Woke up at 4:45, opted to just get up and make breakfast rather than risk falling back asleep and then rushing out the door in an hour or so to make Ken's 2-pipes run.

With Ken & Scott. Light coat of fresh snow made for slow & slick going, also dodging icy branches hanging over trail. Stopped at one point to clear a widow maker off the trail.
Nipmuck north from two pipes. Up to old fire tower foundation on Walker Mtn, then some old logging roads before rejoining Nipmuck for return. Scott & Ken venturing further, but 75 minutes seemed good for me so i stopped when we got back to two pipes..

Home about midnight, but didn't fall asleep until after 3. Perhaps too warm - not used to full blankets and real bed but also mind racing with anxiety about NBC piece. Got great footage. But it all comes down to the producers edit.

Body battery nearly topped out even on poor sleep and low rHR to boot. But haven't haven't done vigorous exercise since Monday.

Note
(rest day)

Original plan was to get out for a short local run, but got a few loose ends tied up and then spent the afternoon fooling around on the organ while watching the snow. Nothing wrong with that either. There's always tomorrow and I got my obligatory weekly O done on Monday.

Green light on remapping Brooksvale, so need to get working on the basemap.

Killing some time. Wandered over to park to use restrooms, pack up gear and clean rental car. Went for a walk to stretch the legs before flying. Can't stick around for today's motala. Nice park, dead flat. Lots of prickly pear & cholla. My guess it will be quite sprinty in character, just longer - 6.3km. And likely added distance for cactus avoidance.

Another long nights sleep, quite restful after winds died down. Peaked at 80mph earlier in the day, likely higher across tops of the hills. Meeting the film crew from NBC Nightly News at 9am. Quite anxious - I hope they produce a quality segment.

Out with crew from NBC News. Just counting part of the time up in the hills. I think it went well, good footage acquired. We will have to wait to see what the final edit looks like. No eta at this point.

Actually slept surprisingly well even though the Sorrento was experiencing a lot of turbulence after about midnight. Woke fairly often, rolled over and right out again. Maybe the rocking motion was an advantage? Really not sure what I'm doing with myself today since event postponed due to the weather.
4 PM

Note

Had grand notions of going for a walk or something but weather pretty well sucks - 35, wet snow/rain mix and until a little while ago really windy. Better weather on tap for tomorrow they say. Planning to stay near venue tonight - but no internet so just sitting car near interstate & internet for a while. Not much out here... 'cept cows..

Not running today, just pictures. Very subtle terrain which I navigated well, but I was mostly just walking with camera in hand.

Actually racing (sic) this one. All manner of sharp pointy stuff today - cat-claw acacia, shindagger agave, saguaro, prickly pear, barrel & cholla for cactus, Ocotillo and a few others I didn't stop to ID - and mostly pretty densely packed - ie hard toa void it. Mass start handicap race. Everyone headed to the "box" first, get 1-7 controls in any order depending upon handicap (m60-69=4), then back to start and a 6 control loop common for everyone.

New map, still in a state of development, some "white woods" were nearly impenetrable with major blood loss. Got well off south of line enroute to my second box control. Likely lost 3-4 minutes on the kerfuffle. Went to rocks just above #3 (post box) before realizing my overshot, pethaps 30s. No real errors on rest, but the going was often not fast at all. The seemingly white woods from 4-5 was very thick, lot of thrashing time on that leg, but ultimately spiked it.

Training load super high this week. I'm not actually registered for any other events this week, and that be just as well. Take photos, but not kill myself doing it.

Control checking & wakeup. So a bit more careful & tentative navigation to make sure I was in the right spot. Carried an extra SI unit with stand in for #1. Missed #5, slightly above correct reentrant which was obscured by vegetation, had to backtrack slightly. No skips since I needed to verify all controls. #13 was in wrong reentrant so fixed that. And back from first loop in time for some photo duties. Nice course..

After filming pre-start & start, grabbed a spare e-stick from Melissa and ventured out to check 2nd half of long Hustle. Figure I probably had a 25-30 minute head start on the fast guys. A little pokey when I first started as I hadn't decided whether to do them in order, or score-o fashion to cut the distance. After a couple minutes of indecision and slow jogging away from start, elected to just go for the long leg to 14 and do them in order. No issues other than wakeup delay an rehanging #17 which had fallen to the ground. Made it around and back about 5 minutes before Jan L cruised in, so met my goal of beating them back. No splits since there was no download up when I finished the first loop - aka short Hustle- so opted not to use my stick. And the one I borrowed wasn't cleared, check nor officially start. But woke up boxes just dandy.

Well, that was unexpected. First time orienteering in Sonoran desert terrain. Lots of pointy things, blood was drawn. My UV sun sleeves are now white with many reddish brown spots. Took me a few controls to determine what was runnable and what was not. Light green vegetation called for avoidance whenever possible. Sandy washes were free of pointy stuff but deep loose sand was very taxing to run in.

Clean run, some route choices modified by veg conditions, but always knew where I was. Slowed down a few times for cautious assessment.

Got around the course in a bit over 53 minutes. As usual (due to my photo duties) I started first, and finished first - nothing like having a target on your back. But no one else was able to come in under 61 minutes - so a win with a sizable 7+ minute margin over 2nd place.

Up early to catch plane to TUC via ATL. Almost missed connection as plane was boarding before I deplaned from BDL, and both gates were at the furthest end of two different terminals. Didn't quite run, but twas a very hasty walk. One person right behind me before they closed the door. At least I avoided the line.

Easy walk on Bridle Path > Nature Trail. Considered a trail run, but orienteering here in the AM, so gonna save it..
