Hiking (Geocache) 1:00:00 [1] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Ellen and Anna camping this weekend so I've got the boys - no time to sneak out for a ride or run. So we went geocaching over in Nye Holman and Heron Cove parks. Got them to jog occasionally on trail, but mostly just hiking about.

Note

Showers threatening this evening, so stayed in and watched the Jukola on the internet. Very nicely done video feeds, and really neat to see the results updating almost instantly as people were punching on the video. But probably won't stay up too late - I'll see how Greg does, then head off to bed - it would be very easy to get sucked into watching all night - and I need to get my rest as I had a couple late nights last week.

Bike - Slipstream (commute) 1:10:00 [3] 23.8 km (2:56 / km) +300m 2:46 / km
shoes: Slipstream

Overcast and spitting rain on the way in - though roads remained dry.

Didn't bother swapping the pedals - took the longer route away from 195 instead. Still not sure on the clipless, but at a couple points decided I didn't want to be clipped in (crossing 44 from an uphill stop etc) so unclipped both feet with the intent of riding unclipped until I got to less traffic'ed spot to then clip in and found both times I did this that the clips wound up engaging without thinking about it - so maybe I'm just trying too hard. Would much rather have had the platforms while weaving my way at slow speed back between the buildings once on campus though - a much more urban environment.

Bike - Slipstream (commute) 57:10 [3] 18.8 km (3:02 / km) +300m 2:49 / km
shoes: Slipstream

ride home - took the 195 route, no problems with traffic. Clipped in quickly about 50% of the time, 40% with some delays, and about 10% with prolonged fiddling. Cooler going home than when I went in - tshirt on the ride this AM, had to wear the windbreaker on the way home. Freaky weather. Headwind on the way home.

Run - Road (Dougs) 17:43 [3] 3.62 km (4:54 / km) +70m 4:28 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

immediately changed shoes and ran roads up to Dougs to retrieve the car before they closed for the day...

Note

Chaperoned an all day field trip to the Bronx Zoo - a good six hours of walking around being AOWN (more or less). No time for any other exercise today. Car's in the shop (actually its done, but too late today to pick it up) so I'll probably swap the platforms back on the bent and ride that to work tomorrow. Not quite comfortable enough with the pedals to tackle 195 and the inattentive early morning drivers...

Bike - Slipstream (SLR) 20:00 [3] 5.85 km (3:25 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

Tooling up and down SLR trying to get used to the clipless pedals. Getting out seems ok, but getting clipped in is still taking a minute or so until both get clipped. I've shimmed the cleats out, make sure the sole is clearing the pedal, still not terribly intuitive about where to place the foot to clip - I've tried direct, scraping foot forward and scraping foot backward. I can get the cleat to catch, but just won't engage. On hills this sucks because the time it takes fiddling with the pedal is time that I'm not actually putting much effort into the pedalling itself - so I damn sure better be in my bottom gear.

Rode for a while, then dumped it pretty hard when turning sharply and not unclipping before hand. Landed pretty hard on my left side drawing blood on my calf and forearm. Had I not been clipped in, I would have been able to put a foot down but no time to react while clipped. At least I was on the dirt road when I fell so its just picking sand out of my wounds rather than asphalt. All for today - I'll give the clipless another week or so but I had better see some improvement... :-(
