Orienteering race 1:59:15 [4] 10.0 mi (11:56 / mi)
shoes: MudClaw I
ICO's 2-hour score-O at Eagle Creek. I felt like I ran well, and I liked the park and the map quite a bit. The map has held-up surprisingly well for being over 10 years old, and much of the 1st and 2nd green is actually quite runnable. My new shoes (Mudclaw) were excellent -- perhaps the best treads I have ever had.
I determined beforehand that it wouldn't be possible for me to clear the course in 2 hours, so I purposefully neglected controls 29, 30, 5, and 4. I made a couple of minor mistakes on #2 and #6 at the end that cost me a couple of points, but mostly my navigation was pretty good.
My route: 11, 12, 13, 20, 19, 21, 26, 28 (a bone-headed control placement), 27, 25, 23, 24 (an even bigger bone-headed control placement that was fun for no one, and could have seriously injured a competitor), 22, 18, 17, 16, 15, 10, 9, 1, (overshot #2 and gave up on it), 3, went half-way to 6 and bailed for time.
Too bad the course-setter didn't attend OCIN's clinic a few weeks ago --there were quite a few sloppy placements and control descriptions. But all in all, it was a very fun event, and I'm eager to give it another shot next year.
