Bike - Stationary 50:00 [2] 20.0 km (2:30 / km)

Didn't feel like reading tonight, so watched the Appendices of the Two Towers on portable DVD player - at least until the battery died... then a few more minutes to make it an even 50 minutes.

Bike - Stationary 1:00:00 [2] 24.0 km (2:30 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

Another hour in the basement, pretty comfy.. Front edge of seat strap digging into thigh a little bit, have to try some adjustments to get it to go away. Tried it looser, but wound up rubbing on lower strap.

Even though I'm not going anywhere, I decided that I'd like to track rough mileage while riding the trainer. So I worked out the gear inches at roughly 80 cadence I'm doing right now and it works out to about 24kph - interestingly enough about the pace I was commuting on last fall on the DF. Of course I've got no hills in my basement. But its a good number for now... Some folks say you need to get 1000 miles or so in before you really begin to develop your 'bent' muscles.

more of the same....

lower back sore, perhaps from chiselling ice this AM - had to do a lot of bending to pry up blocks of ice.

Bike - Stationary 40:00 [2] 16.0 km (2:30 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

Broke down and bought a magnetic trainer for the bike so that I could at least get some exercise in later in the evening after the kids are in bed. Otherwise I'm just not getting anything in. Everyone says that riding the trainer is too boring for words, but I didn't find it too bad. Just kicked back and read The Adventures of the Barefoot Sisters - a book about a couple of sisters who hiked the AT from Maine to Georgia, then back again - barefoot. Still in Maine on the sobo side of the trip, but enjoyable reading so far. Probably helps that one of the authors works for me as a tour guide....

Could have easily kept reading (and riding) but cut it short at 40 minutes. Haven't done squat for 2 months (more actually) and don't want to overdo things too quickly. But I think this will allow me to at least get some physical exercise most days.

Run - Trail (21st Annual Moonlight Run) 45:00 [3] 6.0 km (7:30 / km) +200m 6:26 / km
shoes: Kumasi GTX

Perfect night for the moonlight - mid teens, perfectly clear skies under a nearly full moon and a bunch of this white stuff on the ground to make it a rather magical experience.

Since half the running time was after midnight, I'm calling this a Sunday run. 9 folks showed - 3 walkers and 6 runners - 5 of us started the regular loop (Dave S. arrived a minute or so too late and tried to catch us be didn't find us until after Ken & I were coming down) Took off at a mellow pace, partway up Woodchuck Ken F. picked up the pace a little - knowing that he didn't really know the course that well, I pushed and stayed with him. Last we saw of the others until the end. Ken and I traded the lead and actually were running a pretty respectable pace given the uneven & frequently slippery terrain. I think we problaby gained the firetower at about 30 minutes or so - but neither of us was wearing a watch. Hung out for a bit, then began a leisurely jog back to the parking lot for cocoa and brownies.

Run - Trail (Soapstone) 15:00 [3] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

Up to the forest with 4 inches of fresh snow. Got cold standing around and in the end, no other runners showed - a few walkers. So took off to do the sampler solo, but after about 7-8 minutes my breathing was hard (mild asthma) and my whole body just felt achy (its been feeling achy for a few days, but I attributed it to not exercising). No willpower to continue so I turned around and headed back down the hill. Perhaps if there had been some company I would have pushed on and things might have improved but not today.

Will probably still head back up this evening for the 21st annual Moonlight run - 11:30pm, haven't missed it for a number of years now (6?).

Note

Over the past couple of years a number of people I've known (family, friends, colleagues) have been diagnosed with Cancer. Some have won the battle, some have lost and others continue to fight it.

This year I'm going to ride the Pan Mass Challenge - a fund raising bike ride. What sets this ride apart from other fund raisers is the fact that it is the largest athletic charity event in existence - more than 26 million raised last year - and also one of the most efficient with 99% of funds going to the charity - in this case the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

I've committed to the ride and fund raising for this years 192 mile ride to Provincetown. If your life and the lives of those around you has been affected by cancer, won't you please consider a supporting my ride with an e-Gift to the Dana Farber Institute? Online gift giving is quick and easy and allows the greatest amount of money to flow through to the charity. My rider ID# is CM0205.

On behalf of all those affected by Cancer, I thank you for your support...

Bike - Recumbent (Cervens - RT30) 30:00 [3] 10.75 km (2:47 / km) +160m 2:36 / km
weight:76.7kg shoes: Slipstream

Another after work ride - different route. Dirt road was fine, except the put down a lot of new, loose gravel which was annoying so I opted for a different road route home. Definitely using some different muscles but the overall effort going up some familiar hills didn't seem much different than the C-dale, though I'm sure I was moving slower.

Note

January - pretty pathetic month with about 12 hours. But that's to be expected. My biggest activity was easy running w/ Jackson at around 10 miles - but that's certainly not a bad thing.

February will likely be more of the same hit or miss but I'd like to try to get out more often. Plan to resume commuting by bike on March 1st which will also kick off official training for PMC. Probably won't get much regular orienteering in this spring, but will try to get as many sprints in as schedule allows. Also get the Crandalls map done for a meet in early June.
