Hills next weekend...

Its time for a new eyeglass prescription and I'm pretty sure I need to go into bifocals this time around. After today's run, I may seriously look at getting some disposable contact lenses for running and just get a set of non-prescription lenses for my glasses for eye protection.

No time to sneak off and go trail running, so I ran laps around the house and goat barn. Measured out a 200m loop (first couple slight short) - best lap was 48s, longest 66s - so I kept track of time and averaging 1min per loop. Changed directions a couple times for excitement, got snagged my the multiflora roses a few times too. Not too exciting, but beats treadmills, road running or missing another day.

Wow, three days into the week and I haven't done squat. Too many demands on my time this week. Blood pressure way up too.

Hopefully run long on Saturday at least, then probably headed out of town on Sunday for school vacation with the kids.
