City running 48:00 [2] 4.0 mi (12:00 / mi)
shoes: NewBalance 715

Loosening up after yesterday's ultra-long. First road race of the Chicago Area circuit next Sunday. Should be ok, but not remarkable.

Orienteering race 2:28:25 [4] **** 7.8 km (19:02 / km) +320m 15:47 / km
spiked:10/11c shoes: Black & Red Jalas Integrators

US Champs - Ultra-long Championships. Ran the Green course all weekend for the training benefit, and to get ranked on Green for 2008. This was a super physical effort I was not ready for. But having stuck it out, I feel pretty good tonight at home. Some aches and pains from last week are nowhere in evidence.

Ran off the map at the southern-most control when I became confused by a reentrant system. No excuse. But even that didn't cost me 27 minutes...my deficit below the next guy. So I've got to assume that it was just a measure of my slow speed. Soupbone beat PG by only a few seconds, and PG topped my M60 age group...so I would have had to have been moving as fast as 'Soupie when I saw him - and that wasn't too likely. Altho he and I ran Green all weekend, Soupie was running most of the courses and legs in half of my time....and ended up bringing TWO US Championships in M55+ back to Chicago with us.

Nevertheless I had a great time all weekend, and am glad I ran the extra distance on Green instead of Brown.

Orienteering race 47:32 [5] ***** 4.4 km (10:48 / km) +110m 9:36 / km
spiked:32/32c shoes: Black & Red Jalas Integrators

Two sprints for US Sprint Championships. First on Miami U campus, second on trashy open area where trail running was the fastest option.

Afterward we all went over to Ky for HofbrauhÀus beers and Pomilios veal scallopine...very good. Jeff Shaw, Natalia, Lisa McNerney, Charlie and Maricel around the table.

Orienteering race 57:52 [5] 3.7 km (15:38 / km) +130m 13:18 / km
spiked:17/19c slept:6.0

Green Course at the Pig outside Cincinnati. Drove down with Soupbone on Thursday night, stopping in Indy for a bit of enjoyable "recreation" until 3am. An hour after going to bed, I heard a banging on the door...it was Soupie! Runnning around the hallways in his underpants at 4am! What the....?

So the weekend started off on a strange note. But it was good to be back on the Green Course again after the past 3 years on Brown. I blew #12 when I came diagonally across a large field and reentered the woods way wrong...too far left. I only realized my error when I heard rushing water below me, and I realized that I was over a river instead of the dry ditch I wanted.

Lisa McNerney beat me by 4 minutes, and Valerie Meyer beat me by 13 minutes. Pretty humbling. But that's the nice thing about Green: lots of reality checks. On Brown, I've only had a couple of other old guys to compare myself with. Now I can clearly see how much my orienteering has deteriorated.

City biking 55:00 [3] 11.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: NewBalance 715

Back up to meet with "Public Enemies" crew that wants to alter the alley frontage of my Newport garage....an 80-year old brick construction. They're going to have one of the actresses running through a gangway, out into the alley, and back into the hobo village they've constructed tonight. Chris doing outside work for the first time: pruning trees, unclogging yard drains at Fletcher.

City biking 25:00 [3] 5.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: NewBalance 715

Over to Newport to see the Johnny Depp set and collect rents. Maybe 25 vintage Model A's and old Chevvys lined up and down the block in front of my building. Pretty cool. Film crew shot all night, until dawn I understand.

slept:7.0 shoes: NewBalance 715

Up to the doc's for another shot...perhaps my last? Johnny Depp film crew at Newport: Depression-era hobo shack village built under the el, street paved with phony bricks, street lights replaced with 1920's styles. All the filming to be tonight and tomorrow. Pretty cool.
