Note

Busy day with Anna's confirmation and getting everyone shuttled around to various halloween activities, so nothing on the books today. But I got the bike and the trainer down into the basement, so at least I have a backup plan in place to do something in the evening.

Run - Trail long (Goodwin) 1:34:28 [3] 12.2 km (7:45 / km) +180m 7:13 / km
weight:75.3kg shoes: old 285 Roclite A

Wandered down to Chaplin for an early morning trail run with some of the WAC crew - about 9 or 10 folks including Diana H, Nipmuck Dave and a number of faces I recognized but can't put a name on . Still pretty dim at 6:45, but lightened up quickly thereafter. nice combination of technical rocky stuff, nice woods roads and a brief foray on the rail trail. Group mostly together with occasional pauses to regroup.

Hopefully get to run with these folks more in the future.

Run - Trail (Valley Falls) 54:19 [3] 9.65 km (5:38 / km) +150m 5:13 / km
weight:74.8kg shoes: old 285 Roclite A

snuck out of work early and ran with John and Tony at Valley Falls. Good to get out, tough work on the hills.

May venture down to Goodwin to run with some of the Willi AC folks in the morning.

same old route - barely able to squeeze this in before the bus comes down the street. If I get any slower, I'm going to have to shorten the route. :-(

10:31, 11:21, sunny, mid-70's, not many days like this left in 2010

geocache hike with the kids. Series of caches east of main farm. Found 6of7 including 2 micros.

Then over to visit the folks

Note

so far for October I've got a 5km road race, the Highlander and a couple trail runs. This really sucks.... Need to find a way to squeeze something in before I implode...
3 PM

Bike - Recumbent (Hare & backish) 14:30 [2] 5.0 km (2:54 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

pulled the cobwebs off the 'bent and tooled down the road a bit between buses. Front brake sticking, legs not in bike shape at all. But since I'm not getting any running time in lately, probably time to think about throwing the bike on the trainer in the basement to get at least some sort of exercise in, albeit in the evenings...

Run - Trail long (Case / Gay City) 2:59:18 [3] 26.3 km (6:49 / km) +680m 6:02 / km
shoes: old 285 Roclite A

Early AM long run with John. Clearing, but chilly at start - low 40's. Sun not quite up when we started. John's goal was 15-20 miles at a decent pace as a last long run before Bimbler's 50k next weekend. My goal was to try and stay with John as long as I could, but if I tanked, I'd be happy with a long walk back.

Around Case from Line Street, over to Gay City doing a CW circuit including a bit of off-trail O-style running in the northern section, stopping by the pit toilets on our way past the ball fields. Then down to Blackledge Falls, up to the powerline (newly graded and redone with new material). John missed the cutoff to the gas line, and we ended up running the powerline all the way back to Birch Mtn Rd. From there we retraced some trails and ran some others up the southern side of Case before heading back to Line Street. The last 45 minutes or so my legs were dead - also quite a bit of Lyme arthritis in the hips (expected that as I didn't take any vitamin I) but also both knees pretty achy today, which I don't usually get.

I suspect it will be a fairly stiff afternoon...

Run - Trail tempo (Case Mtn) 58:15 [3] 9.5 km (6:08 / km) +200m 5:33 / km

Afternoon trail run w/ Kristina - a nice brisk pace, felt good all the way around and nice company for the run.

3km initial uphill - 17:30 - about the same distance/climb as Manchester - only with rocks and loose leaves underfoot

Hiking (Precipice) 4:00:00 [0]
shoes: old 285 Roclite A

Climbed the Precipice, a non-technical climbing route to the summit of Champlain Mountain. Down via the north ridge, catching the shuttle bus back to Precipice parking area. Lots of exposure on the Precipice, very cold and windy up top.

Orienteering race (Hudson Highlander) 5:11:37 [3] **** 26.2 km (11:54 / km)
spiked:29/30c shoes: 340 ORoc 2010

Two goals for this race (my second Highlander). A) Finish B) Navigate cleanly - ie no major errors.

First leg doesn't really count as I just joined the long train heading across Polebrook - my particular train went through a bit more laurel enroute than I would have liked, but arrived at #1 in good shape, wherein I started to navigate.

Hooked up w/ Bernie enroute to #2 and although doing my own thing, we appeared to be running about the same pace and chatted a bit through #3. Decided running with someone would make the day a lot more pleasant, and our abilities pretty well matched we decided to run together for as long as it was prudent, though I was still in full contact and navigating the entire way, we discussed our options as we went. We agreed on most route choices, a few I ceded that his were superior, and on a few mine were better, and some we didn't choose the best option, but navigated it well enough anyhow. And where we could keep her in sight, we agreed following Pavlina was the best route choice there was :-)

We stayed together through the first two maps and the trail run, hitting everything pretty cleanly, although better route choices might have avoided some of the blueberry, we executed our chosen routes just fine. Dismayed at the lack of salty foods at the aid station (and the gatorade was really, really weak) I went down to the bbq table to see about some chips and realized burgers were already coming off the grill. Grabbed a burger and a handful of cookies before leaving and told Bernie to go on, that I was planning on a purposeful walk for the next couple controls.

Burger did the trick and the energy picked up shortly thereafter and I caught back up with Bernie around control #23 even though I was still walking, my route choices were very fine and executed perfectly. Ran in sight of Bernie through 25 where he got away from me. Running solo and well up until #29, wherein I proceeded to spike the feature, check description (western foot) but failed to note that the cliff had a tiny hook to it and not seeing the flag, kept on going, losing a good 6-7 minutes before coming back and finding flag tucked around the end of the cliff. Chugged back in just fine after that.

So navigationally a very clean race for me, on almost all controls the flags turned up just when I expected them to. Admittedly I walked many legs, ran some and a mix on others, so my per/km times vary leg to leg. Also, in retrospect, I could have chosen better optimal routes on a couple controls, but I executed the intended plan on each very well.

Quite pleased with the effort overall.

Nice day, didn't 'race' it, but ran pretty hard nonetheless. 6:15, 6:19 splits.

23rd overall.
